Seriously guys, I know you get excited about your memes, but maybe reign it in a little?
Right, CYOA question now.
What's one quest you really love, but has almost never been talked/memed/mentioned in thread?

I know Anonpone is dead, but even when it was still active no one really talked about it, which was always weird to me. It was one of, if not, the most played/popular CYOA we had.
>take robot pone
>attach airship parts
Space will be back up tomorrow morning. It's hard to believe the quest is already a year old. I'm aiming to get Space finished sometime this year, I reckon I can get things done in a few months or so if I don't be a lazy cunt.
I think that's exactly the issue lord of trips. He is too nice all of the time. I worry that it's only a matter of time before he snaps and just takes all of his pent up aggression on some poor unsuspecting Mares's ass or pussy. Holding her down by biting the nape of her neck as he fills her with load after load of his half changling hate paste; until she's little more than a mewling, orgasming mess on the floor. Not enough of her faculties left to even realize she's knocked up.
We need to be careful and make sure this doesn't happen.
I thought it was case insensitive, but no luck. I changed it to "CYOA Disc" after the misspelled thread, but it still missed this one. I had to add a second one that wasn't capitalized, and a third in case they ever do cyoa in lower case.
Filters do handle regular expressions ye fuck. This is with only '/cyoa/i'
Reminder about your moth pony character's horse cock
An idea I had is that a mare gets kidnapped by changelings and taken to their hive to become a broodmare. She soon gets impregnated with eggs and she struggles to fight off the growing changeling influence on her mind and body while trying find a way to escape from the hive.
Perhaps it would have freewill and health stats.
Content wise it could have stuff involving mind control/brainwashing, mental struggle and anguish, ovipositor sex, escape attempts and pregnancy.
Anyway I don't have any time for this, but would be cool for someone to do.
Was this faggot belittled or accepted in the stream?
This determines weather or not the stream itself is good or bad. A good stream chat would tear this fudge packer a new butthole. His presents alone says nothing though.
>someone requests Fruitflank incest porn in nips sekrit club.
>People say no.
sshhhhhh...it'll be okay anon.
>Now, for all intents and purposes, your father had rather "exotic" tastes. You are half CHANGELING, half EARTH pony. You can still alter your appearance, but you aren't under Chrysalis' control. Lucky you!
>Implying the risk of being under her control if his mom was another random changling.
Your last quote doesn't make any sense. You might want to try using actual sentences instead.
Now, what the post says is that he's half changeling and he's not under Chrysalis', who is a hive queen in Equestria, control. That doesn't imply anything about who his mother is or is not.
It may seem obvious to you, but a lot of people don't understand or appreciate the importance of a good prompt.
I've been exploring tgchan, and for many of their quests the prompts are nonexistent. Everything is so slow and meandering that it's painful to read — I can't even imagine how boring and frustrating it must be as a player. Many of the few quests that do have acceptable pacing are railroaded with thinly veiled non-choices.
I think we need to praise and criticize our QM's prompts more often here in /cyoag/, because they really are more important than interesting characters or witty dialog or skilled art.
Just a friendly reminder that "Just a friendly reminder that writing an engaging quest is the most important thing for writing an engaging quest." Is thee most important thing for writing an engaging quest
Prompts are not updates. You can have beautifully written posts with weak prompts and mediocre posts with strong prompts.
a 'prompt' is just a catch all term for the information that is conveyed to the player in a post that helps structure the players decisions.
a weak prompt would be like asking what 1+1 is, because there's just one painfully obvious answer. There's no room for choice there and the 'prompt' is basically just a break between updates. See older NE threads for an example of this. Nips went pretty hard in writing long and detailed dialogue trees but some of his prompts essentially amounted to 'Wait for thing to happen'
>a 'prompt' is just a catch all term for the information that is conveyed to the player in a post that helps structure the players decisions.
Good definition senpai.
You could also say that a prompt is the NEW information that is given to a players after each update, with the intention of pressuring the players into making a decisions.
>Coltshan cucks will continue to believe he will come back after this session, or the 2nd one
>Quest he does are utter shit
>People tell him
>He humbly accepts the criticism and decide to try something new
It's actually the quickest way to git gud, you know?
Even if he still has a long, long, LONG way to go
You missed an action.
