Greetings /k/. I am looking to get into bladesmithing, and was hoping to get some advice and information from the Bladesmiths of /k/. Sort of the basics, where to start, what tools will I need, how much smithing should I do before I even attempt a knife, etc. Also, any recommended books on the subject of Bladesmithing would be wonderful.

urgh. where to start?

bladesmiths' forum (the old Don Fogg Knives forum renamed), britishblades forum are your two best first sources to read.
book-wise, "Complete Bladesmith" by Jim Hrisoulas is your bible.

my personal advice, start with stock removal. learn to grind cleanly, and then go to forging afterward. grinding needs to be done after forging and heat-treat anyway, (just less of it), so its the skill which has more say on how the resulting finish is. The best-forged blade, ground with a shitty anglegrinder is going to look shit, whatever you do. The best forged blade, then ground with a good finish, will always look better.

Also, learning to heat-treat on a stock removed blank is much easier, I find, than on a forged blade - less irregularities and risk of breakages, in a homogeneous blade that's been ground, than one forged, makes it easier at first.

Dont even bother with swords till you've done a fucktonne of research. its like saying you want to make an indycar when you've never driven a go-cart.

If you want an equipment list of what I use, I'll see what I can put together.
>>
Equipment:

saw. a good 12" hacksaw will do for most blade working. Try various blades, see what works for you. Personally, I like Bhaco 24tpi bimetallic blades for cutting EN45 spec steel, and Eclipse 24TPI HSS blades for cutting O1 spec steel.

Files. I like Grobet-Vallorbe gunsmiths' files, they're durable, and tough, but slightly more pricey. Bahco are ok. Nicholson are ok in the US. Avoid no-name files, they're a false economy usually. (though I have one indian-made file that's served me for years. Mill files are good for their curved edge, but warding files in bastard adn 2nd cut are essential.

Measuring kit. vernier calipers are nice, but a set of friction or screw calipers will do - use them for eyeballing up midlines and fullers etc to be sure they're in place. Scriber, steel rule, and marker pens for the same reasons. For anything that's not straight lines, I use french curves, or for big stuff, ship curves. they'll let you draw really elegant, smoothly arching curves that look good. A long springy ruler is good for the same purpose, with one end clamped. dont use your good ruler for that, though.

emery paper on blocks are good for hand -working surfaces before hones. 120, 180, 240, 300, 400, 600, 800, 1200 grit are good. Also Al-Ox paper in 80, 120, 180 and 240 grit.

whetstones and hones for hand-finishing. I like belgian ones, but welsh and german hones are ok. And then you get the japanese water stones, but theyre silly money unless you're making grorious nippon katanas...

ctd.

Grinders.
sooner or later, you're going to need sparks to fly.

your cheapest option is a little bench grinder, usually used in workshops to remove burrs etc. really not a viable option unless you're only making prison shivs.

Belt sanders are you more likely choice. fabric-backed sandpaper (well, technically, Al/Ox or ceramic) belt attached to a motor. quality is down to power, width and length.

more power means less likely to bog. wider belt means easier to get even surfaces. longer belts wear out slower. 1 inch belts are found on tinny little harbour freight grinders that are useless for anything more than a 2-3 inch blade. 2 inch wide belts are far more use. 6 foot length is good, though you can get 3 foot length belts too.

a good grinder should have plenty of power, I use a 2hp motor, and I've stalled that once. anything less than 1hp is just a waste of time.

you will want to look at the face it grinds on - you get flat panels, called platen, and you get round wheels, called contact wheels, in different radii. flat platens will do flat and convex surfaces, contact wheels will do concave, which is needed for hollow-grinds on blades and razors.

Shop accordingly. but be aware that even a home-made grinder will not be cheap. A burr king or bader grinder will cost you a 4-figure pricetag.

For belts, I would suggest avoiding red al-Ox, and instead shop for ceramic belts from 3M or Sait. for fine finishes, 3M Trizact belts are superb, but they're not cheap - but worth it for very fine finishes if you're not doing hand-finishing.

Because tank fags get one, us jetfags should get one, so I'm going to start a weekly jet fighter based general thread, which will be known as /JHG/.

In these threads you may talk about current developments and general knowledge about jet fighters. Please keep it civil; slavaboos, chinkaboos, ameriboos and eurotrash please keep your dick waving to a minimum and just talk about jet aircraft.

Starting off I'll talk about the latest iteration of F-15:
> Saudis put billions of $ into defense contract
>Do we want F-35s or upgraded F-15s?
>We want upgraded F-15s!

What do we get? We get the F-15SA. This iteration brings the F-15 to 4++ standard:
>AN/APG-63(V3) AESA
>BAE Digital Electronic Warfare System
>Sniper XR with Boeing Tiger Eyes A/A IRST capability
>JHMCS
>Increased payload
>Touchscreen displays in cockpit
>HUD projected directly onto canopy

DEWS alone makes this a force to be reckoned with. When used in conjunction with the AESA radar, it will apparently show engagement range information of anything searching/spiking the eagle. Also allows 50% more expendable chaff and flares to be carried due to new carriage positions in the tail. The new space comes as a result of the implementation of a fly by wire control system, also enhancing the aircraft's control and maneuverability. It also allows enemy radar to be jammed without affecting it's own radar and RWR (though I don't think this was ever an issue).

