I bought a 2009 impreza with 180,000 miles from a dealership about 2 months ago and after putting <2,000 more miles on it the check engine light came on.

Mechanic says the cats (not covered under limited warranty) are fucked and quoted me $1500 to get it fixed. Dealership wants $1800.

Emissions is due in January. What do?

Go to a junkyard and get new cats. Have an exhaust shop weld them in for you.

About how much would that cost?

This.

Also you're a dumbass for buying a warranty and living in an emissions state.

it looks great. i fucking hate most modern vehicles. leave the futuristic fighter jet shit for the exotics where you can actually afford to do it right... what would ppl rather have? the new civic type r or this normal but good looking car?

a design like this will still look good in 5,10,15 years if the vehicle is maintained properly. compare that to everything else on the fucking road these days.

Now that I'm done mowing down countless pedestrians and ripping hektik skidz into curbs, it's time to part ways with my 2011 Mustang GT 6MT. What is a good car to move onto from this?

Only real requirements are
>Manual
>$22,000 maximum
>Fair mileage eg. Sub 85,000 miles
>Decently quick eg. Quarter mile sub 14
>Four usable seats
>Fair years eg. 2000+
>Would love to avoid German, but not out of question.

So no BRZ/Miata/Z cars here. Had a Miata and loved it but had to move on.

This one's pretty open ended so it should be fun.

Beaters are for beating. You get pulled over a lot at first; just explain how pathetic you are and they let you go. If you buy Fords like I do then they break a lot and you get to learn about how cars work.

just practice driving really early on a weekend where there's no traffic

driving is simple

I second everything he said.

Learning to drive is like learning to ride a bike or learning how to swim. It only seems difficult at the start, but you will quickly develop a sense for what you need to do and it will feel as automatic as breathing.

And early morning weekend driving is the comfiest thing in the world.

It may not be a popular opinion, but I think this era was “peak car”, especially for me the early 90s. Cars had enough tech to be reliable and fast, like electronic fuel injection, turbos in many cases, disk brakes with ABS, independent suspension, DOHC on almost every engine, and 5 or 6 speed manuals. At the same time, cars had not been weighed down with 14 airbags and crash structures that could survive a fall from space, nor diluted by non-defeatable traction control, numb electric steering, and autos everywhere. Cars were marketed on being fun to drive, not how smart the infotainment system was.

All that meant cars of this era have enough tech to control more than enough power reliably to make them fast by any standards and had the chassis to handle it, yet not so much tech that modifying one requires a masters in electrical engineering. Cars of this era worked and worked well, and could be fast stock or modified, but still had actual feel and feedback and were very mechanical things.

Perhaps best of all, this was an era where performance cars still mattered. A time when it wasn’t in question whether any given company would even have a performance model, but rather a question of how many performance cars they could jam into their dealer lineup at the same time, and these companies were judged by the variety and quality of sports cars they could put out. Companies like Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mazda, to name a few, really pushed to see just how many performance cars the market could take at one time.

This was a time when McLaren was pushing out 240mph supercars that relied on pure driver talent for control, while Honda was making Civics that were actually small and light and fun to drive at any speed. This is the same era that gave us the Ferrari F40 and E30 M3, MKIV Supra and the godzilla GTRs, 964 and 993 911s, twin turbo rotary-powered RX7s and Cosmos, DOHC Corvette ZR1s, and lest we forget, bestowed the Miata upon the world.

What a time.

>"ya..."
>"I'm more of a cruising kinda guy, I don't know much about cars"
>"kay"
>"ya if it was mine i'd drop an LS into it"
>"uhh, okay cool man"

Why is it that people who know nothing about cars always insist on dropping an LS into their car?

It's a shit engine with a shit power curve.

let me explain:
>Muh compact hp
overheats because of muh compactness, shit power curve because of the pushrods which is why it's compact

>muh cheap hp
sure the 400hp number sounds nice, but have you looked at HOW you get that 400? It's a fucking truck engine. Literally every single engineer to work on a performance car has prioritized hp and rpm over torque/low revs except for GM's retards of engineers. and the boomers and inbred children of these autistic boomers eat it up like diabetes because they're too fucking stupid to understand even basic mechanical knowledge.

>muh weight
by the time you're done beefing up everything to take care of the torque that isn't needed, you will likely end up with a much heavier car. Not to mention if any structural members need to be cut to fit the engine in, you fuck the chassis rigidity.

It's a fucking truck engine. When will you amerilards and retarded ausfags get that through your fat fucking heads that it's not good for anything but towing and hauling fatass cars around. It has absolutely NO business being anywhere remotely near a sports car, which can be proven by the fact that every engineering team on the face of the planet has taken quite literally the opposite approach of what GM has done and made engines that are at least somewhat efficient for their displacement.

Does take alot to bring to 400, and truck engine is just intake and cam, which you must likely changing if your want more power anyway. I fell like you are trying to hate ls swaps just to be different and act more cultured than others to make yourself feel better.
>>
>>17384659
no I'm just sick of people glorifying this pile of shit and even more sick of people suggesting it in swaps. It should have nothing to do with sportscars and should have been completely reengineered 30 years ago

New cars are weak and will crumble easily unlike old cars that were build like tanks. This is a collective problem and there are no alternatives which implies whole thing is a racket created by the government for companies.

Few examples.
>Old cars had steel bodies which keps them intact after impact
>New cars are plastic and other cheap/weak metals
Case point
>One guy hit a tree in a old summer car. They only had to take it to the shop and fix it.
>My friend experienced similar crash in 2010 Prius. Whole thing got fucking totalled, the engine got completely fucked by folding under the car.

Few reasons I can think for the elaborate racket are these. Firstly, insurance companies get a reason to jack up their prices as cars get more easily busted. Secondly, cars are cheaper and can be sold with higher margins. Thirdly, cars wont last long anymore which benefits manufacturers and shops.

What can we do about this though? Maybe it would be wise to stick with old cars but enstablishment is cracking on that too by creating laws.

Its so hopeless to be a car lover these days

Crumple zones absorb impact so you become less dead. Downside is it's easier to write the car off. Want to preserve a car? Drive fucking defensively.
