Who are some writers who embody the phrase "style over substance"?
>>7575003
Not Nabokov, faggot.
>>7575003
Style is substance

Edgar Allan Poe
I haven't read this book because I had always heard it was unfinished. I was reading about his suicide today, and it said that this book was left bundled and tidied and neatly placed on his desk next to his suicide note? Sounds pretty finished to me.
>>7574922
unfinished or not its pretty good and I would recommend reading it
>>7574956
Did that dude in your photo kill himself?
>>7574922
It's very much unfinished. There are notes in the back for what else would have been included. There was going to be a picnic where everyone gets dosed w/lsd & a terrorist attack by a native american woman. It probably would have been pretty good.
what do you think about this book?
Phenomenal.
>>7574910
currently reading it, and enjoying it.
Magical realism is the pizza monkey cheese XDD of literary fiction
Should I sign up on goodreads?
I kind of don't get it. Is it like a big book club? A big group of book clubs? Like yelp for books?
If it's just like yelp or facebook for books, I'm not interested. Is there something more to it?
What's it about and is there something better?
It's a cool place to keep track of books you've read and the number of pages. You can also set goals for yourself, see what your friends are reading, read reviews and more. I use it to keep track of everything I've read.
Don't overthink it. It's a nifty little website.
It's alright for keeping a list of what have you read and have some statistics at the end of the year.
Anyone who uses the attention whoring functions is a fucking faggot.
>Oedipa settled back, to await the crying of lot 49
fucking really? I dropped it there
You aren't funny

ITT: Favorite living contemporary writers
For me it’s Houellebecq – intelligent, nihilistic and with a wicked sense of humor.
houellebecq is a frustrated virgin. My favorite is pennac
>tfw Hollenbecq is my favorite living writer and I'm not even memeing
Joseph McElroy is breddy gewd.
I'll start with James Sallis's "Drive"
The entire story of this movie was just one chapter in the book, but it expanded a perfunctory and mean episode clumsily dismissed by a bullet ex machina into a compelling drama, successfully extracting the pearl of value within the maundering angsty dross surrounding it.

Fist Gang, obv.
>>7574663
Don't you mean Kubrick made something great out of King's Dung?
>professor pronounces it 'albearh camoo'
I really don't like when things are pronounced correctly.
>professor mentions a charlatan like Camus period

I get the minimalism, it's nice. But... Come on... We get it, we got it already, why is this a big deal?
Who /dreamjournal/ here?
>>7574613
Yeah dude. After keeping one for a little while I get more vivid dreams, more frequently.
>>7574613
I have one. It's pretty fun, but I can't manage to change my daily routine to the point where I can dream before I wake up and still remember them because I get up very early and start doing stuff right away. Thus my dream journal is limited to weekends only.
Also, I'm a bit uncomfortable writing about lewd things in dreams in specifics because I do them to people I know.
>>7574613
I used to do it a lot but its been a year or two. I have been thinking about getting back into it. I have managed to fly high in the sky which was pretty dope. Asking people stuff can be frustrating, I have asked dream people what do they represent and they only smile back or ask me what I represent.
I would like to get more into dream yoga though. I tried practicing pure light meditation one time by calming my mind and attempting to meditate and just focus on the experience and then I was surrounded by and bathed in clear light and it was bliss, when I woke up I felt like a million bucks. Being able to do that for an extended period every night would probably do wonders for mood, motivation and focus during the day. I read a bit into pic related but never finished it although I plan on it especially if I start dream journaling again.
What is also really interesting are cases where people in different locations meet up in dreams and then have shared lucid dreams and then wake up and write it down and their versions are almost the same even though they don't communicate while awake. Dream telepathy. I once mentioned this to a friend also into lucid dreaming and he mentioned that in some indigenous tribe in Peru or some other country attaining mastery of lucid dreaming was the first step required when one receives the training to become a shaman and he speculated that this was because this would then allow one to receive further training from ones teacher while in the dream world. Sorry if this post was all over the place but its late where I am and I'm going to bed.
I recently picked up pic related because I want to into philosophy and I've been told these are the basically the classics. What are some other must read books for those who are interested in philosophy? I'm almost done with Meditations by Aurelius and am enjoying it, any recommendations for other stoic philosophers would be appreciated as well.
where's Philosophical Investigations
>>7574480
>Dover Thrift
OP, why do you do this
also anything from Diogenes
>>7574503
I'm a poorfag in college and the Dover Thrift editions were really cheap and highly rated on Amazon. How bad did I fuck up?
What /lit/erary courses are you taking in the coming semester, anon? What's your major?

What are Books that changed your life /lit/?
>>7570347
mostly just changed how I saw things but I guess that counts
>>7574386
Ah, sorry, didn't see that thread.
>>7574392
no worries, it basically died from people only posting jokes anyway instead of being serious so we can always do a serious one here
just a tip for next time though if you want a more serious thread where people open up you would be better off posting a picture that is more neutral like a nature scene so people don't feel like the thread is being made by a joker/troll/etc.
Can someone read my short story and tell me if i should even continue writing. Is this interesting to read at all? pastebin/vkJrxyqN

ITT: books that women don't understand
a shorter list would be "books women understand"
here it is:
>books whining about how life is dull when men aren't doing things for you, and how you wish more men would do things for you
>books about being on your existential period ("what if men stop doing things for me.. forever?")
>books about being on your actual period
>books about trivial gossip about men and/or women's relationships to men
>books about how swell your vagina is, and how much men love you
>books about how "Society" (the Great Omni-Man in the Sky) should do more things for you
>books about things coming out of your vagina, and what to do with them (aka the "flush it or feed it" genre)
