Recommend a backpack that can protect a 14inch laptop and has room for other things, Change of clothes or two, side pocket for water bottle etc
>>58185484
most north face backpacks and maybe some Trans Jansport backpacks
but depends on width of laptop
Get a Timbuk2 if you can. Very good, but expensive backpacks. Otherwise, you cannot go wrong with Swiss Gear. I myself have Swiss Gear Synergy, and it is incredible.
>>58185484
If you are OK spending $150 on a backpack (you'll be using this for a long time), I just got an Ogio Surge for Christmas. It has a special compartment for an up to 15" laptop and even a sunglasses vault.

/g/ if there is someone with experience in the field can someone tell me how it is like to be a researcher in CS. I am thinking of applying for a MSc and later get a PhD, but I am unsure if it is the right field.
>>58185470
I'm currently a PhD student, can you be more specific?
>>58185485
Can you tell about how the study structure is, and what form of work one would be taught as a PhD student in CS.
I for one think that I would like to focus on AI/Machine Learning or Databases is this some terms you focus a lot on in your studies?
>>58185559
>Can you tell about how the study structure is
Easy, there isn't any because you're basically hired to do research (and sometimes TA'ing on the side depending on your contract). This means that you yourself have to find the time to read up on background and related research and find time to do your own research.
There are two ways of getting hired as a PhD. Most commonly is that a research group at the CS department have applied for some research project that has funding for N PhD positions, and you apply for one of those and get to work on something related to that project. The other is to find funding yourself, i.e. by being hired by a company and do a so-called industry PhD, but this is a lot harder because you need to formulate what you're supposed to do correctly, find internal and external supervisors etc, and there's an inherent conflict of interest between the company (which wants to make money) and you (who wants a PhD and develop yourself).
>and what form of work one would be taught as a PhD student in CS.
You are taught how to conduct research, which is essentially the same as any PhD candidate in a STEM field.
>I for one think that I would like to focus on AI/Machine Learning or Databases is this some terms you focus a lot on in your studies?
No, some of my colleagues are into machine learning but I'm into doing systems and networking stuff. Sorry.
I want every package in my system to be recompiled using clang with my custom compiler flags, rebuilding the kernel with these flags, too would be also nice.
Is this easily possible in Arch Linux?
>>58185329
>Compiling the kernel
>using clang
Pick one
>>58185375
Sorry of course I wouldnt use clang for the kernel, but the flags
>>58185411
Just use Gentoo
I'm a long time user of GNU/Linux and I'm tired of configurations and constant loops. I just want something that werks. Forget this I'm going to Windows.
>>58185321
>Windows
>werks
heh, good one
But I agree, Linux is great for many things, but as a desktop OS it is absolutely useless. That's why I started using a MBP with macOS as my daily driver at home, and ssh onto my headless Linux workstations at work to do work.
>>58185321
If you had been a long time user of GNU/Linux then you would have been way past any state of frustration because you would know how to get something that 'werks'.
Linux is the most popular server OS just BECAUSE you can get something that reliably works without any downtime if you know what you are doing.
So you are likely just a child who has never even tried the OS. If what you say are true, then give me a ONE-LINE command that can change a folder filled with files looking like this:season-6 episode 3.avi
season-8 Episode 7.avi
season-8 episode 8.avi
And change the name of all the files in the folder so that they look like this:S06E03.avi
S08E07.avi
S08E08.avi
Anyone who have used GNU/Linux for a long time would have no problem doing simple one-line file management.
I'm doing the same because I need to be able to play VNs.
I ran into a problem though. My wireless adapter's manufacturer mediatek is no longer offering drivers on their website. What the fuck.

So desperately cute and transparent.

Are you determined?
If you were determined you would have studied harder in school

