Is it worth a read?
No just read
No, read Harold Bloom instead.
Try "How to Read a Book" instead
I've been gone from the States for five years, and now I'm back. Starting community college again next week. What should I expect? Do people actually use words like "shitlord"?

Not looking to make a fortune. Just planning to work in ESL in gookland like my other friends. They're doing pretty well for themselves, and having a great time.
I arrived here few weeks ago and realized that a lot of books and tales that me and some from my social circle consider "masterpieces" are seeing like pleb or some kind of trash. So /lit/ answer me what makes a book a good nook? Give me some recommendations by the way.
Who is this semen demon?

What are your favorite books published since 2010?
>>7560430
Brief History of Seven Killings is amazing.
>>7560430
I really enjoyed this years mainstream hit (pic related) though not all did
Certainly not my favourite but I can't think of many others right now

I'm not too avid of a reader but can someone tell me why pic related became such a huge hit? It's made me want to start writing because I don't think anything I come up with could possibly be as bad.

If you don't understand why, you'll never be a successful writer.
The publishing industry is a cabal. Cline knew someone, the publisher markets it through 'reviews', and word spreads.
It panders and isn't demanding in anyway. It's just wish-fulfillment.
You gotta know your audience brah
I've read Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, The Secret Agent and Almayer's Folly and have to say Nostromo was the most satisfying.
Any recommendations for what to read next? Some of his less well known work?
Lord Jim and the Secret Sharer. He wrote a play that's sort of interesting.
You know, you can literally just google "Joseph Conrad oeuvre" and get a list of stuff he wrote.

It's nice to hear what people enjoyed most/why, I have a lot of his books already.
What are some books similar to this?
I liked the dark humor more than the message.
Google tells me I might like Slaughterhouse-five, is this good?
Is the sequel to Catch 22 good?
>>7559695
Slaughterhouse Five then GR.
>>7559695
Slaughterhouse 5 is great.
Catch-23 not so much.
i actually liked closing time, but if you're looking for catch-22 electric boogaloo you'll be disappointed. it's a weird, flawed, bitter book about an old guy remembering how fun shit used to be with a couple of good ideas
something happened was the best other heller novel
neither of them are like catch-22
ITT We request and give tips on excellent bookstores and libraries on given cities.
I'll start, San Francisco
>>7559115
Is San Francisco a /lit/ city?
Requesting Toronto, specially Downtown
Furthermore is Toronto a /lit/ city?
For San Diego, I can only recommend Adam's Avenue Books (I suspect somebody here has gone there before, for reasons) and DG Wills, down Torrey Pines from UCSD. The university bookstores, btw, are good sources for scholarly readings, especially at the end of the quarter when everyone's desperate to unload their used books. Aside from that, UCSD has a respectably-sized and affordable book sale on Library Walk at the beginning and end of the school year. For anyone looking for a good Spanish-language selection, it's pretty dry north, but Tijuana is only a stone-throw away, and you need only get as far south as the Plaza de Rosario to find some good book stands (romantically frequented by the chubby prostitutes on display (the less said about these, the better) in the alleys and avenues).

I've never stayed in Frisco long enough to get a feel for it's urban literacy, although I am curious in case I ever end up staying for longer than an hour.

Main question:
>what does it take to be a successful writer? (A writer who can live off the money
they make from their book(s))
Extra:
Is it something you are just born able to do? Can anyone be a successful writer if they put the time into it? Or is it an equal mix of both?
What do all famous writers have in common?
>>7558982
>what do all famous writers have in common?
a fixed sum of talent (x), accessibility (y), and luck (z). x+y+z=100
you are born with talent
you can learn accessibility
no one has a handle on luck
>>7558982
>what does it take to be a successful writer? (A writer who can live off the money they make from their book(s))
Naturally want to create the kind of book that the market wants.
The skill needed to make a marketable novel is attainable by any average person who is willing to put in the work, which boils down to writing a lot and getting useful critique. This is pretty easy, as long as you have the work ethic.
The only major obstacle is for writers who insist on writing unmarketable works, or writers who would prefer to write something unmarketable but force themselves to conform.
>>7559012
i'd also like to point out that "successful" and "famous" writers are different. Success implies popularity and money where fame implies lasting appeal due to high-quality writing
So, I just bought this book. Should I expect something good?
>Stephen Pleb
>good
you should expect to go back to reddit
Bought it for like 0.99 , it's not like it was a huge investment
So can you come up with an original sentence right now and tell it to me?
Yes.
No.
A ceaseless empire bangs some little amoebas.
Who are your favourite aphorists, /lit/?
The poster known only as "Anonymous"
Giacomo Leopardi
If you haven't read Zibaldone you are literally a pleb.

Worth it in translation?
Is there any kind of consensus about the best translation of the Aeneid?
It's Fitzgerald
>>7558495
It's not Fitzgerald.
It's Mandelbaum
