And best of luck to you. It's not as if anyone in here actually cares whether or not your game lives or dies. You just got made fun of when you choose cyoag to QQ all over when it got janitored.
Today, had to stay in work a bit longer than usual yesterday, the opening posts are ready, I'm just waiting for hours that are not early even for euros. Also, whoops, missed the fact we already switched to a new thread
How often are you forced to improvise? Do you prepare a library of characters, locations and world lore or you just come up with it on the spot and hope nobody notices a fuck up?
A fair amount of my writing time is actually spent simply planning out immediate events. When I write, I think to myself, "What do I want my players to do? What do I think they'll do? What could happen if I write this scenario out this certain way and what would I do then?"
I do have very general ideas for what a location is like, but even then that's subject to change. It's usually the little things that need to be improvised.
I might be doing it wrong, but I find QMing to be a lot of micromanaging to make sure you don't just write yourself into a corner.
I plan out more or less depending on how deep I estimate the quest lore will go, but I never start anything without some worldbuilding, character and event lists that I might end up using or not. I usually leave things open enough so that players help me fill information with their votes. Deviating from the plan due to unforseen votes is something I love, but always having a base to stand on.

>Dandy would already be dead if it wasn't for the magic mind voices.
That is an almost too perfect metaphor for Inept quests in general. A collective anonymous trying vainly to keep a pony alive who the universe is trying to kill.
What quests? Any quests? Okay.
I hope that Sharp Catalog rises through the ranks of the mafia and becomes Don Twitch.
I hope that Etherbreeze's dark secret turns out to be that she is batshit fucking crazy, and her twin sister is a hallucination.
I hope that Dandy figures out how to restore Squishy's memories and intelligence.
I'd be more excited if it didn't sound so JAD-like. I don't want to spend bits to purchase upgrades out of a tiered perk tree with a cross-referenced chart of prerequisites. I want to go "hey engineer, what parts do I have to steal so that you can make the ship go faster?"
I'd prefer to have some really basic upgrades that are obvious available to buy, but the cool stuff is taken from defeated ships.
The normal upgrades aren't improvements on what you have, they're just things your ship doesn't have yet (ram, emergency sails, air anchors, grapple launchers etc) that allow you to do new things without improving the other parts of the ship. To actually upgrade an existing part you have to actually hunt down and take a special version by defeating special enemies. Players would decide how they want to upgrade their ship by deciding which enemy sounds coolest.
So you've heard about an enemy ship that has cannons that can fire two different shot types at once, and another that has an experimental auto loading system that lets them shoot faster, and you have to decide which one you're going to go after, and how you're going to take them without destroying the ship or being destroyed.
That sounds awesome. I'd play that. I love the image of flying a mismatched jumble of stolen ship parts around, held together only by luck and whatever autistic engineering savant we managed to convince to join our crew.
I disagree. This isn't about gates. This is about reasonable progression. Your ship can already do plenty, and so can you. You just get things so you can do even more. The ship and it's capabilities are part of the plot.
If we start out being able to do anything in a CYOA about airship combat as a soldier or privateer then what's the challenge going to be?
How many CYOAs have you played where the MC gathers abilities as the story goes on?
Every time someone posts a picarto link, I click on it to see the spoiler and it starts loading secret club without my permission. Please stop spoilering the links. It's not even remotely secret.
Nah it's not like 11-54 where we'll respawn if we die. It's just that death doesn't really work in the city because
It's stuck in a time loop, and apparently ponies can be revived with Ambrosia if what Patchwork said early on was true. Though they turn into whatever the hell Patches is.We have 'reloads' in case we ever majorly fuck ourselves, but we've never had to use them.
>>Give advice on CYOAs
Continue being awesome.
Consider being awesome faster.
The cutie mark adjustment during our practicum was our fictional sister getting her cutie mark
I wish you would post when you think the next update might be at the end of updates. I five hour wait is a lot less difficult to stomach if I know it'll be five hours.
Nips should really stop turning Fruit Flank into such a fucking Mary Sue.
>Can turn his hoofs into all sorts of weapons and hands so he can use weapons others can't use
>He's suddenly become the MC in Prototype
First of all, update faster. Right now the CYOA feels more like a greentext story that something I have some control over. I think you should just outright explain some things like our family for one. I really wish there was more character interaction and you've taken a step in the right direction in that regard. Finally I hate your writing format, please, please, please switch to the more traditional greentext style.
>We just never bothered doing it because people just wanted to use the gun.
