Let's have a thread about the cult of Baal.
What do you know about it?
It's a pretty popular boogeyman. Some people seriously think every religion not theirs is based on baal.
>>995876
But it's clearly influential.
>>995888
And laid thefoundation for indo european as well as native american paganism?
What does /his/ think about Rene Guenon? Was he right?
His features are 1.5x too large for his head.
Or is that a lifelike mask he's wearing, and there's really no face behind it?
sigh, why are these guys all such total fucking flakies.
>>995833
He is/was Neanderthalid.
Tell me about warfare in the early modern era, basically through 16th to 19th centuries, things like the Thirty Year's War and American Civil War.
How did massed gunpowder work? How was cavalry used? I feel like this form of warfare is the most underrated, even to the point of people thinking things like fencing is all gay. Tell me about it, what it was like, horsemenship, swordsmanship, marksmanship, and leadership.
Remember someone screencapping a really good greentext on what it all was like, I was hoping that would help.
>>995720
30 Years war was so bad because it was 30 years of armies pillaging and ruining German lands, thus massive spike in disease and starvation for both civs and soldiers.
>>995720
go watch some videos of people playing Empire: Total War for a very basic uinderstanding
Is there a better historian than this man?
inb4 john green
>>995746
Nobody on /his/ likes John Green. The only people who care are butthurt /pol/tards
>>995717
Jared Diamond
Whats so cool about Machu Picchu?
Why does everyone love it so much? Cause its a ruined city on a big mountain?
>>995378
Aesthetically pleasing
>>995378
Whenever nonwhite people do something noteworthy it's more talked about because it isn't expected.
Whats so cool about the Brandenburger Gate? Why does everyone love it so much? Cause its a big door leading to nowhere?
I want to talk about Byzantium /his/.
Specifically Justinian and Belisarius.
Were they cucks? Was the reconquest justified? Nika riots?
Give me what youve got.
>>995341
>Were they cucks?
Maybe Belisarius, I highly doubt Justinian was
>Was the reconquest justified?
Yes, the Empire doesn't reconquer itself you know
>Nika riots?
Rebels got fucked and Theodora proved she had bigger metaphorical balls than Justinian
>>995387
>Reconquest
How about in terms of lasting value though? The only thing gained from it really was a permanent presence in Southern Italy, everything else was lost.
Would it have been possible in another scenario to keep hold of the conquests instead of losing them so quickly?
>>995387
Depends on your concept of "cuck". Justinian married an ex-whore so, in my book, he's a cuck.
What war had the greatest room for glory? What war had the least room for glory?
>>995267
define glory
As far as least goes, definitely World War 1.
The most pointless war in human history, really.
>>995278
Honor, achievement, pride
What the fuck was his problem?
>>995221
Being a pretentious tit.
>>995253
Making people like you assravaged
He wanted to take the shit out of everyone.
Absolute madman.
When was the objective-subjective split formulated in the history of philosophy?
>>995155
this is a great image, OP.
>>995155
contemporary philosophy is pointless and arguably destructive to society
if any form of speech should be banned, that's it imo
>>995155
Has philosophy ended, /his/?

I was just reading about crime reports from the 1600th century (I believe I started off researching a coin) and I came across this gentleman:
Johann Jakob Wick (* 1522 in Zürich; † 14. August 1588 Zürich)
Pastor and the collector of the Wickiana.
--
The Wickiana is recognized as one of the most significant collections of news reports and documents pertaining to current events dating from the 16th century in the form of single-leaf and illustrated broadsheets, pamphlets, prints, handwritten texts and drawings. These time capsules form one of the most important archives pertaining to a particular epoch, namely that of the Reformation in Switzerland. Johann Jakob Wick (1522-1588), after whom the collection is named, was the clergyman at the Predigerkirche and its associated hospital in Zürich from 1552 and then second Archdeacon, and thus also canon, at the Grossmünster in Zürich from 1557. He assembled and arranged contemporary news documents chronologically between 1559 and 1588, also integrating further material from the period approx. 1505 until 1559 into his collection.
--
How fucking cool would it be to read that? Has any part of it ever been translated? My googling turns up nothing but photographs of the original documents themselves, which even a german would have difficulty getting through.
Unrelated but I find this whole time period really interesting and would like to own a huge poster of Europe as it existed at some point in it. Preferably something readable and more Crusader Kings II style than "ancient map." I can't find anything so I guess I'm going to have to make it myself by modding a game and somehow wrangling insane resolution screenshots out of there. Just mentioning in case one of you have done something like this and would like to offer comments or tips.
ps. communism is cancer

JO-HANN, JA-COB, WICK!
THAAAT'S, MY NAME, TOO! :D
Are there any credible sources for it? I've read some books on the subject but they all differ wildly.
>>994746
If you mean the pre-Christian beliefs, then no. The Slavic polytheists did not keep written records back during Antiquity and early middle ages. There are some records about the believers of the old faith in Slovenia during early 20th century but there isn't much written about them because most kept in secrecy.
A lot of the pre-Christian Slavic mythology is simply reconstruction. For example, Belobog, several Iranic additions, transplanting Western Slavic deities across all Slavic cultures,...

The Cyrillic letters spell out Svarog, fyi
>>996201
I know, I just prefer the Slovene version of the name. There's other names for him, too; Tvarog, Rarog, Rarach, Jarog.
What did Deng do so right?
Well not following Mao's total retardation for one.
>>994701
In many ways he did, but he didn't go full retard with the economy or another "revolution".
>>994696
Deng should be the face of the CCP and not Mao.
