So, this just happened last night.

>On long campaign
>Get stuck in this little valley, and there are giant flaming walls of pure red force locking us in.
>A few villages with inbred villagers, little help although they can resupply us. The red walls have been flaring up and down intermittently for as long as anyone can remember.
>When they go up, they're usually up for years at a time.
>Oh great.
>Start investigating odd ruins and ancient sites, and learn some of the history of the area
>Pseudo-Egyptian shit, and this place used to be the center of a mighty empire thousands of years ago, and the buried their pharohs here, so lots of mummies
>Empire fell apart due to civil war, and for reasons, both rival pharohs are mummified in the area
>Both mummies are intermittently active
>They still hate each other
>One of them is putting up the walls to keep all of the other's supporters locked in here so he can crush them
>Of course, being mummies in heavily trapped tombs designed to keep things in as much as keep them out, they can't get at each other
>We hatch a plan to install a teleportation route between the two tombs, and lure one of them to the other so they can have it out once and for all.
>There is heavy DM hinting, by the way, that hints is what we should do. Otherwise we'd probably just try to kill both of them.

>Break Evil Mummy #1 out of his tomb.
>He starts chasing us.
>Throw some summons to slow him down
>He wastes them quickly enough to show that he's really dangerous.
>Keep trying to lure him to the teleporter
>He's too close to us for comfort
>Finally, our Cleric pulls out his holy symbol and tries to turn undead, hoping it'll at least stall him a bit
>Has several feats boosting it, one of it homebrewed allowing the use of multiple turning attempts to make a single big turn attempt. Burn them all on this one go.
>DM rolls
>Mummy disintegrates from the force of positive energy being directed at him
>DM looks at his notes for a moment, and then says"Well, you won't be able to lure him to [other mummy's] tomb now. He won't turn off the walls until he lapses into somnolence again. Do you want to timeskip for a few years when you can finally leave, or just call it an end to this group?

I'm voting for option three, of leave shitty game.

How would /pfg/ feel about a game with Armor as DR, but you get to divy up your BAB among hit, damage and a dodge bonus to AC? Maybe something about metal armor giving a bonus on saves vs magic, like +1 for light, +2 medium, +4 heavy. Cold iton armor grants a save bonus equal to AC value (min. +1 over whatever it grants for weight category). Sound interesting or just retarded?

Any dragon the party would face before 10th level or so - give or take, depending on the edition - is basically a little kid.

I've never seen this perceived childkilling addressed in any book I've read, or by any player I've spoken to. Yet it's been bothering me ever since the beginning. How the hell are you supposed to justify taking their life? How can you ever even feel good doing it?

A dragon is not a human, therefore human values don't really apply.
The baby dragon is sentient, but it also a monster.
In my opinion killing a childlike dragon is very distasteful, but not evil or wrong.
>>
>>52512968
>A dragon is not a human, therefore human values don't really apply.

There's a lot of nonhuman things in the game. Do you apply this logic to elves and dwarves as well?
>>
>>52512917
That's actually why I never put true dragons in my low/mid-level games. For exactly that reason.

Well, plus it just seems a little stupid. How much glory is there to be gained by slaying a teenage dragon.

Do you prefer point buy or random rolling systems /tg/?

What are some good examples of point buy systems? What are some bad ones?

What are some good roll generation systems? What are some bad ones?

Point buy.
GURPS. GURPS with a bad/new GM.
Traveller and Marvel Superheroes are good. D&D starting 3e and FATAL are bad.
>>
>>52512234
I prefer point buy.

Random rolling isn't bad, but it should be updated to more fair methods of random generation for current era games imo.

To be absolutely fair, I have started preferring stat-less, or at least stat-light systems lately. Stats are usually just numerical bonuses, which, in the grand scheme of things, just aren't really exciting, so arguing about their generation method is even less so.
>>
Random systems are fine for short games or games that are more focused on story rather than mechanical rules combat. Something like MaidRPG is a great example for rolling stats in, because failing rolls is a good part of the fun in the system.