>He then proceeds to make the same mistakes again as if he never heard them.
It's actually the best way to never improve.
Also, claiming he does anything 'new' is a stretch. It's all the same concept approached from different ways as if how he approaches is is what's wrong.
I'm not. I said
>No one's done what Coltshan has. A dozen dead quests. It's not something anyone should aim for.
What Coltshan has done in the past is not something any prospective QM should aim for. Going in blind without understanding the basics of your players, showing that you're actively unable to parse genuinely given advice, repeatedly starting and abandoning quests instead of trying to improve the problems that have been described to you. You should, in fact, aspire to be the opposite of what he's shown in every way but the tenacity.
He might improve or have improved. It doesn't change my position or my statement.
Altight, I think it ok to bail out when nobody follows what you do anymore to try a new fresh start, but that's only an opinion
Furthermore, I don't feel like he'd have been quicker to pick up things by lurking, considering hiw he's done so far.
Sure that ended up producing some quite spectacular train wrecks
But it's not like we run short of shitty threads around here, and while I'm all for quality content, his repeated failures don't disturb the grand cosmic order of horfuckery in the end
What is it that makes the telling of a story entertaining?
Urban Survival and Unique for example are both entertaining stories to read, even when you're going through the backlog. Res in particular seems like the kind of guy that'd keep a table at a bar entertained with some dumb story the normie fuck.
JAD and M&M's backlogs on the other hand have been described as slogs to get through. Which tells me that the telling of the them is less entertaining than the playing of the them for some reason.
Each of these quests are popular in their own right, so what is the difference of application that makes two of them a more entertaining telling?
Urban weaves in a bunch of stupid little jokes and references and shit plus just goes so over the top over the smallest things. Shoot a pony to death? No biggie. Shade ate your mango? End of the world
Well we put Sejor inside the stitched together remains of what is at least three mares. So it's a dude in a mare's body, and he isn't happy about it.
Obviously Sejor doesn't browse mlp
Because Hijacker likes making small mares smaller. Especially when they are the vessels of a mad god.
I don't think we want to stick our dick in something that is not only crazy, but also is 200% for genocide of all living things. The only reason Sejor was even stuck in the body is to get them out of the crystal we need. People are already talking about killing her as soon as she's in the body to save trouble.
I didn't say they were being smart anon. Part of the issue is that Sejor rustled alot of jimmies in amount of time he was around. Including permanently murdering another god for doing little more than helping our party with day to day adventuring.
Logic and edge don't play nice together.
That's true, but as long as there is no option to lock all the players inside that thread, throw away the key and slowly fill the thread with bad-tempered fire ants who were forced to listen to Attack! Attack! for 6 hours before, I don't like the idea of something like that floating around here. Yes, I am that autistic.
So apparently because I'm a glutton for making more work for myself than I initially set out to do, I've spent most of the night devising an upgrade system for the forthcoming airship cyoa. This is work in progress, but you can get the general idea of what's to be expected.
Oy, this'll take me all week to finish...
The airships don't run off your typical 'powder and ball' methods.
Instead the cannons are loaded with a magic-infused crystal, wherein the firing mechanism unleashes the magic housed within. So the cannons need to fitted with the proper runes to complete the spell trigger.
In addition, the ship has charging stations that can be used to replenish the magic in spent casing (drawing power from the ship's magic-crystal core). The upgrades allow you load crystals with the appropriate magic.
Your cannons literally shoot magic.
It probably is. I'm still looking to streamline things.
As I said, WIP, so it still has a lot of placeholder names.
>In addition, the ship has charging stations
What charges the charging stations?
Also holy shit, all that elaborate autism. But if you're the QM, that's a good thing. Having an autistic QM can be good at times.
A bit of autism, a bit of just hand-waving to cover up my arbitrary game-mechanic decisions.
Plus it's good to establish what the power levels are. I didn't want just vanilla cannonballs.
Also, the charging stations run off the ship's main power core, which doubles as the main engine.
I can't help but believe that your CYOA will utterly crash and burn.
Really, you're putting WAY too much thought and ideas into it. There seems to be so much one needs to think of right now that only the most hardcore CYOAfags will partake in that quest, while others will hate it because it's so complicated.
