It's not SO bad, even on the first playthrough.
I beat all the bosses first try with a decently min-maxed (but not overlevelled) PvP build. The actual levels were pretty tough to be sure though and I died a few times learning how to best work my through them. Once you know how they're not so bad however. As for bosses, Midir is the only mildly tough one since he has a really large HP pool and can one-shot you if you didn't properly invest in Vigor and defense. Gael is actually a pushover once you learn his pattern and how to punish his attacks and Halflight is always easy (unless you get a turbohacker or PvP god as a summon).

Why the fuck would any developer still make sprites in this day and age?
>take way too much work to make
>cost too much money to make
>look dated by virtue of being sprites
>more work to make good animations with less payoff(you can do the same and way better animation using 3d models)
>game will look pixelated no matter what you do
>if you really want you can use 3d models and fake making them look like sprites(ie. ori and the blind forest, salt and sanctuary, guilty gear revelator)
>3d models in a 2d game allow for way more detail and can make the game look more realistic, can use realistic hd 3d textures for the best detail for background stuff, sprites are limited to cartoony shit so it can't look realistic
>making a 2d style game is retarded anyway since it will be overshadowed by all the numerous 3d games being made

Why is modern vidya so big? Hollow Knight, a fun indie game with sprite-based graphics, is over 8GB. And the PC remasters of Final Fantasy X+X2 are over 37GB, which is over 3x the size of the PS2 originals (1 DVD disc each, so at most they'd be less than 10GB - and they probably didn't fill the disc). Meanwhile, FFIV 3D is 777 MB, which is neat - but the DS original is 10% of this! And FFVI on PC is almost 1 GB, when the original game is the size of a MP3! It's madness. Not trying to complain, just wondering how it got like this.

With the standard being 50GB thanks to Bluray, nobody is bothering to compress textures, audio or pre-rendered video anymore. It's been this way since the FMV era of CDs. Bloat up all that empty space with "stuff".
