How hard would Moby Dick be for someone who just started reading?
I've only read one book before (the wolf of wall street) and I would like to read Moby Dick next. Is it really wordy? Would I not be able to understand it properly?
its a book kids read in hs, i think, not american...

You will need to look up what some words mean just because people don't really use them anymore, but after 10% of the book you should pick most of it up. Other than that, there are a few references to things you might not know, like the parts of a ship as well as people and events in the bible.
Very hard and "boring" because there are a lot of descriptions of whales and other things marine-related. It's a book worth reading after you acquire much more experience and knowledge on literature. If you read it now, you'll definitely not find it amusing, For while the last pages that narrate the battle between the man and the whale are epic, the ones before those will be pretty boring for someone like you right now.
Why did she end the Bell Jar is a positive note? Was that other girl supposed to represent her?
Did she make the right choice considering her position?
The right choice as in killing herself I mean.
Who is this aryan semen snorter

>Why did she end the Bell Jar is a positive note?
Didn't her husband edit all her work? I know her mother forced her to release it under a false name. I'm guessing multiple concessions had to be made to satisfy her family and appearances.
What are some books I should casually namedrop in conversations to make myself seem smarter than I actually am?

Try this one
Just look at /lit/, that's pretty much what this board is about
Just talk about Gregory Berrycone
In 2016 I read 35 books. In 2017 I have read only 4...wat do?

hurry up
>>9720248
if your pic is any indication, you need to read more than just fantasy
>>9720248
Read shorter books :-) In addition to adding to your tally, you'll feel a greater sense of accomplishment for having finished more books in a short period of time
Unironically, why don't nihilists kill themselves.
>>9720114
>unironically
>>9720124
I'm actually curious. If one practices nihilism, why doesn't one just commit suicide right on the spot.
>>9720114
because they dont care
not even suicide makes sense in a world of senselessness
e-readers?

We literally have this thread every single day

Well, we do.
What is /lit/'s top three?
Mine are:
1) Vladimir Nabokov (which is interesting, given that English wasn't his first language);
2) James Joyce;
3) Cormac McCarthy.
Plot is next-to irrelevant. A good prose-stylist can make ordering from Taco Bell sound interesting.
Honorary English-translation author goes to Friedrich Nietzsche.

What does /lit/ think about Robert Musil's The man without Qualities ?
>>9719321
tl;dr
Is this worth reading? It's been on my list for some months now but have been putting it off because of its length.
>>9719321
easily one of the best novels of all time
Are there any good and worthwhile commentaries on the Iliad? I really enjoyed the introductory essay to Fagles' translation by Bernard Knox, and I'd love more like that, but it doesn't seem he's written any other commentaries.
Only one I could find is Kirk's commentary, but as far as I can tell it's made more for academics and people who've read it in the original Greek.
>>9719205
the intro to the penguin one had references to like 30 but i only really got curious about 2 or 3 and then never really got around to tracking them down
You're looking for Willcock's companion.
>>9719205
We know nothing of what literature preceded it and barely anything of the culture of the time.
In other words, what are you expecting from a commentary of it?
Read any good nonfiction lately, /lit/?
if you're one of those people who wastes their whole life on shitty social media (and lets face it 4chan is just anonymous facebook for non-normies) then you should def. read this shit, a "must read" if a may use such a phrase

>The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt by TJ Stiles
this sucked too, if you want capitalist porn, read Titan by Ron Chernow or old but good House Of Morgan also by Ron Chernow
i asked /his this question
figured i would ask you guys?
C.S Peirce
William James
>or Melville
>>9718216
Sellars or Rorty although no one will agree with the latter. James and Peirce are also good options though
That book you never could finish, despite really wanting to enjoy it. What's her name?

Got halfway through Wittgenstein's Mistress before I lost my fucking mind
Infinite Jest. I didn't find it amusing or enjoyable, although I can appreciate that DFW was clearly intelligent and tried to convey interesting ideas, but his way of over-analytical and over-descriptive writing just really became repetitive and off-putting. No doubt about it, a better editor and a shorter book would've made for a more worthwhile read.
So whats a good ultracheap and reliable laptop for writing on. I currently use a 2007 Core2 Duo Macbook that i got for $50, But are there other things that offer a superior writing experience or some better options for something I can get cheap and used to write on casually.
