Start with his poetry probably. I am no expert, but I loved Drowning in Water, Burning in Flame. He has tons of poetry, so I really don't know where his real gems are.
His fiction is great, but it really helps to have some understanding of his sense of humor and outlook before starting some of them. A sympathy for addiction and mental illness might help too ;)
