Any good gambling fiction? I just read a section of Bridge on the Drina where a man gambles his soul with the Devil on a misty night and was inspired.
Dostoevsky's The Gambler?

Post obscure literary terms/concepts/phrases:
>Narratology:
>An offshoot of structuralism which seeks to apply the linguistic model to the analysis of narrative. Its enabling distinction is between story (the "actual" chronological sequence of events) and discourse (the order in which those events are presented to the reader). Narratology attempts to construct a poetics of fiction or grammar of storytelling, analyzing the codes, conventions, and systems that structure all narration.

Authorial interference: when the writer of a text attempts to correct interpretations of its meaning.
Remember Naramemes? People were so excited about it here but now everyone forgot about it, probably because it didn't make much sense desu.
>new book in series comes out, didn't now until today
>work at library, hyped that I can just put a hold on it and not pay money for it
>not in the system
>since it came out just into the month, probably won't get it until June
Fug. What upcoming releases are you all excited for?Oh also fuck international publishers, britbongs got this and the first 2 6 months before us.
Probably only Zero K, and I'm only marginally exited for it.

Is that another fucking hunger games clone?
>>7999095
No. It's about a future where people had to use radical generic engineering to stop a 'plague' that would end humanity, then, when the corporations realized the possible uses of the technology and knowledge they had, created various new 'sub-humans' made for various, specific tasks. (Think 14+ fingers and long arms, ridiculously tall people, or on the extereme end, a child who's brain mimics a computer and can work with them faster than even the brightest CS PH.Ds, but had little to no emotion/understanding of others.) The events of the book are of people trying to get these people free and give them rights as humans. (The people are called Gens, because each corp. gave their creations a specific color of neon-bright hair, so show who they belonged to/were made by.) This is the 3rd in what I believe the author said would be a trilogy.
Is William Trevor best living short stories writer, or it's Alice Munro?

What are their best novels for you?
When Holden's prostitute arrives she says he looks like the boy from captains courageous. Holden has no idea what she's talking about and the readers most likely don't either. I got curious so I looked up the actor and found out I somewhat resemble him. Does this mean I'm gonna harass strangers about ducks? I think that's only logical.
It means you'll rape your sister, Phoebe.
Has anyone dropped out of college to teach themselves? Would you recommend? Is the professor and austerity of the schedule necessary?

It's okay.

Teach yourself what? What career are you hoping to have? Some things can be self-taught. But some careers require a degree, no matter if you know your stuff otherwise.
Recommend books about suicide.

In your heart you know the answer.the bible
Kafka and Kleist's short stories will make you feel while also amusing you
Moby Dick is like a Bible; there's something for everyone to enjoy and ruminate on
WEB DuBois' Souls of Black Folk traces how and why black people got boned the fuck over in the US and helps with empathy for their position
I'm afraid to ask here because this is the most religious board I've seen, but I would like to discuss Darwin.
I'm looking for an up-to-date version of The Origin of Species, keeping focus on nature and its workings rather than science. I am an atheist but I don't care about the whole evolution bit, I just want a good naturally descriptive book. Sort of like a field guide

One tip for you. Don't talk religious shit to religious people or atheist people. Neither knows their shit. All they know is screaming profanity at each other and at each other's "god". Also they have no idea what actually a "Gee Oh Dee" is.
How would you define a well-made character, /lit/? It seems very easy to stumble into writing mary sues or other types of common cliches and endlessly redone archetypes, or to accidentally turn the protagonist into a self-insert.
Is a more complex character inherently better than a simple one? Is a realistic character better than one clearly constructed for dramatic purposes? Is an arc and a significant change necessary for a character to be written well? Who are some of the most well done characters in literature?
>>7995731
fundamentally, characters are arcs. at best you can subvert structure by replacing 'one arc over 3 acts' with repeated one-scene arcs or something similarly weird, but if you get any further away, you're writing experimental modernism aka poetry, not narrative fiction.
>>7995747
So if a major character remains static throughout the story, would you consider him to be poorly written? Or are there cases where a character's tendency not to change can be interesting in and of itself, like in the Sound and the Fury when Quentin and Jasonare unable to cope with a changing world? People often claim that this makes them "flat," I guess.
>>7995731
do what bradbury does, draw a scene, let a character wander into it. don't concern yourself wit freud and jung before you know what your story is about
I just started the Wheel of Time series. I'm a few chapters into the first book. It is absolute dogshit. I know the series is thirteen books long or so. Is it even worth it?

Why don't you read the next 4,000,000+ words and find out?

I am arguing with a friend on what makes a philosopher, he argues charlie kaufman is a philosopher because his films explore philosophical themes how do I explain to him the most simple way possible how he is wrong
>>7999190
>arguing on youtube
if you know he's wrong it should be no problem for a smart guy like yourself to explain why.
>>7999283
Well I explained he is not trying to contribute to philosophy he doesn't work on philosophical problems so he is not a philosopher. When he makes films there made for entertainment not to solve philosophical problems or contribute towards philosophy.
