Is it true that a car's handling can change based on how high the engine is revved and how does that work?

yes you go faster when the engine is revved high, and so your suspension needs to do more work
>>
>>17389606
I mean different how well it works, not how much it has to work. Different in that the handling can be improved while at high revs, where the car would have been more difficult to control if you didn't rev as high.
>>
Kinda, it's more about the amount of torque you can get to the wheels, which changes as you rev higher and change gears.

Being in a low gear at high RPM and coasting into the corner off-throttle causes the drive wheels to resist the forward movement of the car, which causes weight transfer which greatly affects handling. In a RWD car, the back end will stabilize and pull the car into line as it proceeds through the corner, and in a FWD car, the engine braking that occurs can shift the weight to the front, creating more positive turn-in.

if you are in a high gear at cruising RPM, the engine cannot transmit much torque to the ground, nor does engine braking have much of an effect, creating a loose, unstable feel in RWD cars and causing understeer in FWD cars while cornering.

It is always smart to revmatch and go down a gear before cornering, as you gain stability and precision, especially in rain or snow.

Why doesn't anyone here want to talk about Volkswagen, Citroën, Renault, Fiat, or Peugeot? I know everyone here is too poor to afford a Bentley or Ferrari but what gives?

Going on a road trip across the southeast in a couple weeks. Are the major interstates heavily patrolled? Any of those states' HP's particularly strict on speed limits? I've heard the Carolinas are strict whereas Alabama and Mississippi speed limits are more like suggestions. I've also heard driving in Texas is pretty crazy in general. What's your experience driving within the region?

Went through that region for power tour 2015. Cops were mostly chill but I would recommend a radar detector anyway.
>>
>>17388675
Would rather not spend but if it comes down to it, is there a specific you'd recommend?

Florida always seems to be chill as fuck, I regularly pull 100 in the left lane on I-75 and the cops never seem to be around.

What are you supposed to look for when you buy a cheap used car? My sister's boyfriend bought a used car for just under 4k, but it's already broken down twice in the past three weeks, apparently. How does one prevent this when buying cheap?

He bought a 1999 Honda Civic, for reference, which isn't a terrible choice according to the sticky.

>>
>>17388644
At this point it's a 17 year old car, even if it's a Honda or Toyota shit is going to start breaking. My friends gf had one of those and it was a pile of shit a decade ago.
>>
>>17388659
Yeah, but that's the same kind of car that's recommended in the sticky. Is it really just "if you want a reliable car, you need to spend more than 5k?"
>>
4k is a lot for a 1999 Civic.

4k here gets you like a 2006 Civic

should be alright, a 2000 or 2001 3.0i would be better but the 2.8's rock fuckin solid and no vanos to worry about, i believe. also lots of power potential and knowledge from e36 wackos

downsides are the cheap shitty interior you'll be replacing parts from regularly and a fucking weird frankenstein suspension that loves rear wheel hop you can't really eliminate

that said, comfy interior and i personally adore the styling

just make sure you can drop at least a grand per year on repairs, and MAKE SURE you find a well cared for example, don't try to fix up a bad example it always costs more.

also make sure you have a garage or car port to work on it so you don't need to worry about time of day or weather

I'm just curious as to how hard motor swaps are and the pros and cons on its reliability I feel as though if you swap a motor of a car with one never meant for it it would do hell to your vehicles reliability
20 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>17388403
just do it properly and make sure that you don't exceed the vehicle's drivetrain, axles, and especially transmission limitations

>how hard
depends on motor to vehicle to transmission to OBD. sometimes, the motors fit right on the stock mounts which gets rid of all the hardware issues. then you have to fab all the connectors for the rest of the car unless there's a pre-built kit (like a lot of cummins / ls adapter kits).

>pros
if done by pros, whatever you want
>cons
if done by conartists, everything
>>
>>17388403
>I'm just curious as to how hard motor swaps are

the further away from the original engine specs you go, the harder it is. meaning swapping an inline 4 for another I4 with a bit more displacement is probably not too bad. trying to shove a v8 into a ford focus, however, pretty much requires you to be a mechanical engineer with a few years into the industry.

Only buy brand names. Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, BFGoodrich, etc.

Are you planning on offroading it at all, or just street/highway use?

Goodyear Wranglers, they have the same name so it must be good

I bought the Jeep because some clients are live off-road, even mountains. But, it's mostly highway I'll be hitting.

Where do you go to watch off road racing like pic related?

Seems like burgers aren't really into gravel/off road racing stuff like rally. I'm a brit that does the BTRDA rallies and a couple of local events, is there a similar racing scene in the USA?

I'd love to do some amateur baja truck racing. What do youu think of of road racing like this?