Why /g/ suggest to install Gentoo? Why not Slackware, Arch, or any other GNU/Linux distribution?
>>58185047
It's a meme you fucking idiot. Why are you interpreting memes seriously? Are you severely autistic?
>>58185047
You get full control how it's compiled.
>>58185047
The large community support base and being able to compile packages with the features you want is amazing. Gentoo is not a meme it's a really great distro.
I've got a problem , when I try to boot Linux Kali from USB or CD , the only thing I get is Black screen before boot options .
Does anyone Know how to solve this ?
Install Gentoo instead
Be a h4x0r and figure it out yourself
How you gonna be a l337 h4cker if you cant figure out how to use boot a liveCD
hey /g/ what is this? can i sell it?
It's a transformer. You can sell it for $20 on ebay.
Put it back tyrone
>>58184969
call me Juan please
>>58184963
i see that some transformers are sold at 100+
Alright /g/ I have around $1500 to spend on a graphics card/monitor(s) what should I get?
I already have decent everything else, a i7 3770k, 16gb ram, etc etc. My graphics card is pretty old, a gtx 660, and can barely run/can't even run almost all newer games. I also use a 1920x1080p monitor, just regular old monitor, 60Hz.
With $1500 can I get a good graphics card + two 4k monitors? Or two of those ultrawide 1440 ones? Does higher than 60Hz make a big difference? Should I stick with 1080p monitors and just get a really good graphics card like a Titan X Pascal?
I really want to try and get 2 monitors if at all possible. I'm mainly interested in playing Star Citizen (Star Marine, 2.6 patch I get single digit FPS), Wildlands, DOOM, BF1, etc.
Any advice would help, thanks! :D
>considering going dual 4k monitors or getting a Titan X
>With a fucking 3770k
Enjoy your bottlenecks, retard.
>>58184934
Ey m8 what LG Ultrawide is that?
>>58184993
Should I spend the money on upgrading my CPU then? I'd need a new motherboard as well, and then graphics card and monitors?
Hey /g/ whats a good linux distro for data recovery?
I need to retrieve some files.

Tried that it wouldn't boot.
Can we talk about "Download Valley" for a minute, aka the fucking hugely profitable adware corporations based in Tel Aviv like Genieo and Spigot?
How fucked is it that it's totally okay for the tech industry in Israel to be more or less entirely based off of "potentially unwanted programs", like giving adware a euphamism somehow legitimizes it to the point where companies like IronSource can brag about being the biggest swinging dick in the country and get valued at over a billion fucking dollars?
http://www.geektime.com/2015/01/18/meet-israels-low-profile-unicorn-ironsource/
The fact that a corporation can exist to just create malware is totally fucky. The fact that they're all clustered in fucking Israel of all places...
Fucking jews!!!!!!!!!!! It's like they WANT everyone to hate them. Even if this malware just targets normies, it fucking pisses me off to no end. It makes the douchebags in the San Jose suburbs look downright ethical.
THEIR WHOLE FUCKING INDUSTRY IS MALWARE, FUCK THOSE ASSHOLES, GODDAMMIT, they make the fucking Chinese look good ffs.
“I don’t think there’s a single person in Israel who isn’t familiar with our company,” Tomer Bar-Zeev, the company’s CEO, tells Geektime. “We’ve been in all the newspapers.”
“But in principle, “ he adds, “we believe in a low profile.”
Nobody gives a shit? Really? Fuck, I write distributed server shit and crypto to actually try to help people. These fags are doing something that's super illegal in the US but it apparently A-OK enough in Israel to have FUCKING BILLION DOLLAR COMPANIES based around fucking MALWARE. I know you can't say a number is ethical but goddamn, what you can do with numbers can be completely unethical. People would get lynched for doing this kind of shit publicly in SV and they get fucking lauded for it in Israel?
"Yaaay you made everyone's computers and browsers work less well because you have the best company that installs software that puts ads on ppl's shit without them knowing!"
"Yaay, you made someone else's product way shittier with your product, and people don't even know that they have your product because you lied to them!"
Fucking
Kikels
Fucking come on, at least some of us write for a reason other than trying to make as much money as possible. Nobody has anything to say about the tech industry in Israel being completely fucked up? Where's all the people who were all "it's about ethics in the gaming industry" from last year?
I DIDN'T LEARN OCAML FOR THIS SHIT
I DIDN'T CONTRIBUTE TO IDRIS FOR THIS SHIT

>>58184719
Linux is nigger tier trash, has no games.
shitposting
>>58184719
How about getting a job faggot wintoddler microshill?
Why is 8GB of RAM considered the minimum for gaming? As far as I know, no game uses more than 4GB, and I've been fine running games for more than 4 years now with just 4GB of RAM.
Is having more than 4GB of RAM a meme? Will I even see an increase in FPS if I buy another stick? Redpill me on this, /g/.
Most new TRIPLE A games require at least 8 gigs.
Shit many recommend 16 instead of 8 now.
68 bit processors open the window for terrabytes of RAM
>>58184536
>Why is 8GB of RAM considered the minimum for gaming?
Because devs don't have the time to be neat and do a proper job.
