If Alchemy was possible, and a group or individual knew how to do it, would anyone even know? What would they gain from letting out this secret, other than making theirs, and everyone else's gold worthless?

If stories of Nicolas Flamel and the Count of St. Germain are any indication, people would know but nobody would take the stories seriously.
Obviously letting out the secret would be bad, while a lot of good could come with keeping the secret. Supposedly, Flamel donated a lot to charity.
