So how come Libya fucked up the war against Chad?
>inb4 France
French support was minimal
They feared the Chad Warrior
>trick Libyan into occupying a harsh, remote and unhospitable that they're familiar with
>proceed to btfo them
The French provided air superiority. The Chad infantry had anti-tank missiles and knew the terrain.
So was the ussr basically just the EU, but with Russia being the Germany of it? How much autonomy did the individual countries have with in it?
>>3186346
Not really because The Ussr was a federal state like the US
>>3186346
no, the satellite states had practically no autonomy, to the point where revolts were violently repressed by military sent by the ussr. the modern eu countries outside of germany are fully autonomous and only comply to eu guidelines out of free will, not out of forced compliance.

ITT: aesthetic historical weapons
I worked for health/welfare departments as an IT goon, and now I own my own business in underground services.
I still run into government workers a lot, but they remind of lazy/useless government is today.
I had a job working for mental health, and I literally sat on my ass with 6 coworkers and a supervisor; and we just paid a contractor to do 100% of the work.
We were not lowly paid employees, with about 120k salary + benefits.
This seems to be more common now, than 100 years ago with the rise of IT, finance departments who don't really provide a service or product.
Lots of private companies cut back there HR departments by about 95%, 20 years ago; but government HR is bigger than ever...
Is government in a bubble, and are these government "administration" jobs just a way of dealing out favors and controlling people to an extent?
I have no desire to go back, I will gladly work my 10 hours a day literally digging and sucking shit, and make my 200k a year.

How does it feel that you will never walk around, see the countryside and cities, the people of medieval western europe, their lives and societies?
feels bad, I used to get extremely depressed over this in my teens, but when people would ask my why im sad i couldnt really say anything cause they would think i was weird or something
Pretty good since I won't be burned at the stake for using my brains in a critical manner or shit my innards out due to numerous diseases that no one can do anything about.
joke's on you, OP. i'm a graduate student in an American university. i get to embody medieval life better than anyone else now living.
Have walls historically been better at keeping people out or people in?
>>3184599
Yes
>>3184599
Keeping people out. Invasion is harder than an escape.
>>3184599
Walls are used to:
1) force an opponent to meet your army on your terms. Siege warfare is time consuming in all cases and risky unless you're assured victory. Even if that victory comes, you pay with blood and important supplies that cannot be replaced. If the enemy commits to such an act, their mobility is limited and you can plan freely to destroy them.
2) prevent raids. A small group of fighters can do considerable damage to the unprepared. A wall helps mitigate the speed at which a raider can affect this damage. Aurelians walls are a good example of them. The Rhine or Danube can be crossed, but how can 1000 men loot a fortress of 10,000 behind a sturdy wall?
3)reduce enemy logistics. An invading force will, of course, overcome any obstacle to achieve their wargoal unless resisted. A wall does not resist, but rather restrict. Hadrians wall is a good example. It restricted movement from the north, so Picts couldn't do more than small raids. Getting over a wall is no problem, until you need to get the horse, it's food, and the supplies it's carrying over before someone raises an alarm.
4) psychological warfare. Everyone knows what a wall is, only a few can build a mighty wall. This alone is enough to dissuade attack. The theodosian walls of Constantinople were impossible to breach partly because no one had ever done so in 1000 years. It took the largest cannon ever built to do so, after every other part of the empire collapsed. Walls such as these are legendary to the point where the legend has real effect on morale.

Why did the U.S. half-ass Reconstruction and let the "Lost Cause" autism persist for so long?
>>3183892
Lincoln's assassination.
There weren't really any other US politicians either brave (or stupid) enough to achieve cooperation like Lincoln was willing to do. Even though the CSA lost the war, it did not remove the southern aristocratic lifestyle that had been engrained in southerners since the 1660s. Lincoln was adamant about working together to rebuild the nation, to forgive and move forward. Well, his ass became grass and no one stepped up to carry the torch. Grant became maybe the worst president we ever had, the south immediately enacted Jim Crow laws and the nation stayed separated, not in terms of nations but in idealism.
The only way we were gonna be able to unite the nation was through cooperation and healing. In the end, the south kept fucking blacks and the north continued to not give a fuck.
