I'm slowly building my Mossberg 835 into a retarded 590a1. When I got it, the barrel factory vent rib barrel was chopped a little short, it had a Mossberg factory PG on it, and it was spray painted black. Literally someone just sprayed the whole thing black with no disassembly or taping or anything.
I removed the finish and painted the receiver and mag tube in automotive epoxy paint. It looks like shit and I may have it cerakoted some day.
I've got a 26" vent rib barrel for hunting and an 18" heavy barrel from a 590a1 for defensive use. I've got a tritium front bead on it's way from Brownell's. The stock and forend are Hogue.
Just installed an IWC QD sling mount in the stock today at work. I have a GG&G QD front sling mount on it's way as well.

Other than the shitty anology, there is nothing wrong with DI. It can be just as reliable as any other setup as long as the recoil spring is strong enough to push through the carbon buildup.

Why hasn't the M2 been replaced?
There's been two replacement programs that highlighted the shortcomings of the design, but both times nothing was adopted because the new US designs were shit (either low fire rate or reliability issues).
Countries like Russia have replaced their M2 equivalents twice and now field HMGs that are more reliable, half the weight, much cheaper and have low enough recoil that they are deployed at GPMGs.
I am aware that the US has recently started a modification program that will reduce weight and add a QCB, but it's still much heavier, more complicated and less adaptable than competing designs.
So, tl;dr: When will the US be able to field a worthwhile replacement for the M2?
Are they unable to design anything better, or are they just trying to hold on to their memories?

Pretty much, the M2 is literally the pinnacle of HMG designs for our time
People don't realize how advanced Browning was, but he designed striker fired pistols at least half a century before anyone else considered it
