Why is american government so big?

I worked for health/welfare departments as an IT goon, and now I own my own business in underground services.

I still run into government workers a lot, but they remind of lazy/useless government is today.

I had a job working for mental health, and I literally sat on my ass with 6 coworkers and a supervisor; and we just paid a contractor to do 100% of the work.

We were not lowly paid employees, with about 120k salary + benefits.

This seems to be more common now, than 100 years ago with the rise of IT, finance departments who don't really provide a service or product.

Lots of private companies cut back there HR departments by about 95%, 20 years ago; but government HR is bigger than ever...

Is government in a bubble, and are these government "administration" jobs just a way of dealing out favors and controlling people to an extent?

I have no desire to go back, I will gladly work my 10 hours a day literally digging and sucking shit, and make my 200k a year.
