Is it possible to reach a level of magic whereby you depart your body permanently? Almost every occult or religious text makes reference to the astral/spiritual plane or higher wavelengths of vibration which I'm sure most of us have experienced in our own ways. Can we through practice of magic ever transcend our physical beings? Do we need more lifetimes?

I found this passage in The Mystical Qabalah interesting; Dion Fortune describes those who want to experience a higher more godly plane as "pathological". Isn't that something of a goal in many spiritual practices?

Where the bhuddist seeks freedom by trying to escape from the wheel of life, the westerner wants to jam the wheel so it stops spinning so he can find freedom from death and can life forever.

Yes. It's called "death".

Probably, but it wouldn't be all that good
You'd just force yourself into being a ghost, and then you'd have no body to return to.
Just live and die normally