In my personal opinion, it's a real shame the USAF doesn't buy some of these.

Hey /k/, hopefully this falls under the subject of camoflauge and gear...

Looking at pic related, do you guys know what harness he is wearing? The one round his shoulders and crotch? I remember it being called a SABO or something but google doesnt help me.

And also, what is that he wears under his shirt? It looks like a thermal base layer but fuck wearing that in a jungle, does anyone know what it is?

And last question, can anyone source these two so i can buy them? I need them both for... Reasons.
Im depending on you /k/, dont let me down. Will be bumping with /k/ shit. Thanks.

BB's gear is a mix of different things.

There's parachutist harness going around him (pic quite related), something that looks vaguely like M1956 LCE's belt + obvious mag pouches, canteen pouch and buttpack.

He has this black full-body suit underneath his camos. Dunno if that's based on anything in reality.

Howdy, /k/.

Every now and again (as in, every 6 months or so when I get bored) I make a thread about some reloading topic of some importance which many people may or may not be familiar with, but which I think is important.

Last time I did a nice walk through on bullet casting, so I thought I'd go over it again, and maybe discuss some of the finer points if anyone has any questions or input.

Please note that this may not be a totally exhaustive guide, and my camera skills and camera are lacking- also, any pictures were taken in a fairly dark garage using camera flash under fluorescent lighting, so forgive any difficult to see images.

I'm a big dillon fanboy, but I also have a soft spot for Lee, so you won't hear any reloading gear elitism out of me.

The subject today is a new mold to me, and the reason I made this thread. The mold is a design based on the Lyman 452374, a bullet which is generally used to approximate a "ball" load in .45 ACP. This is a Mihec mold, made in Slovenia.

Mihec makes probably the highest quality semi-custom molds out there (the only way you'd get much higher quality would be a full custom job tailored to a specific gun). His particular claim to fame is brass "hollow point" molds, and I am fortunate to have acquired many of them.

They're very excellent tools, and I have yet to find a maker who can match his consistent quality and also do his many unusual designs.
>>

3MB, 3264x1836px
>>23364913

Here is a comparison of a "hollowpoint" mold and a regular one.

There are several ways to make hollowpoint molds.

Mihec's designs are the most efficient and easiest to use. They are referred to as "cramer" hollowpoint molds, after the long-defunct cramer company that originally made this style.

With a cramer mold, the "pins" ride on sliding bars which support and form the bullet's nose/meplat. In this case, the meplat (flat portion that impacts the target) is replaced with a hollow point, of course.

These pins slide freely back and forth and are retained by c-clips.
>>
File: 20141025_194555.jpg (2MB, 3264x1836px) Image search: [Google]
20141025_194555.jpg
2MB, 3264x1836px
>>23364961

A bit of a better picture that shows how they interface with the mold. This mold is a 2 cavity 312440, which is an old Ideal/Lyman design which is optimized for the ,30-30. Originally it had a BIG frontal section (the meplat) but that has been replaced with a big honking hollowpoint in this case instead.

Other hollowpoint styles include the "RG" system used by Night Owl molds, which involve sliding bars on a "track" that rides under the mold blocks, and the venerable single pin system, which involves nothing more than a pin which is manually inserted into a mold block which has had a hole drilled through it. Neither method is as fast as the cramer method. I believe the single pin is also a bit harder to use (harder to keep the pin at the appropriate temperature in my experience) and the RG system tends to "tear" hollowpoints and ruin bullets- it also lacks the enviable feature of the cramer system in that it ejects bullets more forcefully if they stick.

So, I just did a bit of math, and found this out.
It costs around $40,000 on average to send a kid through 4 years of college. That's a good chunk of change, and basically unachievable if you're from a poor family. Even if you're decently well off, you'll be paying student loan debt off for years. Really, the only people who can get through college unscathed are rich kids.
An F-35 fighter jet costs $125,000,000 per unit. The government plans to buy 1,700 of them.
For the cost of a single F-35 fighter you could give more than 3,000 kids a full ride through college. If you were to keep the A-10s in the inventory and shave 300 F-35s off the final order, that money could put more than 860,000 kids through college.
I'm not talking about cancelling the whole order of 1,700 new figher jets, I'm talking about trimming that number down in favor of a more cost-effective and proven CAS airframe and sending a small city's worth of kids to school.
If you requisitioned the funds of 300 fighter jet purchases for use in education you'd be helping hundreds of thousands of people shatter a glass ceiling that's been holding back a huge segment of the population, and that's just in per-unit cost. That's not even getting into the annual operating and maintenance costs of the things. Doing this could go a long way towards straightening out the whole income gap thing, but nah, we need a preponderance of cool fighter jets.
Well, at least we have our priorities straight.
Also, goddamn, this is pretty OWS-tier.
