how long would it take to learn how to write a novel
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
a year? idk
>>
I'm in the process now, quit my job and have committed full time to this, from what I understand writing a novel requires a lot more reading than writing. That is if you want to write a decent novel. Commercial fiction authors turn out several a year....

why is the verb for traversing in any kind of boat "sail"? what if the boat doesn't have a sail?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
The verb with this literal meaning is 'navigate', from the Latin 'navis' (ship) and 'agere' (go/do).

This has come to mean 'find one's way' though.

Although the Romans themselves said 'in navi vehi', 'be carried in a ship'.
>>
>>8304260
I don't see any form of sail in any of those Latin words
>>
>>8304957
The point is that 'navigate' is the word you're looking for.

The other point is that Latin never really had a word for it either, it's not limited to English. 'navigate' was properly to control the ship.

>In his writing, Gilles Deleuze drew on a vast array of source material, from philosophy and psychoanalysis to science and art. Yet scholars have largely neglected one of the intellectual currents underlying his work: Western esotericism, specifically the lineage of hermetic thought that extends from Late Antiquity into the Renaissance through the work of figures such as Iamblichus, Nicholas of Cusa, Pico della Mirandola, and Giordano Bruno. In this book, Joshua Ramey examines the extent to which Deleuze's ethics, metaphysics, and politics were informed by, and can only be fully understood through, this hermetic tradition.Identifying key hermetic moments in Deleuze's thought, including his theories of art, subjectivity, and immanence, Ramey argues that the philosopher's work represents a kind of contemporary hermeticism, a consistent experiment in unifying thought and affect, percept and concept, and mind and nature in order to engender new relations between knowledge, power, and desire. By uncovering and clarifying the hermetic strand in Deleuze's work, Ramey offers both a new interpretation of Deleuze, particularly his insistence that the development of thought demands a spiritual ordeal, and a framework for retrieving the pre-Kantian paradigm of philosophy as spiritual practice.

What do you guys think about this? Was Deleuze an obscurantist? Have any of you read the book?

Also /deleuze/ general if there is any interest.

You sleep soundly at night as voices carry on downstairs. You swallow the humid air as you awake from a dream you cannot recall. A man at the foot of the bed clicks something and reminds you to be still. He repeats to you a list of activities and thoughts, beginning with that dream and ending with a phone call you made twelve years ago. ‘You’ve done a lot in that time,’ he says. ‘Who hasn’t?’ you respond. He smiles at this and leaves. You see him frequently from then on, in stores and meetings.
He is the kind of man to wave a flag on those special days, special games. At night, he creeps into his fifteen year old daughters bedroom and molests her while his wife chain-smokes in the other room in front of a high-definition television, blaring a sitcom that ended years ago. He sits at a desk with a donut and fills out paperwork for half an hour before taking a little coffee break. He votes for the latest delusion. At the end of his life, he asks his daughter to forgive, which she actually does. He imagines himself in heaven with all his dead friends and family, but instead he finds himself in hell, with me, where we endure an eternity together, coming to terms with one another, loving each other.

He steps out of his vehicle and takes out his flashlight while advancing towards a nondescript door leading to a series of doors in a shit part of his city. In six years, he’d already seen things that would have broken a lesser man but not him because he’d been raised to be fearless and strong. The face of evil and adversity had met him in many forms and each time, good had prevailed and he went home to his wife and children, full of life and secure, a city sleeping peacefully.
After realizing her weekly absences and getting her location from the many resources for finding people available to him, he gets inside. He sees that there is light coming from under a door further down. Muffled voices grunt as he closes the light, adjusts to the darkness and withdraws his firearm. When he opens the door, he sees his wife being penetrated by two men while another films. His wife doesn’t immediately see him because her eyes are closed and her mouth around the man requires concentration, the multi-tasking.
When the training and reflex take hold, the hero fires at the man with his hands on her head and then at the man behind her. The cameraman realizes through the lens what has happened and turns to beg, but our protagonist has no time for this and knocks him unconscious with the butt of his handgun.
His wife still contains the organ of the dead black man behind her so he has to remove him. She is already explaining and pleading but he does not listen. He begins to cry as he hits her repeatedly in the face with his open palm until her nose is bleeding and she is crying as well. He unbuckles his pants as she becomes more confused than hurt and stammers ridiculous questions, we are all aware, this man is of peace and god, forgiving and full of love. He makes love to his wife that does not understand his sacrifice for his city. He tastes the salty spillage from the cameraman or whoever last finished in her mouth. ‘Oh god!’ he exclaims after a few minutes of arrhythmic humping.

So, does anyone else think that Denna is a Chandrian? Or maybe working for them?

Only other thing I can think of is she's possibly an Amyr/Sithe/Singer.

Or is the Savien/Aloine thing with Kvothe and nothing more the most likely?