Point buy is great for mechanical rules combat or tightly designed systems. It doesn't make sense to roll stats in D&D 4e because the system is so tightly wound around the core mechanical crunch.

Personally I would rather not play mechanics-heavy systems. I feel like they get in the way of roleplaying a lot of the time. Generally speaking, I could go for either rolling or point-buy, but I'd prefer point-buy for longer campaigns and rolling for shorter ones or ones where stats didn't matter as much.

Because martials want to be challenged and actually roleplay. Mages want to solve every encounter in the game with a spell or two and then be praised for it.

Because both happen to play the same system while playing completely different characters.

How do you do Chaotic Neutral, /tg/?

Surely there are ways to make a CN character that isn't a lolrandum retard.

Tell me stories of the time you played/saw a CN character that did the alignment justice.

>friend built a CN bard

>>52511543
What even is chaotic neutral?
Is it someone who no matter the situation only ever think about themselves disregarding the law or other people?

If that is the case then what is chaotic evil. Is it someone who does the same but also actively tries to hurt others?
>>
I once saw someone describe the alignments like this:

Lawful: Rigid in their methods
Neutral: Flexible with their methods
Chaotic: Impulsive with their methods

Good: Cares for all people
Neutral: Cares for people close to them
Evil: Cares only for oneself
>>
>>52511708
Not necessarily. Evil characters can love too.
I'd say:

-Lawful: Adheres to a strict code and/or sense of purpose
-Neutral: Has vague ethics, that may or may not be influenceable in the heat of the action.
-Chaotic: Prioritizes what it thinks/it believes it must do rather than stick to something.

-Good: Tries to prioritize the wellbeing of others over one's own goals, and/or said goals involve helping others rather than self-benefit:
-Neutral: Is either self-interested but will try and avoid hurting others as much as possible in the path toward said goals, or has a vaguely selfless goal that hurts others outside of the group the character is selfless towards when necessary.
-Evil: May have fundamentally selfish or selfless goals, but does not have an issue with hurting others while striving for said goals.

>>52511543
Example: Chaotic Neutral Barbarian Dudebro
He likes a honorable fight, he likes strong food, he likes pretty women, but first and foremost he is loyal to his bros (aka the party).

I had in mind to code a simulator and then have it run every single build possible versus each other to see which has the best odds of winning overall, but maybe there are better ways. What would you guys do?

A lot of gamebreaking stuff tends to come from shit you do before battle; creating minions, buffing yourself up, etc.

My approach would be to look for force multipliers; minions, damage multiplying buffs/feats, shit like that, then try to combine them.

What are some examples of events that mark the end of an era?

What sort of event would have people begin a new age and start counting years at 0 again? It doesn't have to be super apocalyptic but significant enough for people to mark a new period of time as beginning.

This is high fantasy, btw. And I already have the one about the "fall of a massive empire"

Dragons going extinct is a good one I've seen.

Also discovery of the setting's "New World"

Been thinking of running a one-shot with some friends based of an idea i have for a novel, but I don't know which system would work well for it since all I really know are D&D 3.5 and 5th.
Combat is mostly melee and while there are guns, they're rare but rather powerful given not everyone has one and they don't really have the materials to make ballistic vests and shit.
Outside of combat theres standard diplomacy but thats easy enough to figure out, its combat I'm worried about, any help would be appreciated.
Don't really have any /tg/ related pics so have this.

Well, that's not much to go on. In such situations I usually go for generic systems. Savage Worlds hits a good balance between complexity and easy of use for me. It's got rules for guns of different time periods, and is generally pretty good for running fantasy stuff.

>its combat I'm worried about

Well, in this case I've got another possible alternative, if you are okay with 0 simulation 100% gamism style class based tactical combat.
>>
>>52510367
Stop shilling Strike!

Why does /tg/ keep shilling Strike!?
>>
>>52510195
Savage Worlds and GURPS both offer powerful guns, the former being easier to hit with (which makes cover important) and the latter being, well, realistic. They're both decently in-depth, too, so melee combat will be fun, unlike D&D.

Both are good at handling social encounters.

Do you have any other needs?