Which shows how much into anime Nips is.
>There's a gun that requires fingers to pull the trigger?
>Fuck that. Fruity can now turn his hooves into hands :)"
And that's just a small portion of the things that is ridiculous with SS.
He just plain refuses to put any limits to what his characters can do, and that's just bad.
So what you are saying is is that a half changing shouldn't be allowed to make use of his changling abilities because it's too anime? I'm not sure I undertand the complaint. I mean we've seen what happens when he tries to shape shift more than his hands. He nearly passed out. Yes, the party is pretty powerful, but no more than the setting requires. Just think of it like low fantasy settings versus high fantasy settings in Dungeons and Dragons. Shooting Stars is more of a high fantasy setting.
Changeling's powers have been 'turn into other ponies' though. Not 'Shape shift into pretty much anything you want'. None of the Changelings in the show used these abilities to fight.
>the party is pretty powerful, but no more than the setting requires
And Nips will keep changing it so that the characters are no more powered than what is required to defeat their current villain.
If he shifts into anything that's not within the shape of the main 3 races of pony, he can't maintain it for long, especially in combat. It's not that terribly overpowered given this game is full of fucking snowflake races instead of normal ponies, so it balances out.
Shooting Stars also has humans sir. Fruit Flank is only half changling and is incapable of turning into other ponies. What he CAN do is shift small pieces of his body.
I'm going to warn you now, that pointing out things that are not canon to the show in a quest here is a losing battle.
Because changing your entire bone structure is soo painless and easy, right?
Changing into someone else is one thing. Changing into an entirely different species that has a completely different bone structure is another. And if you give us the shit about Fruity being able to do it just because, then that just proves that Nips is turning his characters into special snowflakes.
SS is the Project Horizons of quest confirmed.
Look what the anon said:
>a half changing shouldn't be allowed to make use of his changling abilities because it's too anime?
I was pointing out that Changelings in general have not been shown to be able to shapeshift their bodies at will in the show, and not even in SS. If it was explained that Changelings in SS can do these things though it'd make more sense. Maybe his Mom is from a specific Hive who focus less on just morphing into ponies and deceiving them, but general shapeshifting.
But as of now, no such explanation has been given. As such we have no idea really what the extent of 'Changeling Abilities' are in SS.
Chrysalis can also only change into pre-existing ponies. No changeling has ever been shown to be able to turn into a pony of their own creation.
>pointing out things that are not canon to the show in a quest here is a losing battle.
Right, I completely forgot that this general is filled with genuine autists.
Changelings are able to turn into whatever they want to, even dragons.
Bats are all-powerful.
A single pegasus can destroy an entire village all on her own by summoning hurricanes!
The whole point of Changelings comes from replacing people anyway though. It doesn't make any sense they WOULD be able to change into anything they want.
See. This right here is why it's a losing battle. You present the issue, and when it gets countered you are unable to point at the tv show and use it as your bible, and then it devolves into insult throwing. “It isn't exactly like the TV show, I'm gonna call them autistic and take the thing I don't like and give an example of it taken to ridiculous extremes.”
Fruit Flank has never attempted anything so silly as turning into a dragon. Transforming his arms into claws like the ones on the first black fungus beast he fought alone takes a massive toll on him. He can mimic PART of another creature or pony, but not the full package.
>Bats are all-powerful.
Lily is a useful party member, but I'd hardly call her powerful. She's an alchemist and assists in combat by using the various books we've collected to point out weak spots on monsters. Alone she is fairly defenseless, which is why she is combined with Dullahan to round-out her effectiveness.
>A single pegasus can destroy an entire village all on her own by summoning hurricanes!
No idea what that specific complaint is about, but didn't Rainbow Dash almost destroy an entire village with a snowball nuke in the cartoon? Anything that can control weather is scary in my book.
Again, I'm not saying 'It doesn't line up with m-muh mythos so it's shit'. I'm arguing against the aforementioned anon's point.
>a half changing shouldn't be allowed to make use of his changling abilities because it's too anime?
I'm saying we have no idea what the hell Changeling abilities are in SS and it needs more explanation. It's like if you had a Medusa in your story, only instead of being able to turn people into stone, she could shoot lighting out of her tits. And you just roll with it like the readers should already know that Gorgons can do this even though in almost no other medium ever is this true.
>Finally I hate your writing format
> They actually took a suggestion/critique and DID it.
color me impressed, they changed their style a bit to accommodate the person complaining about the format.