It seems overly bloated. I mean too many decisions isn't a good thing. I'd rather not argue about whether each and every cannon should be glue or lighting shot or whatever.
I think the issue is you're scaling it down too much. Forget about small stuff, just have the players decide what the cannons should upgrade (damage, range, penetration etc) And then have them decide what they sacrifice to get it.
So for example if they wanted to go all range then they could upgrade to long cannons, which are +range, +accuracy, -damage (because they take longer to load), and then buy penetration rounds, which are +range, +penetration, -damage (because they leave smaller holes).
The problem you're seeing here isn't overcomplexity or bloat. It's that you're laying out a system for us to look at and /mlp/ is scared of systems. Much like dice rolling you'll have better success if you don't show the system and just bring it up in the story.
Well depends on your airship. If you're a zeppelin then you just sorta float there until you deploy sails or fix the engines.
If you're ship uses special engines to provide propulsion and lift...then you retain all the flight properties of a fully-stocked vending machine.
Honestly, it's far less complicated than it looks. I'll probably trim a bunch of redundant things now that I think about it.
Pretty much. Crystals and the trade thereof will be a predominant theme in the setting.
The shot upgrades apply to all cannons. Again, it is probably more than I need so there will be trimming and revising. And while the idea of long cannons and penetration rounds were tempting, it feels incredibly mundane.
The problem is that your system just has players choose one thing and that's it. You get range, and fuck you if you want anything else, you'll have to change it, and pay for it, at the next opportunity.
You have a lot of options yet it feels very limiting.
weakness breeds ingenuity
no one wants to play a cyoa where we just braodside literally everyone becasue we have an array of fuck cannons and a dragon plated ship
itd be cute for one engagement, but then it would just get tiresome
I clearly am, considering he explained that cannons can use only one type of shot, and he's not interested in upgrading the actual cannons because that's 'mundane'.
You misunderstand. As soon as we pick something on this chart, unless we're willing to pay to go back in a different direction and waste our investment, most of this chart will just disappear.
Hrm...you may have a point there. Perhaps in my mission to allow for things to stay changing and interesting, I have inadvertently done the opposite.
It'll give me something to think about.
Just have a limit on how many you can do before the canons start getting unstable.
Hijack is literally the same situation every fight. I'd assume Innkeeper can vary the situations more since he's bound to go descriptive making it hard to do the same thing every time.
Your cannon can be modified to fire more than one type shot. I never said that cannons were limited to one type and one type alone.
If your cannons are upgrade to accept, say, lightning and fire shots. Then when the time comes to attack, you can choose which shells to load and fire. Hell, you'll be able to mix and match if you're so inclined. Or at least that's the plan.
Which has little to do with what I said. If you have different situations, you won't be able to just do the same thing over and over unless he allows it. Descriptive combat allows every situation to be vastly different.
The situations are different, but the options to approach them would be the same, that's the point. You can be as good as you want to write flavor, but it doesn't take away the fact that players don't have more options in the grand total.
You need to estimate the choosing capabilities of the players, and in my experience, if the main feature of a ship is "this", then the players will always go for "this" first and foremost, which in turn makes it harder for the QM to integrate his vision into it.
There is an easy solution to the problem of limited options: don't upgrade all the cannons the same way. We could have one of each kind of cannon on each side of the ship, and thus keep our options open.
The deeper issue at hand is that more work is being spent on designing systems then on character or plot. This worries me immensely.
>there isn't possibly just one thing a ship can do.
Probably. But that doesn't mean it's the only option, the best option, or an available option. Take Unique for example. Players heavily relied on the barrier spear but it wasn't used all the time. In one instance they dropped a catwalk on an enemy. When it was used it wasn't just dropped as a move, how it was used changed with the situation.
Doing the same thing every time is only an option if the QM allows it.
Well I haven't revealed much about either of those so it'd probably be hard for them to talk about it.
The general consensus I got from previous discussion is that people prefer the privateer route. So you will definitely be a privateer in command of your own ship. The setting will most likely be a slight AU of the canon setting so you'll have your familiar settings and people, though probably a bit of change-up in the geo-political landscape so that's reason for conflict.
