Hey, /lit/.

What book should I get for my Spanish speaking gf? She likes Julio Cortázar and Gabriel García Márquez if that helps.

I'm about halfway through this book. I'm really liking it and it might become one of my favorites, but there is a certain element i'm unclear on.

At the beginning of the book the narrator says that Rodya is afraid of talking to his landlady, but later on the same narrator describes the landlady as shy and not prone to conversation.

If this were first person it could be easily chalked up to an unreliable narrator, but since it is in third person it becomes much more complicated. Should I ignore it and move on? Are there more inconsistencies? Does it have something to do with the Russian language? Is it simply a mistake?

Anyways Crime and Punishment thread

Person B is shy and not prone to conversation

Person A is afraid to talk to person B

No contradiction detected

Person A does not necessarily know person B is shy and not prone to conversation, nor does it say person B does not engage in any conversation at all
>>

I'm not seeing a contradiction here

What does /lit/ think of Joseph Campbell?
Are his books, Power of Myth and Hero With a Thousand Faces, worth the read?

What are the books really about?
30 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
A lot of people like to dis him, but I have found his works useful for understanding archetypes and story-structure.
>>
I love him. lit tends to be nihilistic, so I'm sure people don't like him on this board. However, his books really stood out to me, spiritually?

Why do you guys have trouble acknowledging that there is no objective high and low brow division and that taste is arbitrary?

Is it because you cling to your media consumption as the only means of distinguishing yourself?

High art, is usually distinguished by rarity, if anyone can do something its not that special, this also does not necessarily mean that anything one of a kind if great, or that everything difficult is great, but rarity and difficulty (inventiveness, novelty, genius, style, artistry, creativity, passion, depth) usually contribute to the effect of being in awe of a work.

Yes, anyone can like anything and potentially receive joy and value from it, for instance, an ant might think the particular leaf it is eating is the most important thing to ever exist in the world

Not necessarily anything to do with Punk music or aesthetic but any books that are aggressively iconclastic and anti-social.

What are some female authors that you say have literary merit? I don't like the meme that women don't contribute anything worthwhile to lit, as I would disagree from some authors I have read, and so I'm curious if anyone else is favorable of any woman author?

I just started The Bell Jar, and it is simple, but it's got wit and intuition that I am falling in love with so far. But, some of female authors that I have read and liked a lot are Ursula K Leguin and Anna Kavan.

Seriously, how can anyone even compete? and I mean ANYONE, not just writers.
Joyce is fucking ridiculous, is absurd, his power level goes beyond everyone and everything.
Im not able of articulate how blown away I got after The Sirens and everything that goes after.
He literally went beyond music and thats just one little part of the book.
And then he goes and drops Finnegans Wake like if it wasnt enough with this.
Is Joyce the ultimate genius? the endgame of humanity, consciousness and being?
Ulysses and Finnegans Wake are what the internet was supposed to be but failed.
They are a protean mirror to the self, everything beyond and all the shapes time can give to it.
How do you think being inside Joyce's head was like?
