france was in ruins when he rose to power so it was just a matter of time until a civil war breaked out and needless to say it would probably rage for years without ever reaching any kind of consensus among all the parts, throwing france to a even worse place and possible making them just another fail state

this was avoided when this guy rose to power; not only he was finally able to bring peace and cohesion to its people (mending the wounds caused by reign of terror, accepting freedom of religion once again and being more laid back in terms of general governance once he had complete power)

needless to say that without him the very young idea of an european state without monarchs would have died before having any kind of weight... even if he later on crowned himself emperor (whether by self ambition or in order to try to appease the european royal houses while trying to show he "was one of them")

>How did vikings look like?
Pale skinned, light complexions, generally tall as most Northern Europeans are compared to Celtic and other Indo-Europeans in Europe.
>How big they actually were?
Probably the same size and height in general as their Germanic predecessors like the Goths, Vandals, and so on that fought the Romans centuries before.
>>
>>424052
According to the middle eastern explorere Ahmad Ibn Fadlan they were "As tall as Date trees"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan

>The Rūs appear as traders who set up shop on the river banks nearby the Bolğar camp. They are described as having bodies tall as (date) palm-trees, with blond hair and ruddy skin. They are tattooed from "fingernails to neck" with dark blue or dark green "tree patterns" and other "figures" and that all men are armed with an axe, sword and long knife.

Hear he is referring to Varangian conquerors in Russia from Scandinavia

Even if Christianity was true (Which it isn't, and Im able to prove it) beyond a shadow of a doubt), there is no way to know if any of it is true because its all based on hearsay from at most a handful of witnesses. We can't even know for a fact if Jesus even said anything that he did in the NT for that reason.

When you are ready for the truth, you should listen to the lectures of Rabbi Toviah Singer, on youtube.

Was the American civil war about freeing the slaves or were other motives behind it?
128 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
it wasn't so much that the north was trying to free the slaves as it was the south breaking away because they feared the federal government would end slavery, and thus cripple their economy. the war was then fought to end the rebellion, and the slaves were freed in the process
>>
oh good its this thread again

It was about states rights...
To own people as property.
Because that's what built the Southern economy

who /absurdism/ here?

>>
>tfw my whole life is absurdist
>>
Imo absurdism makes sense only if you're incapable of seeing reality outside of western forms of rationality.

If you believe that only things understandable by dualistic constructs or human forms of perception are real/exist of course you will find reality to be absurd, however this assumes that human conceptualization/perception is the only way the universe can be experienced. Basically I find absurdism to be short-sighted.
>>
>>421720
While this is true I find it pretty hard to fault a philosophy for not going beyond what humans can perceive. Any philosophy that does this is really more guessing than anything because we cannot percieve in any way but the human way.

Even if USA didn't have any nuclear weapons, would imperial Japan had any chances winning WW2?

I've kinda gotten an impression that they never stood a chance. They were low on resources and slowly losing battles around the empire.

>I've kinda gotten an impression that they never stood a chance. They were low on resources and slowly losing battles around the empire.

Yes, the truth is that despite their impressive military, navy, etc... they lacked in resources, logistics, and industrial output.

No country can hold out against a global war effort or coalition, with industrial capabilities and manpower beyond their own.

The Napoleonic Wars and WWI proved this, and WWII was simply a continuation of this theme... though there were other factors in each individual conflict.

I always found it more impressive these states managed to last as long as they did against such overwhelming odds, and its to their credit.

Japan's intention was never to "win ww2," by which I assume you mean the war in the Pacific.

Japan's goal was to disable the American Pacific fleet in one strategic attack while shocking the American population into backing down from the sanctions.

The Japanese figured that even in worse case scenario, they would have 4-5 years until the US could rebuild it's fleet strong enough for a war. By that point Japan was planning on getting a peace agreement as they assumed they would have won the war in China by that point.

As it happens, the Japanese completely misread the situation, failed to even put a real dent in the Pacific fleet, and ended up with a very, very pissed off United States bombing and blockading the shit out of them.

tl;dr
Japan's Goal: Survive
>>
I don't mean to sound harsh but how is that even a question.

The bombs didn't come out of nowhere during an evenly matched conflict that could go either way, some sort of a magical silver bullet, a deus ex machina resolution or whatever.

They came at the time where the allies, chiefly the Americans, had free reign of the Pacific.

The Japanese navy had a single one (1, less than two) capital ship remaining by mid-1945. American planes flew over the home islands with nigh impunity.

Basically the only obstacle the Japanese could mount was a last gasp, probably rather suicidal, last stand of the remnants of their forces on their home islands.

That is not having a chance of winning. That is not even having a potential chance of winning. That is not even possessing a minuscule chance of a possibility of perhaps entertaining the thought of doing anything other than losing.

tl'dr - no

Were those recordings true?

I've heard plenty of times that Hoover was just paranoid as fuck, is there any validity to this?

Not trolling, honest to God(gods/whateverthefuck) wonder what you think /his/.

I know that he was so controversial that he could've basically been killed by anybody, but do you think Hoover fucked with him or was he really fucking some srs hot poon on the side?

