Why was Atlas Shrugged so good? This book really makes you take a good hard look at yourself and your behavior, which is why I think a lot of people don't like this book. It's a lecture and most people don't like to get lectured. I loved it. It gave me a good swift kick in the ass. While I've never been a "looter," I have made several irrational decisions in my life, which this 1000+ page lecture has helped me to stop doing. It teaches you to think with your mind, rather than your heart.

You have a man who fought for his country and became incredibly rich through his own means, hard work, and ingenuity. Does he enjoy his wealth and new found social status? Does he honor his fallen comrades by living the life they no longer can? Does he find happiness and peace after a long struggle that was his life?

No, he does not. You have a crybaby who pines after a woman whom she herself does not recognize as a man by throwing parties for people he does not care for and who neither love him, nor accept him, in return. He's so desperately in love with this shade, this thing that can't be described as human so akin is she to be more properly described as an ornament, with no interesting qualities or redeeming features except her face and body, that he buys a house, an entire structure with the surrounding land, right across from where she lives. He himself does not even have the courage to properly face and express his love for her, even if it means facing off against an obvious, if not mentally deficient, at the very least emotionally disturbed, terrible and insufferable human being. So what is his reward after all of this? A death that no one acknowledges, save for one sniveling coward.

So to reiterate, and tl;dr, fuck this book, fuck the people in it, fuck the "scenery" and "imagery", fuck everything in it, and fuck you and everyone else for thinking this was anything other than a glorified pseudo-psychological bullshit profile into the mind of a self-destructive, whiny, sad sack of shit known simply as Gatsby. I hate this book so fucking much.

I get free ones at the bookstore whenever I buy a book. If I don't have one handy, a piece of paper works fine. During summer, a small flower picked from the field I was reading in will have to do.

You only need one if you're a plebshit who stops a reading session mid-chapter

Once in secondary school I had a crush on a boy who was into literature too, so I made him a bookmark asking if he'd go out with me in cross-stitch.

This book was fucking great. Why isn't cape literature a bigger genre?

I hear you man. I have read a couple cape novels that were pretty good.

It's Superman by Dehaven was great. Like the Flescher cartoon Superman com to life. Very real, very gritty at times and you really got to get into Superman and the suporting cast's heads.

The Flash - Stop Motion by Schultz is another good one. Its a story starring Wally but Barry loomes large. He is always in Wally's thoughts even as he fghts a super speed serial killer. The scenes with running were really well written. You felt their love for speed and their devotion, almost worship of the speed force. So many great moments in that book that made me really love and appreciate Wally even more.

I often wish DC and Marvel would do more novels with good authors suited to book. Imagine a writer lke Jeffrey Deaver doing a Batman book or better yet a sereis? How about a Lee Child written Punisher? A Dr Strange by Brian Sanderson? Gayle Lynds written Wonder Woman? Dan Abnett, Brad Thor, Jim Butcher?

A bunch of authors are out there who can do a good cape book if the companies could attract them. I think the experience of reading a superhero novel can be quite different from a comic. There are some things novels do better that comics (both arts have their advantages).

Could also broaden or even open up new markets to the comic companies. Write them like pulps, hard boiled detective thriller, modern techno thriller. I woud read the fuck out of a Captain America written in a Clancy or Ludlum style.

He seems like he would work better in a book than a comic or movie considering he can basically stop time then run around and think a thousand times as fast as what's going on around him.

We always have these threads about depressed people wanting to better themselves by exploring the wonderful world of books and I think we need a simple guide they can all turn to.

After much consideration, here are a list of books to read through to turn you into a healthy happy human being.

1. Harry Potter - These books will provide you with a comfy fantasy world to help you forget about real world feels. These books you make you feel, but in the context of fiction, you'll help deal with real feels.

2. A Song of Ice and Fire - It may seem like these books are depressing, and they are, but like above, they will help you deal with your feels better, but on a mature level. You'll learn about how history and politics shape our lives and maybe you'll learn to care about real world issues and give you a reason to help change the world.

3. Meditations - this is by a famous Roman emperor and it contains a lot of helpful advice on being a calm rational person in the face of a problem. Most philosophy books are concerned with weird metaphysical questions, but some of them are actually very helpful in letting you live a good life and this is one of them.

4. The Odyssey - Odysseus is an example of a character who's done just as much good IRL as most real people. He has helped as a role model for everyone finding their way home in the journey of our lives.

4.5 (optional). Ulysses - This book is a modern day retelling of The Odyssey. It isn't really necessary to improve your life, and it isn't meant to be. It's just a fun mix of styles and it's packed with many literary references which you may not get, but that's okay. If you think this sounds like a fun book, you can have fun with it, but it being mostly style over substance, it's okay to skip out on it for now.

5. Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace is often treated as a saint because he realized all of the terrible cynicism caused by irony in our modern era, and knew that the only way to defeat it is to live life more sincerely. Infinite Jest is a very long and difficult book, but it's very rewarding. You'll feel stronger when you finish it and learn to better live in our cynical ironic world.

You should also know that you shouldn't feel bad if these books take a long time to finish. If you have your own pace for reading, then it's okay to follow it because reading is about improving yourself and you know what's best for yourself.

I hope this guide will be very helpful for you. Happy reading!

No bullying.

People who learned (or currently learning) another language by themselves, how did you do it? Where did you start, how did you practice, what did you use for guidance (study book, internet), etc? Any tips?

learn basic grammer, grind vocabulary with Anki and start to read as fast as possible, once you get a feel for the basics add listening/watching movies to your daily routine.

remember, learning a language is all about immersion (which can done by means of the internet) in your target language as wel as repetition.

getting some exercise books might help but personally I dont find them necissary as you will eventually get a natural feeling for the grammer of your target language.

good luck OP, remember the rapidity of your progress depends solely on your own motivation so always keep reminding yourself why you wanted to learn the language in the first place.

i think duolingo works
its way better than most other software
i did the italian duolingo course sparsely for about a monthand i can understand most written italian i see, not counting all the nouns
>>
I taught myself two languages to complete fluency—I teach one of them as a living—and another one to business level. You should give up every software minus Anki, and you should keep it as a starting point. Don't rely too much on it, don't add too much fields and don't download a deck. Creating and teaching is itself the best way to remember an information. Find a nice textbook—two are fine but don't pointlessly accumulate learning material—and a complete dictionary, both physicial, and once you've progressed enough trade your dictionary with a native one. Give it all in grammar while learning vocabulary on a steady rythme. Try to speak with people engaged in academics in the target language, or who are proven to have a excellent command, and avoid natives and current learners. Read, read, read, take notes, rewrite them, read and eventually teach out what you found. That's the best way to progress.

I consider myself not very retarded but I could barely start this book. The language seems far too distant from today's English. Also it seems like he says something in a paragraph that could be said in a sentence. How do American teenagers read Shakespear in high school?

Instead of engaging with life, he withdrew and tried to find "the answer" in books. Then, every time he tried to re-engage with life, he was so stunted that it led to crushing humiliation, and he rationalized returning to his books by thinking he just hadn't studied enough yet.
