There weren't really any other US politicians either brave (or stupid) enough to achieve cooperation like Lincoln was willing to do. Even though the CSA lost the war, it did not remove the southern aristocratic lifestyle that had been engrained in southerners since the 1660s. Lincoln was adamant about working together to rebuild the nation, to forgive and move forward. Well, his ass became grass and no one stepped up to carry the torch. Grant became maybe the worst president we ever had, the south immediately enacted Jim Crow laws and the nation stayed separated, not in terms of nations but in idealism.

The only way we were gonna be able to unite the nation was through cooperation and healing. In the end, the south kept fucking blacks and the north continued to not give a fuck.

Because the unfortunate reality of reconciliation means you have to allow the southerners back into the government, and they made it Job 1 to undermine and curtail reconstruction. Eventually they forced national politics to a point of crisis, then agreed to end the crisis in exchange for the withdrawl of federal troops. Check out the compromise of 1877, that was the final nail. Grant's crappy presidency and a currency crisis also played a role. It was a bunch of stuff but essentially nobody was prepared to do what it took to keep reconstruction going. It would have required a lot more hostility toward southerners which would have only delayed or prevented them from being reconciled back into the union. Maybe more military action. I guess it's up to you to decide if the trade off was worth it.

Because during Reconstruction blacks were given full political rights while a lot of white southerners were initially disenfranchised through 1872. It's believed blacks didn't govern in ways the whites liked and the KKK was formed to terrorize them into not voting so less and less Republicans got elected especially after the Amnesty Act of 1872 was passed. And of course as someone mentioned already there was the compromise of 1877 that ended Reconstruction cause the election of 1876 was so heavily disputed and the South instituted the Jim Crow laws that blacks agreed to initially in the Atlanta Compromise.
