It is 445 years since the Capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen (known in English as the "Sea Beggars). This marked a turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was undefended, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison had left in order to deal with trouble in Utrecht. On the evening of April 1, the 600 men sacked the undefended port. As they were preparing to leave, one of the men said there was no reason they should leave where they were.

In August 1585, Brielle was one of the four Dutch towns that became an English possession by the Treaty of Nonsuch when Queen Elizabeth I received it as security of payment for 5000 soldiers used by the Dutch in their struggle against the Spanish. In 1617, these cities returned to the Netherlands.

Dutch students are taught a short rhyme to remember this event: "Op 1 april verloor Alva zijn bril," meaning "On April 1st, Alva lost his glasses," making a pun between bril, Dutch for 'glasses', and the name of the town, Brielle or Den Briel.

Given the reforms that stripped power from the senate late in the empire it would probably grow to resemble the conception of a divine monarch or Charlemagne.

I wouldn't change anything militarily because without that you'd lose a great deal of the roman character.

There would probably be a move northward as the world entered the medieval warm period too.

I was trying to consider how Roman tactics or gear would evolve to match the increase in cavalry usage. couldn't decide if they'd stick with mercenary cav and their own shit cav, if they'd improve their own ability to field cavalry, or if they'd re-invent the Triarii to counter horse heavy enemies.

The testudo stays the way it was; strong vs massed archers of the period. Most of the Roman military image and tradition come form simply HAVING a professional full time army. That alone is going to make them stand out in a medieval world more reliant on levies.

Even f it was scaled back to fit a monarchy, having a standing force equal to even a few legions as a "royal army" would be note worthy.

When I was in high school I somehow found myself in a group of 30+yo people. I was totally That Guy, and didn't know any better. I made so many mistakes. However, I learned from it. Just take note of what makes you That Guy and modify your behavior accordingly. Stop lolsorandumb characters. Stop doing whatever kind of shenanigans you do to derail the campaign. Even if you can't stop, at least take note and learn from it for the future.

Like recently I played in a game where everyone but me forgot about a certain rule that would have gotten two characters killed. So instead of being a That Guy and rules lawyer two player characters to the grave I just not mention it and complain about it on 4chan afterwards.

Since it's funny though, I'm gonna say that I'm shilling for GURPS

Mostly through two factors:
>playing nwn/nwn2 online on RP persistent words
>playing other pnp games than d&d

first one was basically a INTENSIVE course with all the shit D&D can produce. While nwn/nwn2 donn't portray all of the D&D mechanics it has enough of it, along with fuckton faggots do insisting on porting them in dice rolling non-engine forms and generally playing it RAW.
And it was "intensive" course because, contrary to playing one game a week with four or five people, you could just log there everyday and meet all sorts of players. Every single thing that could be wrong with D&D was quckly exposed to me.

Meanwhile I was playing pnp and reading even more games that I was playing and I realized that it is entirely possible to make things SO DIFFERENT from D&D - in awesome ways - that I didn't even imagine before.

Then I looked back at my PnP experience with D&D prior to nwn stuff and in hindsight couldn't evaluate it as shit and waste of time compared to what I can have with better games.