Personally, I think that he was having an affair (or more), but that it was blown the fuck apart by a crazy person all over the place and that if he tried to be less crazy he would have been... seen as less crazy.

Dated a girl who's granddad was in the FBI; oddly enough he specialized in surveillance but this was years after King. Had pictures with Hoover in his office.

Anyways, the subject came up once and he basically said yeah the FBI knew all sorts of shit about him and basically the most damning was that he loved the white womens. I mean he really loved the white womens.
>>
>>419686
MLK only became a threat to the government when he came out against the Vietnam War and started talking about poverty in general, not just the black variety. That's when the establishment turned against him and started attacking him for being too radical. It's no coincidence that he was assassinated while leading and organizing the "Poor People's Campaign."

Same thing with Malcolm X being assassinated after he started calling for racial harmony.

How the fuck did they do it?

No seriously, how did they pull it off? I understand that the entire country had been basically blown to shit, but even then how did the guys in charge manage to completely rewrite history and do everything they did, turning 1953 into Oceania's Year Zero? It really is quite a feat in this modern age.

That doesn't really explain how they managed to brainwash 25 million people into believing the father is the eternal leader even in death and that his son was born under a double rainbow. Also that they can blow up tanks by punching them.
>>
>>419290
implying majority of people are brainwashed.

most are repressed by the military, thats why many try to escape every year.
dont get me wrong I'm sure a very large portion are indoctrinated to a point nearing brainwashing but it would be nearly impossible to fully achieve this across an entire population.

Pick another religion you do not believe in and disprove it. Simple enough.

Some rules:
>No just saying they are wrong because we are right.
>Use the most accurate, formal logic you can, avoid fallacies.
>Explain why that argument could not be used on your own belief.

Religions cannot be disproven. They are not falsifiable.

That's what makes them suck.

The Messiah will do many things.
>The whole world will worship the One God of Israel. Isaiah 2:11-17, Isaiah 40:5, Zephaniah 3:9
Currently does not happen.
>Knowledge of God will fill the world. Isaiah 11:9, 45:23, 66:23, Jeremiah 31:33, Zechariah 3:9, 8:23, 14:9,16, Ezekiel 38:23, Psalm 86:9
This means irrefutable evidence. Knowledge, not faith.
>All Israelites will be returned to their homeland Isaiah 11:12, 27:12-13, Ezekiel 11:17, 36:24, Deuteronomy 30:3
I am still in America.
>The Jewish people will experience eternal joy and gladness. Isaiah 51:11
Holocaust? Inquisition? Progroms?
>Nations will recognize the wrongs they did to Israel. Isaiah 52:13-53:5
Holocaust deniers
>The peoples of the world will turn to the Jews for spiritual guidance. Zechariah 8:23
Spiritual, not monetary.
>Weapons of war will be destroyed. Ezekiel 39:9
Not destroyed by nuclear weapons.
>All of the dead will rise again Isaiah 26:19
You claim one dude, I want them all.
>A person’s genealogical/tribal membership are transmitted exclusively through one’s physical father. Numbers 1:18, Jeremiah 33:17
Jesus whose alleged sketchy genealogy is maternal cannot possibly be a descendent of the tribe of Judah
>Third Temple will be rebuilt. Micah 4:1, Ezekiel 40-42, Isaiah 2:2-3, Malachi 3:4, Zechariah 14:20-21,
Not a person, but a physical building.
>World Peace: Isaiah 2:4, 11:6, 60:18 Micah 4:1-4, Hosea 2:20
Open a newspaper lately?
>Christianity claims that Jesus "Fulfilled the law"
According to Deut 13:2-7, this makes Jesus a false prophet.
>All Jews will embrace Torah observance. Ezekiel 37:24, Deuteronomy 30:8-10, Jeremiah 31:32, Ezekiel 11:19-20, 36:26-27.
How many Jews are fully observant today?
>The Messiah can not be part God. Deut 6:4
Not explicitly Jesus, but the idea that the Messiah will be Godly is antithetical to Judaism.

>>
I love history but I don't have the patience or nerve to be a professor so it's otherwise pretty useless desu
>>
>>407656

I have a degree in history. Coming out of university the only options available were teacher's college or grad school. Since no school board gives a flying fuck about history there are few jobs for history teaching. You'll be better off teaching English and then weaving your way into history.

Grad school just means more debt, you come out with a better credential but job prospects remain slim. Becoming a full time professor takes years and since few professors retire at 65 you'll be in the pipe for a long ass time just waiting for an interview.

So whats the difference between Islam's Jesus and Christian's Jesus..?

Both faiths are similar story's of him.
99 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>393681
christianity holds that jesus was himself god/ a part of god/ the son of god and islam holds that he was a prophet with unique blessings
>>
>>393681
As far as I've heard, in Islam Jesus was simply seen as a "great prophet," the second greatest actually after Mohammed. Now, that brings up contradictions, as Jesus clearly said things that are incompatible with Islam, and I'm not currently aware how the Muslim intellectual community deals with this.
>>
>>393681
Islam prohibits people from worshipping anyone besides Allah. I'm not too sure here but I assume Isa is not a son of G-d but rather just a really cool guy.
