Was the north largely anti-slavery because of moral reasons or because of the uselessness of slaves when compared to factories (That brings up another question, why didn't the north use slaves in their factories)

Read Eric Foner's "Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men," since it covers pretty well the ideology of the non-abolitionist majority of northerners who made up the Republican Party. Most of them were mainly interested in preventing the expansion of slavery into the western terrorities because they feared that would undermine their ability to settle in the region themselves and establish family farms and small town communities of the type they were used to in the Midwest and East. They were also concerned with the degradation of labor that they associated with slavery, but the morality and feelings of black slaves themselves were never really taken into consideration. So yes, the political and economic factors associated with slavery and its expansion were bigger concerns for most northerners than moral issues. Which is why most northerners (including Lincoln) were less interested in ending slavery than preventing its spread west. Radical abolitionists were never more than a vocal minority in the North prior to the start of the war.

>why didn't the north use slaves in their factories

They did, the Irish.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wage_slavery

A lot of politicians actually argued wage slavery was worse than the southern variety. In the south slaves were provided with food, clothing, medical care and what we'd now call job security. A wage slave may get paid for his work but if all of his money is spent those necessities, is it all that different?

That argument ignores self-determination, of course.
>>
>>1406989
Also, northern capitalists didn't use slave labor in the factories because 1. they were operating in a non-slave society in the north and 2. hiring free wage labor was cheaper than owning or even leasing slaves for factory work. Less obligation to provide for wage workers and their needs once they leave the factory if you don't own them but instead have a labor contract with "free" individuals. Which is not to say that industrial societies and slavery are incompatible (the south's industries and railroads relied extensively on slave labor, and for construction projects).

George Fitzhugh wrote extensively of the north's "wage slavery" and contrasted it negatively with the chattel slavery systems of the South. A lot of poor workers in the North were sympathetic to this line of argument and hence the working class, particularly the Irish had little sympathy for black slaves, since they viewed slaves as having a better lot in life than they did.

How do Christians reconcile God's perfection and omnipotence/omniscient with the (supposed) fact that he created both the Universe and humans?
106 posts and 23 images submitted.
>>
They blame Adam and Eve for sinning and thus cursing the perfect world into being painful and full of death.
>>
>>1414121
I am talking about the Creation.

For what reason could a supposedly perfect, self-contained, almighty and all-knowing being have decided to create the world? It's paradoxical, since a perfect being would want for nothing.
>>
>>1414121
Seems like a mighty big cop-out.

Why make humans with the capacity for sin? Why make the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Why not just make humans be born into heaven in the first place if God loves us so much, why the Rube Goldberb-esq "get into heaven" scheme? Why create Satan if God is omniscient and knew he would fall?

And don't give me the "muh free will" BS, if our choices are eternal suffering or doing gods will, that's not a choice.

Was Allah a god from the pre-Islamic Arabian pantheon?
53 posts and 3 images submitted.

No, he was the primary deity of the Hebrew pantheon.
>>
Allah is literally the arabic word for god
So unless the pre-islamic arabs had a god called "God" in their pagan pantheon, I doubt it

>So unless the pre-islamic arabs had a god called "God" in their pagan pantheon, I doubt it

Greeks had so - Zeus is actually etymological cognate od Theos. Same with Germanics and Tyr (derived from Tiwaz - god). Or Slavs with Dazbog (literally god-giver).

>muh stupid unsubstantiated myth
First of all, they look fucking nothing like Greeks to begin with, neither them nor Kalash.
Second of all, Greeks weren't all that light to begin with compared to middle eastern populations.
Third of all, genetic studies prove they're more or less like their neighbours, albeit with peculiarities that come from isolation for thousands of years. They're local selections for the same traits as in Europe.
Finally, pre-proto-IEan genomes were sequenced and they were all without exception dark haired and dark eyed, and the light pigmentation in northern Europe is a recent post neolithic development. So cut the 'muh blond eyed untermensch aryan' meme shit or go back to pol.

All of the white-ish people of central Asia (Nuristanis, Kalash, Pamiris, etc) are descended partially from the Tocharians, the Indo-European people who inhabited the Tarim basin until they were conquered by the Uyghurs. There is also lesser contribution from Indo-Iranian steppe tribes and Greco-Bactrians.
>>
>>1410817
Bullshit. Large-scale Mutations have happened in many instances. Aussie Abos can be blonde, uncontacted African tribes can have green eyes, and certain Native American tribes had blue eyes when they were first discovered.

You know I've always tried to stray from the whole, for lack of better term, "le wrong generation" mindset, but I always have found a calling to it. Sometimes when I see an old picture, I get this weird pang of nostalgic sadness that I just can't explain. What is it that compels guys like us to this way of thought? Is it the fact that we are historians at heart, that we want more than anything to witness these dates and places we've spent so much time thinking about? Is it that we never quite fit in in our times, and in some way, we think that we are better suited for another time? Perhaps, those times really were better. I know this is probably not true, but don't we all sometimes get that feeling that the romanticism is dead in the modern era? Don't you sometimes feel like you're living in those last few turns of a game of Civilization where you've set all your cities to autocomplete, and are just biding time for your spaceship to Alpha Centauri to finish, all of your battles fought, all of your struggles finished, all of your glories won? We feel cheated by this fact, that there were so many interesting times in the world, but our own lives are so boring (the fact that this is probably our own doing being so lost on us).

In the end, I think what it really comes down to is our existential dread. We are all so afraid of our lives being pointless. That we lived for nothing, that we accomplished nothing, and that we, for whatever reason, missed out on all of the adventures of life that we should have set out on. There is a comfort from this fear in looking backwards. We know how their stories end, there is no other way they could go. Deep down, we long for the comfort of that, that we could free ourselves from the shackles of free will, and exist in a story that we already know the end of, instead of blazing our own story in our own world. Anyway, those are just some thoughts I've had.

Piketty proposes a global system of progressive wealth taxes to help reduce inequality and avoid the vast majority of wealth coming under the control of a tiny minority."

I'm not trying to sound like a tinfoil /pol/tard, and in most cases I'm pretty exceptionally liberal.
However why do people like to claim the Jews have been persecuted for so long?
It's an objective historical fact that the Biblical Exodus never happened (the most likely historical source would be the Hyskos).

While the holocaust happened, it is a fact that much of it is greatly exaggerated for propaganda purposes.

Then we all just go and give them a country that wasn't there's just because of this supposed suffering.

Is there any actual validity to historical Jewish persecution? Because as an aspiring Biblical and political scholar, it seems to me to be utter bullshit.

Let me just stop you right there. Nobody gave Israel to the Jews. They made that from scratch. The west wanted Jews and Pallys to play nice and both parties told them to fuck off.

>Is there any actual validity to historical Jewish persecution?

Yeah it may have been over exaggerated but their are literally 100's of potential examples.

The entire history of the Jews have been based around lies, false accusations of persecution.
