Did the Danzig Massacre of August 1939 actually happen? There are a few websites and documentaries (most notably The Greatest Story Never Told) that state around 35,000-58,000 ethnic Germans were murdered by Polish authority right before Hitler declared war in September. Most historians and other modern-day sources claim that Hitler invaded Poland because of the Lebensraum ideology, without mentioning the massacre. Is there any bedrock evidence supporting the Danzig Massacre, or is it all just NSDAP propaganda?

What goes unmentioned in those circles is how some Germans (see Selbstschutz) rose up in arms before and during invasion and started attacking Polish army and civilians.
I'm not even sure it's NSDAP propaganda, it's probably modern Hitlerboos trying to cast Hitler's actions in a moral light that's different from "we want it so we shall conquer it", which was pretty much Nazi mentality.
If Nazis were really just trying to unite German ethnic population, ask them why did they occupy the rest of Bohemia and Moravia AFTER getting territories with German population in Munich Agreement.
