Victorian nostalgia themed fantasy that allowed children to easily imagine themselves stepping into the world. The books really arent terrible as far as childrens books go and theres nothing wrong with having fond memories of them. The Young Adult defebse force assholes claiming its equivelant to high literature are cancer tho.

Easy story that came at the right, allowed people to growth up with it and as time passed, tackled deeper and darker subjects. Also likable characters, and did not focus exclusively on a love story, but rather how to endure and overcome the hardships of our life.

I'm reading "Depraved
the shocking true story of America's first serial killer"

So far it's not too boring. It's started to get good and it's just the beginning.

This "pharmacist" had relocated to Chicago, built a 3 story sprawling building that became known as "the castle." It was essentially designed as a fun house of confusing hallways, traps, and a cellar with things like a stretching rack, surgical implements and he had built a kiln that was perfectly sized for human bodies.

I just loved this detail because it would never occur to me to build a place, in a public place no less, that is designed as a human trap and torture playhouse. Some of the rooms were asbestos lined sound proofed, others were completely lined with sheet metal. He had a valve in his room to control the flow of natural gas into rooms. There were hidden shoots that went directly to the basement cellar. Ostensibly most of the rooms were simply furnished rooms for rent.

It made me think of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari that emphasized odd angles and hypnosis as methods of control. Fun!

I don't see any femininity as a theme, but, indeed, the book is about a masculine way of life, as japanese see it. You would the same themes a lot in anime and manga, though, of course, in a much more diluted and westernised way. It's a classical question of pursuing your dream versus obtaining happiness in small life, which, generally, only appears for a man. Though, of course, it's not the Dream Ryuji was seeking, but Glory (and death): a japanese particularity.

I'm tempted to say that the book is a metaphor for a ritual suicide, or seppuku: should a samurai be unable to attain glory by killing himself, his second, kaishakunin, would cut samurai's head and thus save his honor. Nodoru is the second then, as Ryuji forfeited the honor by settling down. It is worth mentioning that the author committed seppuku himself.

On a related note, I enjoyed finding the phrase "he maintained that their genitals were for copulating with stars in the Milky Way", for it reminds of a certain famous anime. Japanese culture is, of course, interconnected.

norton anthology of critical theory. take the theory/criticism course your uni (likely/should) offers. if it doesn't make you hate theory/lit crit ask your professor for advice on what else to read.

it's a highly academic and somewhat esoteric field, and a lot of your preconceived notions on what lit crit entails are likely mistaken. harold bloom writes "pop" lit crit insofar as such a thing exists, there are some differences with "real academia" lit crit.
