What literature does /lit display on their coffee table?
>>8942220
Underneath the surface of my glass surface I have sprawled out the pages of Schopenhauer's 'On Women', so they make out the entire surface of the table. Good way to redpill your friends
>>8942220
None because I don't read for your approval.
>>8942220

"If you can't make a friend, be your own worst enemy."

"If you can't handle me at my worst you don't deserve me at my best."
-Ernest Hemingway
Why does anyone take this dipshit seriously?
>and then the bell tolled for Robert Jordan
Fucking mediocre.
So wait, what was this guys solution in Infinite Jest again? Just be sincere? Just b urself?
it was "just k yself"
>>8941913
is that the real thing?
being woke af makes you sad af
Tell me anon, you like memes? Why then haven't you read the meme to end all memes? Women and memes.
>>8941830
>Why then haven't you read the meme to end all memes? Women and memes.
because the author deliberately keeps it out of print because he thinks its shit
same reason as everyone else who isn't an idiot 4channer
>>8942004
that's not true. it's back in print this summer. it's been printed more times than some of his other work. nice try though.
>>8941830
>women
uhm no thanks lol
Why don't you have a set of Penguin Classics Hardcovers, with their foil-stamped linen cases and ribbon markers?
bangs knows what's up.
>>8941730
because they look gay as fuck.
What does /lit/ think of Robert Frost?
One of the finest poets since Shakespeare.
Unreadable.
>>8941701
Along with whitman, great
Is there really such a thing as "deep" "existential" problems or do they all just come from word games that edgy teens play when they cant get laid because they want their problems to seem important and complicated??? I thought I was going through a deep existential crisis, but then I just got laid and now everything is basically fine. Is this natural? Is literature fundamentally just a bunch of whiny autists crying about how they cant get laid?
>>8941507
The real problem arises when you're getting laid regularly and with different chicks but still don't feel the anxiety settling.
>>8941507
>is the world more complicated than 'it's nice to put your dick in a girl'?
Not sure desu
I think there are more problems that what you describe.
How about the fact that there is always someone who's naturally better, better off than you, and then shit happens to you and not to them.
WHERE DO I START?
>>8941490
You don't
I've only ever read Ham On Rye and found it very disappointing. Post Office is meant to be his best, though.
Read "Women" it's a great book if you're into really brutal descriptions on how your parents got down.
Which of these should I read next?
>Crime and Punishment
>The Idiot
>David Copperfield
>The Sun Also Rises
>Dubliners
Crime and Punishment no doubt
Dubliners of course
No question, The sun also rises.
Share your editing tips and hints. Are you a disciple of Strunk? Do you murder your darlings as per Arthur Quiller-Couch's advice, or do you permit them to live? Are you sunk in the depths of a gruelling edit at the moment? Post in here.
Sometimes I really struggle with editing. I like to write things quickly, which gives them a great flow, but when I come back to them with a different mindset I sometimes find that in editing I lose what was great about the original piece.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any tips?
>>8941755
I kind of just discount the flow of the original draft because it's so rough in retrospect. All bets are off. I find that the original draft is immediately improved by even the slightest change like the inclusion of a comma or simplification of a word.
>>8941393
>cut as many adverbs as humanly possible
>ensure that 3 and 4 word sentences are only used for dramatic effect
>make everything more subtle, even the things you think are fine
>ctrl + f all words (excluding articles, pronouns, etc.), and make sure that each repetition is either intentional or unavoidable
>trim down excess description, beginnings & ends of dialog
>read the piece for theme & story structure, and make sure that no thematic or structural elements are poorly-done or missing
>make sure that the wordcount has decreased by at least 5%
>make sure that no chapter or section titles are obvious spoilers; same with foreshadowing
>misc. grammar corrections
That's about it.
know you guys will have something. i need a word or phrase that's meaning relates, in literature, to the time right before someone is drowned or executed. people have a final meal. last words. what else happens before people are killed?
>>8941336
begging for salvation
>>8941336
The easy example that comes immediately to mind is Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. The phenomenon is what people call "life passing before my eyes" and the technical term is "life review." It is not to be confused with near death experience, they are not the same thing. Many dissidents and prisoners subjected to mock executions they thought were real report experiencing the life review phenomenon.
>>8941670
is near death experience when people think theyre floating up from their bodies. this is a very interesting phenom you have up there...
What did Dorian Gray blackmail Alan Campbell with?
Would it be the obvious; their homosexual relationship?
>>8941329
His boipussy
>>8941329
I wouldn't say it was their affair desu, Dorian would have to compromise himself in the letter which is not very logical
>>8941764
Dorian absolutely didn't care for his reputation though
Hey, I'm thinking of translating The Hobbit in Sindarin
It originally was written by Bilbo in Westron, but since Westron is such an obscure language that's been almost entirely transformed into english by Tolkien, I think that Sindarin is pretty much my only alternative with Quenya (but quenya is a bit unnecessary for such a book)
You could image that Bilbo, while he was staying in Rivendell told his story a good amount of times and it ended up being written down in Sindarin by someone else or himself.
I'd really like to own a book in Sindarin and think that it could probably interest a lot of people too even if they don't speak elvish, it'd be interesting just for the novelty of it
Tell me what you think of it!
(Pic related is the first parapraph of the book, except that it's not Sindarin but english written in Tengwar c': )
>>8941254
I think you're wasting your time
>>8941254
This is some next level fedora
>>8941256

So /lit/. What's your view on Materialism? Specifically Historical Materialism?
>>8941046
An ok idea but not conclusive. Sheds some light on historical processes, but to say economics is the be all and end all is misguided. See Max Weber for evidence that economics can be determined by culture as well.
>inb4 but economics influenced the Protestant Reformation
chicken and egg. They influence each other.
>>8941046
hogwash
marx correctly classified the major conflict of civilization as urban vs rural
though
It's scary how much of Marx's writings are still relevant today.
With the middle class now dissapearing and wealth inequality increasing, one does notice people are being more and more divided between haves and have-nots.
