Was it all a meme? Look at the pic's title if you don't know what this is. The left middle one has the letters S H I T in it, by the way, the I and T are part of the H.
I just ordered it a day ago, looks look I fell for the meme by the looks of it as well
>>8307380
shut up
>>8307391
It's also got things like newspaper clippings with scribbles off on the side, nearly illegible handwritten pages, a typewritten page, and a mockup of several book blurbs with excerpts from actual early negative reviews of The Recognitions and the reviewer's names only barely changed in it.
>tfw Herman Melville is literally the only American fiction author worth reading
What about Carver?
>>8307381
What about him?
I believe he's amazing. Wondering where you live too, since you are so happy to shit on my proud AMERICAN literary heritage
was he right, /lit/?
>>8307348
ofc
i want to punch his smug face
>>8307531
I wont let you
So it appears that a large amount of /lit/ uses or have used heroin or other opiates. Can someone explain this meme to me?
t. straightedge
hey, i love wil ferrel
>>8307328
We haven't really, we just lie in the increasingly desperate hope of looking cool.
Take your most intense orgasm, multiply it by 100 and do that for an hour. You now know what it is to shoot good heroin. Then it shreds your life. You now know what it is to be an addict. You should probably limit your conversation to books while you're here though
So I ordered a few books but it's going to take a week or so until they get here. In the meantime I have pic related and The Road byCormac McCarthy. Which is better, and/or which should I read first?
>>8307236
>So I ordered a sirloin steak but it's going to take 20 minutes or so for the food to arrive. In the meantime I have a basket of brea and an ashtray full of cigar ends. Which is better, and/or which should I eat first?
>>8307265
Witty analogy, I'll give you that. But if I knew one was good and one was shitty, I wouldn't come here asking which one to read. I'll assume your preference lies with Vidal.
If I enjoyed Gravity's Rainbow, would I like The Recognitions?
Are they in any way similar in style?
I saw The Recognitions at the library and it had an "Oprah Book Club" sticker, so I put it back
Gaddis is the best post-Joyce novelist, so yes
Is it fedora to put busts of great authors on your bookshelf?
>>8307102
yes
>>8307102
winston churchill put busts on his desk, but he was usually related the people they depicted.
but i think wore top hats not fedoras
>>8307102
Sorry plastic model busts from Barnes? Yes.
Actual marble busts done by hand by a true sculptor? No.
what did he mean by this?
>>8307025
He wanted to watch his wife be bred by more French bulls.
>>8307025
my whole life was a sham
Do tools effect the work?
Will a piece written on a typewriter be any different (thematically, grammatically, etc.) from a piece written on a laptop? Will the pen 'n paper writer create different stories from the writer who simply dictates to an autowrite?
I'm not asking if different writers write different works (of course they do), only if the tools with which a writer uses has any effect on the actual literary values of the works they create.
>>8306802
>Do tools effect the work?
No, the tools don't effect the work, the man effects the work, but he does so with the tool.
>>8306811
A writer who uses a typewriter is more likely to be more pretencious in his writing
A writer who uses an internet connected laptop is more likely to have specific references in his writing because he has the internet at his fingertips
etc.
>>8306802
writing with a pen makes on more careful in ones writing, on average. There is research on it which shows pen and paper essays by students acheive higher scores than typed ones. Some author or other attributed Hemmmmmingway's style to his habit of drafting on a typewriter.
Is it as good as they say?
>>8306728
no mate it wasn't good at all
loads of people died and that.
It's good, but most retards read it thinking it's just good vs evil and miss the point.
You gotta read the prologue in post ww1 Germany and the epilogue with Russia to really get the themes.
Essential Dada lit?
Tzara, Le coeur à gaz
Which screenwriters should I study?
Simpsons season 15 to present
DAN HARMONNNNNNNNN!!
Has anyone here read this book yet? I was thinking of this being my next read but I don't know if it's worth buying. I'm a huge fan of The Mountain Goats but I'm not sure how good Darnielle's writing would be from a storytelling standpoint.
>Wolf in White Van tells the story of Sean Phillips, a reclusive game designer
bye!
>>8306642
borrow it from the library if you're unsure
personally i liked it; it has a lot of the motifs darnielle employs in his songwriting (loneliness, mysticism, magical realism, fantasy, subcultures) and coherently places them into the context of a longer, sustained narrative
>>8306642
>Love Mountain Goats
>Favourite album is Zipolote Machine
>Literally thousands of listens in my last.fm
>Download his book
>wew mate
I think the music is as far as I'll go with Darnielle. Even his twitter feed reveals his politics stopped at first-year college levels.
not dense enough, not crazy enough
give me something in similar vein to GR or Illuminatus! from further down the rabbit hole
Have you already read Ulysses and Finnegans Wake?
>>8306596
you're way off track - but yes i've read both. undoubtedly dense but not what i'm looking for
i'm looking for fringe politics, historical revisionism, and mysticism/spirituality IE something to open my third eye
there's a guy on this board who wrote a book that is supposed to be pretty good
I think it's on Amazon for free, he only sold 2 so far
Whats the lit opinion on Kenzaburo ?
Did having a disabled son ruin his writing and why is the answer yes ?
>>8306554
Why do you think he ruined it? What do you think is all that different between his writing before his son and after?
>>8306561
Almost everything before was about world war 2; and he produced great stuff like "Nip the buds, shoot the kids". Afterwards it was just angst about having a retarded child, the quality completely declined.
Also him being an edgelord by writing a book were a character's wife gives birth to a disabled child and he tries to kill it multiple times before pussying out.
>>8306576
>he produced great stuff like "Nip the buds, shoot the kids"
Great.
His stuff about being a punk/rebel is also great.
The guy can write.