Romance is personal, you need to write in a way that the thing you've written sounds beautiful in your mind.

Allegory, metaphor, pure truth, emotion, whatever works.

...ordinary people can use it to successfully solve very large, complex design problems...

A pattern language is a method of describing good design practices or patterns of useful organization within a field

A story field is
a psycho-social field of influence
generated by the resonance and interactions

Our story field
frames what we think is real, acceptable, and possible,
and directly shapes our lives and our world,

Change the story field of a culture
and we change what is real, acceptable, and possible...

The gift of storytelling may be one of life's most powerful...

The Hidden College is a secretive group that wields a lot of influence in the US. They are based in Silicon Valley and DC.

>They are right-wingers who adhere to the neoreactionary ideology, though many are former progressives or even communists.

>They are also believed to be behind the cryptic Cicada 3301 puzzle organization: http://uncovering-cicada.wikia.com/wiki/Does_Cicada_3301_originate_from_UC_Berkeley_group_(cicada.berkeley.edu)_in_90s%3F

>Relatively new compared to other secret groups – oldest members were collaborating in the 1990s, but as a group they only started in the early 2010s.

>Relatively young group of people: generation X and generation Y. Definitely not a fan of the direction the baby boomers took US culture and government.

>They are a mixture of engineers and journalists who use their influence to try to push the popular narrative in a certain direction.

>They are rumored to have turned the public against certain narratives, such as black lives matter, and made blockchain software mainstream.

>They are believed to communicate mostly online over some kind of message board system, but also meet in real life.

>They are rumored to have wealthy patrons who cloak their activities in the superficial trappings and rituals of occult groups as a diversion. This might be a bullshit diversion though.

>They base many of their beliefs around the writings of Mencius Moldbug, a computer engineer, and Nick Land, a Shanghai-based British philosopher. Only Nick Land’s blog is still updated, however: http://www.xenosystems.net/

>They currently have funding and approval to build a privately-owned city in Kazakhstan.

So This probably isn't the best place to ask but I don't know of a better one So I figured I'd try here anyway.

Which is the best translation of Livy's
The History of Rome? The Penguin version by Sélincourt, the Oxford version by Luce, or the Hackett version by Warrior? I guess there's also the Loeb version by Foster but don't want to spent $900 or so on that set while I'm not fluent in Latin.

I can't offer an exact answer since I've only ever read Penguin's Livy, but what I can say is:

-Not all the Penguin volumes are Selincourt. IIRC it's volumes 1 and 3, with volumes 2 and 4 translated by others.

-The Penguin editions lack Livy's bullet-point overview of all his books ("Periochae") which helps fill in a lot of the blanks caused by so much of his work being missing. I know this list is in the Oxford edition, I think in the last volume.

-With all that said, Penguin was an absolute blast. It is easily the most captivating and exciting Roman history I've read so far (and I've read quite a few), and the Penguin translations were consistently fun as hell. It was the first "primary" source that got me really excited about history.

A few tidbits to give you an idea of what kind of style and subject matter you can expect:

>One thousand pounds’ weight of gold — the price of a nation soon to rule the world.

>Punishment, though late not light, found out at last the proud and remorseless amongst men.

>“Do you wish to compete with the commons in disregard of principle?”

>It was as if a flood were sweeping over Rome, and drowning men had no thoughts to spare for politics.

>"God has given to man no sharper spur to victory than contempt of death.”

>It was sounds, not sights, they turned to face — the groans of wounded men, the thud or ring of blows on body or shield, the shout of onslaught, the cry of fear.

>The defence of Italy had failed — the war henceforward would be at home, to save the City…He would not be absent at this crisis of its fate.

>Hannibal under the double blow of so great a public and personal distress exclaimed: “Now, at last, I see the destiny of Carthage plain!"

>So great, in this grim time, was the nation’s heart.

>“We ask for toil and danger, for leave to play a man’s, and a soldier’s, part."

>“As if the desire for fame were coextensive only with the span of human life, and the greatest part of it were not what lives on in the memory of posterity.”

>“What of your oath?” he cried. “Was it as beaten men that you swore to leave the field? Are you more afraid of a cowardly enemy than of Mars and Jupiter by whose names you swore? I swore no oath; but I will either return victorious or die fighting here, Quintus, by your side. Brother, is it words that will make them fight? No — but the gods by whom they have sworn. Come, let us give them courage for it not by words but by deeds — like leaders, like men!”

>"I have as much courage to die as to kill. It is our Roman way to do and to suffer bravely."

>When every man must die, all that mattered was whether he died fighting in the line, where the common chances of war often raised the vanquished and crushed the victor, or whether later on amidst the smouldering ruins of the town, dishonoured by chains and tortured with the lash, he breathed his last before the eyes of wife and children, prisoners in the enemy’s hands.

PS Enjoy it! Livy is fucking awesome.
