When I was a bit younger I wanted to live a hermits live, but that view changed, because despite what I have seen (glimpses in the grand scheme of things) I see no point in fleeing this world. This also steems from a certain practical point of view, because if I remain here, in society and all that, what's the poing of doing magic for example, If I cannot use it to improve my live.
Naturally there is also the quest for knowledge, truth, wisdom and the unknown, but again, that does not mean fleeing this world in my opinion.

Modern santa claus is a mix of older religious figures. If I remember correctly; odin (who rode a 7 legged horse through the sky during winter solstice), sinter klass (Scandinavian santa), St nicholas (guy who put coins in children's shoes), krampus (German black santa who punishes bad kids) and maybe some more.
Most modern day western festivals are a cocktail of older civilizations' beliefs.