I'd like to point out that I like Nip's latest combat event which used a bit of a mix. It was descriptive, but the players mixed descriptive actions with the old moves. The movesets/abilities existing predefined like that gives a nice overview of what each character can do, which then can be applied descriptively. Nina can do this, this, and this, and anything that logically follows from those predefined moves.
It was a very nice foundation for the fight.
I'm saying sorry to those people who were wondering about the Maneami Quest. I'll run it as soon as I'll possibly can. Just an update of sorts.
Yes, your ship can be fitted to do more than one thing. All I've shown is a glimpse at the potential firepower upgrades - I haven't even gotten into defensive or propulsion modifications. And by the way, there won't be numbers attached to these things - the mechanics will stay under the hood to the best of my abilities.
And it would certainly be in your best interest to keep your ship versatile, cause otherwise you'll be up shit-creek when you run into a challenge that'll eat your 'one thing' for breakfast.
I mean, sure you could get through a number of challenges just focusing on pure brute force. But no amount of brute force is going to help if you run into, say, a floating fortress that happens to be housing the glazed macguffin.
Anyways, its really late and I'm tired so I'm going to sleep. Feel free to keep floundering but don't expect answers from me.
Honestly, I would ditch upgrade trees entirely and just give the players a list.
What do you want to upgrade?
- Attack (costs x bits)
- Defense (costs x bits)
- Speed (costs x bits)
- Accuracy (costs x bits)
- Paint Job (costs x bits)
As long as versatility is an option then it's okay. I don't expect a ship that's good at anything, I just want one that can be good enough to do whatever the situation calls for, even if it's not the best at it.
Hijackdon't like linear upgrade paths.
Ech, fair enough, I guess. I suppose it is besides the point anyway, since I have already decided that I'm not going to be playing this one. All this talk of upgrade trees and systems has made it feel like air-JAD to me, so I'm out.
I wish you all the best with your airship CYOA, anons. Have fun, and let me know how it goes.
On a scale of 1-5, what degree of stat-basedness do you like in CYOAs?
The explanations are just examples, nothing iron-clad. Think of them as flavor text
>1 - Completely narrative-driven
Pretty much the only thing that matters is the plan the players came up with and the way the QM thinks would make for an interesting fight. There are no stats
>2 - Mostly narrative-driven
Still no real stats, but the MC may be for example "strong", so he would find it easier to accomplish strength-based actions - still no real stats, but the QM will base the outcome on whether or not the players have come up with a plan that matches the MC's build
>3 - Balanced
There are basic stats, but they're (mostly) hidden. More of an orientation for the QM, so if he thinks that a certain outcome will be better - narrative-wise - he may or may not decide to alter the outcome accordingly
>4 - Mostly stat-based
The MC has a variety of stats that can be increased/leveled up. Players can see all the explicit stats of the MC and maybe the enemy, so they will plan their actions according to the stats, but not every interaction has to be stat-based (like for example talking to an NPC and trying to convince him of something - the players would still have to come up with a plan)
>5 - Exclusively stat-based
A lot of stat for all relevant aspects. HP, Stamina, Strength, Magic, MP etc. etc.
Trying to convince an NPC of something? Well, what's your charisma and intelligence level? What level is his willpower? Roll [2d20+8], has to be higher than the enemy's [1d20+5].
Fights will be less of a narrative and more of a series of posts choosing attacks and rolling.
You can accentuate the fact that a character is "strong" or "dexterous" on purpose to make an underhanded notion to an stat system being there. It's a small distinction, but I agree with it not being completely narrative-driven. That would be when you simply don't have a stat system at all.
Well it was an example. "MC is an Earth Pony and therefore he's strong" would be more a case for 1, but "MC is a Pegasus and in addition to his natural agility, players made decisions - either during character creation or during the quest - that increased his strength. For example they decided to hit the gym frequently" would be more of a 2. Sure, both are in between, but as I said, the explanations are more of a flavor text, I couldn't think of great examples for all of it.
I dont even care that this is gonna get scrapped
this was really fun to make
Everyone's going off on you, but Space Quest had a similar upgrade process for our ship, and by and large it worked out pretty well.
The catch there was that we had a fixed number of things we could do to our ship. We could only fit so many guns, had to choose between armor and maneuverability, etc.
