Can an averagely intelligent hard worker succeed in academic pursuits?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
With the proper resources, most of which can be found online or at a local university library, and a bit of dedication, you can learn a lot.

If you're serious, see the policies for non-university affiliated individuals for borrowing books. A lot of them will allow you to use their resources.

It gets a lot of shit here, but Reddit is actually a decent place to find and catalog large amounts of information on any given subject. Avoid the comment sections, and stick to subreddits dedicated to academic topics.

>Can an averagely intelligent hard worker succeed in academic pursuits?

No. Neither hard work nor intelligence are related to academic success. Publishing is.

Pretty sure both of those attributes correlate at least somewhat with publishing senpai

How to distinguish between REAL philosophy and mental wankery?

Mental wankery advances opinions you disagree with.

Foucault is often as full of shit as the rest of the post-structuralists; however, I find his ideas about skepticism and power interesting.

It's interesting to read his works, even when he plays dishonest rhetorical games, because of his ideas and style.

I haven't watched it, but Germany doesn't have any realistic means of knocking out the UK, let alone the U.S.

The only way they "win" WW2 is to knock out the Soviets, build up a huge fortress Europe, endure strategic bombing for a couple of years, and eventually sign a peace when it becomes clear they aren't going anywhere (and even this is a huge longshot)

In that time, the U.S. uses and deploys the atomic bomb, rendering large areas of Continental Europe baking, irradiated cinders.

Since this doesn't seem to be what the video is about, I'm guessing it's "not accurate at all".

>One could, of course, simply deny that reality has such an subjective part. And there are philosophers who deny it - Daniel Dennett, for one. Dennett refuses to concede that consciousness contains any intrinsically qualitative elements. As far as he is concerned, "qualia" are a philosophical myth.

>Such denialism leaves philosophers like Searle and Nagel incredulous. It seems willfully blind to the very essence of what it means to be conscious. Nagel has written, "The world just ISN'T the world as it appears to one highly abstracted point of view" - that is, the scientific point of view.

Scifags BTFO. How do you respond, /his/?
62 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I both agree and disagree.

It's pretty clear that empirical science has yielded results in the material world that are undeniable.

But at the same time, concluding that consciousness doesn't have any intrinsically qualitative elements seems like a very very naive thing to do.

Your quotes only indicate that two sides disagree with one another. Nobody is getting BTFO, those are just statements of positions on one of the openest questions in the world.
>>
>>426149
The contention that science cannot explain the intrinsic nature of reality just because it can describe it very well is a sound one

>why would a well documented civilization like rome not keep any record of such an expedition?
Isn't it widely agreed that the sources we have from Roman times, although numerous, are just a drop in the bucket. Most lost to the times?

>what incentive would they have had to sail westward into infinity?
Maybe the expedition was carried to America in a series of unfortunate/unforeseen events. Like a storm bringing the vessel way of course or some other happenstance. And if this was the case it is self explanatory that no record of any expedition would exist, since it would just be regarded as a another ship lost at sea.

So I was having a discussion with a friend and the topic of spears in medieval warfare came up.

My question is this: did plate armoured soldiers (knights/men at arms/ect) commonly utilize generic spears on foot? I almost always see them depicted either on horseback or using some other form of pole arm. Where there many who fought with shield+spear or just spear?

I am specifically interested in the 14th century, but answers for other time periods are also nice.

>>
Why have a spear when you can have a halberd which combines three weapons into one?
>>
>>424165

Where are you drawing the line between "spears" on one hand and "pikes" on the other?

Because pikes were fuck ass common.

As for the other question, about the shields? Once you had plate armor, shields almost disappeared. Two major reasons for that:

1) If you have plate, chances are, the guys you're fighting also have plate. You're going to need a weapon that can get through that shit, which usually means 2 handed to generate enough power.

2) Less marginal protection. If you're in plate, you're only really worried about weapons that can get through plate. Anything that can get through plate is also going to get through a wooden board, unless it's so thick and heavy that your arm will fall off trying to use it.
>>
>>424165
Pretty sure plate armor hadn't developed to the full one we know in 14th century yet. Also it was expensive as hell, naturally, so not every footman (if any at all) could use it.

At the start of the war France held the highest amount of military planes in service, at around 140.
UK was second with 120.
France already partially knew the advantages of air support because of their recent colonial conflicts.
But you really have to specify a period for me to give your a question a more specific answer.

More specific: who used their infant air force most effectively to support the war effort as a whole and which nation won the most air battles

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Boundary_Commission
TL;DR: The border just goes along the lines of the six counties. There is no particular reason for that retarded section that relates to modern history.
It is very likely that already existed as part of the boundary between two counties before partition.
I'm sure there is a historical reason for it, but almost certainly not one that relates to the 20th century conflict in Ireland
>>
>>421991
Well, we tried to settle on an agreement with the British on a basis of "economic, self-determination, ethnic considerations", but the Brits went back on their word and we'd have lost land in Donegal where a large Protestant population was rather than gaining land, so we just kinda said "nah fuck it just leave it like it is".

The border is incredibly porous, and almost led to direct conflict between Irish and British forces during the Troubles (there was a bridge the British intended to blow up to stop the IRA crossing it, but the Irish deployed the Army and claimed it was Republic territory).

Nobody even tries to police it now, it's just filled with back roads, and we have a Common Travel Area (kinda like a mini-Schengen) so it's not like it needs to have border checks.

Tatar thread!

>-How is relations between them and ruskis?
To answer that you have to remember that there are two well-known Tatar nations not that closely related to each other: Kazan Tatars and Crimean Tatars. Kazan Tatars, being an enclave in Russia, are generally okay with them but not exactly fully supportive, as far as I know.
Crimeans fucking despise Russians because only after Ukraine got independence they were actually allowed to come back, and Russians, especially ones who moved to Crimea after deportation, are generally afraid of them.
>-Are all of them muslim?
Not all of them, I guess, since they did live under communism but their native religion is indeed Islam. They're pretty cool, though.
>-Where did they come from?
Crimean Tatars are a mix of the whole bunch of local population that lived in Crimea before them and Turkic nomads.

Kazan Tatars I'm not too sure about. They aren't very related to mongols and I think they are partially descending from Volga Bulgars.
>-Are they bro tier?
I can't vouch for all of them but I like them. You've got to give props for living in the center of Russia and still being a relatively tight-knit community defending its cultural values. As far as religion goes, honestly, Russian Muslims are generally way nicer that Russian Russians, so to speak.

Crimean Tatars are cool too, they just want their home back.
>>
>>420737
Kazan Tatar here I grew up in Moscow but have a ton of family in Chelniy and Kazan

>How is relations between them and ruskis?
Pretty good never had any problems even retard skinheads don't bother us. Politicly also good the Tatar republic gets enough autonomy in the federation to not complain.

>Are all of them muslim?
It's generational oder generations are my grandparents generation everyone is muslim. My parents generation its hit and miss. My generation and younger (born in the 80s) almost no is.

>Where did they come from?
We have been here for over a thousand years.

>Are they bro tier?
depends on who you are.

>>420853

Kazan Tatars have nothing to do with Crimean Tatars. Tatar became a Russian idiom for someone foreign and it got applied to a bunch of people including crimean turks and the Mongol Invaders.
>>
>>421580
>not muslim
then what are they, Atheist or christian?

Also, from my experience, Caucasian Muslims(chechens, Dagestanis) are extremely Muslim, even the younger generations. Why is this different than Tatars?
