In my opinion, and it is of course a matter of opinion, his stories are very good. The main reason he's so well regarded is that he took horror in a completely new direction. He and his friends used to get together and have an intellectual dick measuring contest by seeing who could write the most far out creatures. Lovecraft signalled a departure from witches, werewolves, and Wendigo and the arrival of the Old Gods. A writhing mass of tentacles as the creator of the universe floating through space, Cthulu, etc. In my mind Lovecraft is on his own separate scale for horror, and I believe this is a shared opinion as I've heard certain types of horror called "Lovecraftian". I actually met an old god one time. Ask me anything. Just kidding, I'm not a total faggot.

I try to keep my shit cool in the face of his alpha macho bullshit, but tell him this is the first time this season I've been up here. He tells me some of the camps have been broken into, and it looked like people had been using it as a place to squat, and that my company is the only one who knows how to get in (yeah right, everyone knows where everyone else keeps the keys).

Worse yet, it looked like animals had got in, too, because there was a stash of dead squirrels and rats in one of the camps. So I calm him down by telling him I'd let my boss know about it so he could ask around.

But this is my first time opening camps by myself, so there's no way I could have done this shit. Or at least, not by myself.

So, I go through the rest of the farm, and down the mile or so little dirt path that goes to the camps.

When you're going down this little road, it feels legit like banjo-plucking cannibal country. There's an old danger road sign halfway down, and I've def seen a couple of dead deer. Idk why, but it's like someone had been hunting (not in season) and then just discarded the carcass there.

Let me tell you, it's nasty and freaky as shit rounding a hairpin turn only to get jumpscared by a skinless deer.

Anyway, so I get to the camps, which despite the road to them, are actually really nice.

The old guy owner likes to keep everything nicely mowed and maintained, and despite stupid asshole summer people putting up things they don't get permission for first, it's probably the nicest, quietest, and most serene camp I go to.

When I start going from cabin to cabin to see what kind of outside work I have to do, I start seeing why the owner's son got so pissed; the outsides of the little houses have been damaged in various ways, and I already can tell there's going to be higher bills and less TV catching up on this job.

What an oddly specific thread.

The only thing I've experienced with other people around were piercing shrieks in the distance and other strange noises in Oakville's portion of Sixteen Mile Creek.
There have been a couple of times when we were well into the woods and far from any conventional path, where we were sure that someone was following us wherever we went.
I've found wood and mud huts, and shredded tents in the woods around the creek, which I guess isn't too bizarre. It's just so weird seeing these kind of things a three hour hike away from anything else.
Travelling too deep into the area always leaves me unsettled.

Let me just back up to a day or so before this happened. I was looking for some inspiration and help, so I performed a spur-of-the-moment invocation of two different demons (I've been a practicing Satanist for a year now and have had no problems until now). Long story short, I heard a really fucked up voice in my ear as I was falling asleep, saying something in another language. One demon kept good on his promise (and I was amazed by how people in public were treating me, as though my body really had physically changed - but that's another story).

But then the rapings happened, and I knew I had let something else in.

"They" (whatever they are) wanted to harvest my sexual energy. I think they finally left after I refused to give any more to them, but the problem is ... my buddy won't come back either.

I'm very depressed now, because I may have lost a good spirit companion of three years because of this. All because of a demonic invocation gone wrong.

I don't know if it's because he was too weak to fight them off (and is ashamed about it), or if they corrupted him, or if he was really one of them all along.

I can sense his presence, but it feels very far away and very troubled.
