Please help /lit/. I think my sister has gotten interested in analytic philosophy. How do stop her from going down the wrong path?
37 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8221751

Tell her that analytic philosophers are merely LARP'ing as mathematicians/physicists, because they are too stupid for the latter two subjects.
>>
Get her to start with Frege and then be really sneaky and slip some Cohen and Natorp in there. Then tie her up and punch her in the tits over and over again until she understands what intentionality means and starts saying "always already" when describing epistemological stances or semantic content. When you think she's ready, show her some Quine. If she starts making pained faces and asking for something a little less discursively naive, let her go. If not, you're gonna have to start breaking fingers.

Her works are utter shit in prose and content.

Furthermore, she included in her serious the spell "Avada Kedavra", which is the killing curse (for non-readers) and cannot be stopped with any known shielding spell. HOWEVER it can be countered by an equally powerful caster using a similar offensive spell. And yet, she is an anti-gun liberal cunt in real life, somehow doesn't see the parallel to actual guns. Are there any other authors this out of touch with the themes of their own novels?

It remains a mystery to me, anon. I truly detest this woman and any of her fans who think that HP is legitimate fantasy.

I'm looking for a protagonist who is actually alienated from humanity and not just a disturbed human like in pic related.

How do you internalize philosophy or very prose-heavy writing, and then apply it to life?

I feel as if i am only recognizing what i am reading on the surface and am not absorbing the ideas presented to me in word fully, and so am wasting my time reading.

I've only begun reading outside of non-fiction recently, and have been set on finishing "The Ego and It's Own". Is this too heavy to start with?

My mind feels clouded and confused when reading.

Read it, then think about it, until it becomes essentially organic. Schopenhauer put it well, but I can't find the aphorism right now.

Basically, until you make a thought (or piece of knowledge) your own, it is essentially a prosthetic limb.

I've been very guilty of 'reading without thinking'. I recently read Beyond Good & Evil, and would be hard-pressed to tell you anything I remember.

My sincere advice is to read Plato.

What are some books about finding happiness in solitude? I need a way to accept loneliness.

Women are simply inferior, your better off without them
>>

there isnt any reasoning behind womens inferiority

as bitter as i am (and trust me, im pretty fucking bitter) it is not the fault of a gender for my loneliness and it is immature and vindictive to think otherwise

This man is alleged to have read over 10,000 books in his life, /lit/.

Do you think that's possible?

I'm not convinced that it's possible to give that many books the proper amount of thought/consideration for the sake of reading. Too many people read without thinking, or rather, read without thinking about what they've read. Read merely for the sake of reading. I think this is an example of just that.

Schopenhauer said we should think at least as much, if not more, than what we read. Likewise Kant, quoting Abbé Terrasson, pointed out:

>"If we measured a book, not by the number of its pages, but by the time we require for mastering it, then it could be said of many a book that it would be shorter if it were not so short."

"To a woman, everything is an adornment"

I still think this is the most astute, succinct and unbiased explanation for the fundamental differences between male and female behavior. Nietzsche's views on women in general were one of the more interesting parts of his social commentary imo even though most scholars follow Kaufmann's mantra that they were just peripheral and the weakest parts of his work.

except their child
>>
>>8219978
The child is all female wants of men which was Nietzsche's other observation, but the child is also an adornment. Just look at how society lavishes attention on pregnant women, notice how women constantly post baby pictures and quickly identify as 'mom' to claim the social prestige that comes with motherhood. Women get postpartum depression because the attention and special treatment that she got during her pregnancy go away.

My sister has been pregnant 3 times now and each time she moaned about the sickness and inconvenience of it all, yet she keeps getting pregnant. Her hubby was fine with just one child but she insists on more. She needs more adornments for her collection. The cradle is an over glorified jewelery box.

Do we really need a thread to reassert our feelings of superiority over women for the upteenth time?

I want to start reading lit in Spanish (foreign language). Give me some relatively easy prose Spanish lit, but good Spanish lit, that I can read in original in order to hone my Spanish, but also hone my literary patricianism at the same time.

my spanish mate said don quixote is harder to read for him in spanish than in english.

Cervantes makes it a joke to use archaic spanish for the don to make him seem that much more crazy. (Imagine shakespeare using what he considered old english as a laugh).
>>
>>8219657
yeah, pic obviously unrelated, I guessed so too. I'd actually rather some newer stuff (as in, the last 100-150 years) but I'm not picky in any way if it's good and relatively easy for a self-taught Spanish learner to read.

What are some novels I can read on the philosophy that the "mask" you wear is more important than the truth that's inside, because your mask is what has an affect on the world and the way people see you? What is this type of philosophy called? I asked because I recently completed the videogame "Majora's Mask," and that was a heavy theme in it, so I want to do more research on it.

What are your thoughts on short story lengths? I'm currently editing a piece of mine which, when all done and dusted, will be around 10,000 words. I think this is fine and it's as long as it needs to be but I'm wondering what others think as 10,000 seems to be the upper limit for a lot of journals and such.

> Thoughts on the "long story".

P.S it's a Wallacian, symphonic, urban-tragedy, but if you can believe it is also actually rather good.

10,000 words will probably hit about 20 pages or so. That's a good size for a short story.

The upper cap for a short story should be "I can read this in one sitting." That's ultimately why you're writing a short story and not a novella or a novel. 20 pages is well within that.
The lower bound is a bit tricky. If you can make a meaningful story in a few pages, you have quite the talent for terseness.
If I didn't know the author beforehand I'd say it should be 6-7 pages minimum.
