A fair amount of my writing time is actually spent simply planning out immediate events. When I write, I think to myself, "What do I want my players to do? What do I think they'll do? What could happen if I write this scenario out this certain way and what would I do then?"

I do have very general ideas for what a location is like, but even then that's subject to change. It's usually the little things that need to be improvised.

I might be doing it wrong, but I find QMing to be a lot of micromanaging to make sure you don't just write yourself into a corner.

I plan out more or less depending on how deep I estimate the quest lore will go, but I never start anything without some worldbuilding, character and event lists that I might end up using or not. I usually leave things open enough so that players help me fill information with their votes. Deviating from the plan due to unforseen votes is something I love, but always having a base to stand on.

I'd prefer to have some really basic upgrades that are obvious available to buy, but the cool stuff is taken from defeated ships.

The normal upgrades aren't improvements on what you have, they're just things your ship doesn't have yet (ram, emergency sails, air anchors, grapple launchers etc) that allow you to do new things without improving the other parts of the ship. To actually upgrade an existing part you have to actually hunt down and take a special version by defeating special enemies. Players would decide how they want to upgrade their ship by deciding which enemy sounds coolest.
So you've heard about an enemy ship that has cannons that can fire two different shot types at once, and another that has an experimental auto loading system that lets them shoot faster, and you have to decide which one you're going to go after, and how you're going to take them without destroying the ship or being destroyed.

I was pointing out that Changelings in general have not been shown to be able to shapeshift their bodies at will in the show, and not even in SS. If it was explained that Changelings in SS can do these things though it'd make more sense. Maybe his Mom is from a specific Hive who focus less on just morphing into ponies and deceiving them, but general shapeshifting.

But as of now, no such explanation has been given. As such we have no idea really what the extent of 'Changeling Abilities' are in SS.

Try this next time you gotta piss: Aim at the bowl and as long as you feel you got a good pressure, slowly back away, increasing your angle and see how far you can go, before you have to step closer due to the decreasing pressure.