If you do this, I heavily recommend you force players tailor their style to an engagement instead of just offering all the upgrades at once. Say, we can only carry three types of ammo at once because reasons. Do we carry smoke ammunition to cover an escape from anything we can't beat, or special armor-piercing ones to try and take it out? Do we armor up to protect against the little weapons cargo ships would carry, and accept we won't have the speed to escape a true warship?
Make them strategize, instead of "ooh, let me get the new shiny thing".
The upgrade system, as I would see it is pick 2 for everything but Ordinance, where you pick 5, but equip 2.
Changing upgrades will put your ship out of comission for a bit as it get outfitted, crews change your effectiveness in certain aspects, and certain accommodations open your ship for events, etc.
Of course, its not my quest, and I have no idea how large the ship might be or how diverse the characters might get, so I kept everything relatively open.
>Mnh.. Anon, please press my vote button more with your finger.. it's so big and girthy..
Personally, I say we go full narrative based for airship upgrades. We go to our greasemonkey and ask if it's possible to add such and such to our guns. She says yes, but it'll cost X bits, take Y days, and require Z parts. Maybe we even get a quest out of it when we go to collect Z.
More like Sejor is a spirit thing that was made. IIRC, spirits don't have genders.
But yeah, I always saw him as a him, so he's a guy trapped in a frankenmare's body
That brings up a good question though. Is it gay to fuck a dude's vagina if there are no balls to touch?
Not many females are actually straight, but in almost every new quest there's an anon who goes 'It's always a mare, let's go stallion.'
Mares are in the majority, but it's really not that one-sided.
My theory is some people go for mares because
cuteand avoiding 'the gay'.
Then they go lesbian because mares
cuteand banging a stallion even as a mare still makes them feel a little bit gay.
Lots of mare MCs, probably 80%. A lot of these die quickly, so the archive is more balanced.
Not a single one is confirmed straight, which is why I really want Sharp to be straight.
Eh, I just want to play a certain character that we pretty much never get to.
I also kinda wanted Chalk Dust to be straight, but when pitch betrayed us flirting with Lovesick felt like a good way to get back.
Point is, the situation matters the most, obviously. So far though I'd rather her be straight.
Of course. This isn't a make or break thing, just what I hope gets voted for.
Long ago we had an amazing CyoA called My Little Persona, does anyone know if Igor (CYOA's Writefag) is running any more of them? It was literally the only CYOA that absorbed me completely.
Tho probably he just went full silence mode and nobody has heard a word from him ever since.
Igor posted in here a couple times, but Persona and /cyoa/ were almost entirely separate.
Persona never really got discussed, critiqued, or even mentioned over here save for a couple times, for some reason
look at this arrogant piece of shit. does anyone still wonder why nobody likes him does anyone wonder why some anon said he ruined sekrit club
fuck you wolvan. get out and stay out you god forsaken shithead
fuck you I was about to post that
Stats are less popular than I expected, at least the far end of the spectrum.
Okay I need a bit of help regarding Threshold. I was going to have the last day be the most difficult (naturally) and then have the game end with the date, but it looks like more than one or two people are unhappy with the notion of being on the last in-game day already.
The problem is that I'm kind of out of ideas. Moreso than usual, I mean. I was going to incorporate your past suggestions into Friday (today), what with it being the last in-game day and all, but beyond that I don't know what else there is that I can throw at you.
You've dealt with multiple anomalies, both safe and dangerous.
You've survived one containment breach and witnessed another.
You've recaptured an escaped anomaly (or part of one, at least).
You've gone out and captured one anomaly yourselves and assisted another.
And you've met pretty much every character I could come up with at least once or twice.
What else would you guys like to see? What would provide closure
until the sequel?
>deal with anomalies all fresh meat have to deal with
>see the moon become unicron which went absolutely nowhere
>faff about for large periods of time doing nothing
>actually lose time we could have spent observing other anomalies because of time fuckery
What about Squishy's past? What about the corrupted image of Ascii? What happened with the other ponies from the orientation? Will we ever figure out what the deal with Blazar is? Will Flare ever return? Will we ever get on Fortissimo's good side?
>What would provide closure
Dandu rising through the ranks and becoming one of the highest ranking officials in the threshold might be a nice way to end it since it turned into more of a slice of life thing and doesn't have much of an overarching plot. That'd probably take a while though.
There's a bunch of shit we don't know about yet.
You've introduced a lot of characters and implied some have interesting backstories like with Squishy, but we haven't really had time to actually learn about them, and there are quite a few anomalies we don't know much about yet too, like 888 and 106 and whatever's going on with the moon, and I thought I read somewhere that the sun had a file too for some reason, and you implied you had more somewhere.
You could probably turn it into an episodic quest and run an "episode" where we deal some new anomaly or problem and then take a break and run your other quests while you make up new shit to do for the next one, at least then we'd still have the chance to learn about some of the other characters or other anomalies,
and that database site I made won't have been a wasted effort with only a handful of anomalies on it.
Yeah I saw that the last time you posted it.
Most of that stuff would probably be covered in future installments since it was never actively pursued by the players, or in Blazar's case outright refused. And some of it
like Squishy's pastties in with something... bigger.
Human anomalies are a thing, but I worry that having an actual living one would just be too big of a shitstorm.
That's been the plan for months, since I realized there's no way I could seamlessly fit together all the stuff I was coming up with early on.
You know, after reading the discussion that this brought up. perhaps we should make a list of MCs and see how divers our gender split and sexualities are for MCs.
Napone Strait Male
Butternut Lesbian Female
Anonguard Strait Male
Blitz Bi? Male
REM bi Female
MuffinTop Lesbian Female
Cobb Strait Male
Quick Strait Male
Sunny bi Female
Mango bi Female
Emerald bi Male
Pot bi Male
Goof Strait Male
Gar Strait Male
Vex bi Female
Blue bi Female
Harvest Lesbian Female
Fruit Cuckold Male
Willow Strait Female
Steel bi Male
Tara Strait? Female
Then some MCs that don't have a specified sexuality
Ether Breeze Female
My list is incomplete and likely contains errors I just wanted to start one to show an actual idea of how it's all broken down.
>The medusae uses Nanomachines
Thought about doing one.
Would you guys be okay with one that's wrapped up in a sense of shonen bullshit nonsense?
Ridiculous shit happening, taking everything way too seriously, really weird and bizarrely powerful characters?
SoL yes, but closer to fantasy than even the show. Would anyone want?
> Etherbreeze has been in five threads
> No buttstuff
I AM ANGRY, ANGRY ABOUT
It's too bad that everyone including Inept has absolutely no interest in doing that.
Apologies for being so late, but would anyone be up for a few hours of Super?
There's a legs version
And a fish version:
She looked small in the pictures so I went with a filly sized version. Is she too small or is this ok?
How about a Brandy Byte and Cold File?
Running your quest and making all the many different scenes that would be required for it for it would help you improve your art a lot more than tediously trying to grind away all the little imperfections on just one scene. Since the tiny imperfections in just one scene are a lot less noticeable than any flaws that might or might not existed in your overall technique, which you will be able to pick up on a lot better if you're pushing out a lot of content, as you might not know what mistakes you corrected from that first scene you're meticulously trying to perfect are mistakes you make all the time, vs mistakes that were one-off unimportant details nobody but you will notice.
Etherbreeze references if you need them.
Seeing as we're apparently asking now, any chance of a Ruby one? She's the one on the right and has a 'light red coat with a firey red mane'.
This definitely. I know it's helped me out a lot so far. In fact that's one of the reasons I started my own quest. I make a lot of mistakes between scenes still, but I know I'm getting better overall. Great advice, anon.
I tried starting a ponyville map a while ago and tried not to nit-pick so much and use simpler methods just so I could actually finish something, but it's not working out that well.
I can't really just run the quest and make scenes on the fly, 3d shit takes too long to put together.
The fancy markings are a bit hard to do at this resolution
I need to know what they look like first
If you're doing QM ones now, I guess we could use a Nikkita and a PandaCraft
If we're going that far we might as well get a H&B style Panzer while we're at it.
What are other QM's personas?
Is slothtrot a very fast sloth?
I picture him as the 4chan "australian shitposter" for some reason.
What time -periods do your favorite CYOAs take place in?
As far as serious paper pone requests go, I think that the rest of Mendacity's cast could use some love.