>Character is shown to be able to do things thanks to heritage, it's explained that he can only do it badly because he's a half-blood.
>Instead of assuming every member of that race can do such thing in this world I'm going to complain and say I need more information.
Okay. This explains a lot about you familia.
speaking of it being like a green-text... I kind of like it. It feels like the main character is more of a character than just a flat 2D paper doll we are dragging around on strings.
>and use it as your bible
Then please do tell us when changelings were able to do the same things in the show that Fruity is able to do right now.
>She's an alchemist and assists in combat by using the various books we've collected to point out weak spots on monsters.
>She can suddenly crate a bag that can carry en enedless supply of items just like that
>which is why she is combined with Dullahan
>Someone who was brought back from the dead just because
>"DEUS EX MACHINA" is what Nips shouted right before he brought Dullahan back from the dead
>Responding to a counter with literally the exact same thing that was countered.
Doing the same thing over and over again with the expectation of a different result is insanity sir.
>She can suddenly crate a bag that can carry en enedless supply of items just like that
Stop trying to use the show as a bible sir. I've already told you that it's a lost battle. All you keep doing is ignoring the people telling you that quests don't follow show canon and demanding that we point out instances of what you dislike in the show.
If a quest doing things that aren't canon in the show really bothers you as much as this seems to. Perhaps you should make a quest of your own that follows 100% of things only shown in the cartoon.
What I'm saying is that the above anon's request is flawed; aside from the fact that the universe of the show and the CYOA are never explicitly stated to be the same, neither side can be proven (absence of evidence).
Regardless, this is a discussion of the past.
Whether or not it is canon to the show is irrelevant.
We're not playing something dictated by the rules of the show, we're playing something dictated by the rules of a CYOA, which has its own 'canon'.
You can kindly fuck off with the autism label. It's all autism in here. This is the rule, not the exception.
I have to disagree with you. Though Etherbreeze is a great character it's only been shown in little ways and for the most part she feels rather thin, more than likely because she puts on for other ponies.
The archive is designed to turn a quest into a story that can be read smoothly after the fact. Meta is great for fleshing out a world or giving context to active decisions but it constantly interrupting the reading experience is annoying.
Anyone who has played a pont'n'click adventure knows, inventory space in unlimited.
So from what I'm gathering from this Thread.
People want more things set in the Shooting Stars universe to help explain aspects of the world that are going unexplained due to the limited scope of Fruit Flank's direct experience.
I have lore for the whole world and several possible events in it.
It depends on locations. I have several pre-made ones, rest is improvised. Same goes to characters. Due to free will I do not completely plan immediate events. I sketch possibilities.
Anonymous would be the MC, Anonymous would be the designated love interest, Anonymous would be the love interest the gay agenda pushes for, Anonymous would have a ton of memes about him, and Anonymous would be offed early for being so autistically annoying.
The batpony and mothpony party members get along just fine. The two anon's representing the love of bats and moths each constantly fighting and trying to pit the two against each other, with it never working. The batpone and Mothpone end up making out at one point, sending the two anon's into a blind rage.
Copy image doesn't seem to work with gifs.
>Nips would be a necromage due to the whole lich thing.
>Hijacker would duel-class master-monk and alchemist so he could use all the items that he complains that his players don't use and pull off sick combos.
>Inept would be a support mage that has feats in trap recognition.
>Res would be a bard
>Coltshan would be a barbarian so he could do everything with brute force.
>Craft would be a cleric due to all of the lore he knows.
>And Amm would be the king that gives them the main quest.
Language barrier: the quest.
I'm surprised it survived two days with no updates, but Threshold continues!
So, it looks like I will be able to run Vampony tonight, however I feel like I've held the reins for a bit too long.
If any of the other QMs were planning on running, let me know.
If not, I'll run tonight.
Idea was too cute not to contribute.
Please remember to stand up at least once every hour for about five minutes. It's great for your circulation and helps negate the effects of sitting for prolonged times!
Dude what the fuck? It's not my fault you can't piss properly. You clearly need more practice.
Try this next time you gotta piss: Aim at the bowl and as long as you feel you got a good pressure, slowly back away, increasing your angle and see how far you can go, before you have to step closer due to the decreasing pressure. I made it to the door, which is about 1,40m (~4'7") from the toilet. It was such a beautiful arch and it all went where it was supposed to go.
Current airship status:
Main cast: finalizing details. Need more cardboard.
Plot: still hammering details out. Working through indecisiveness.
Mechanics: threw most of it out. Scaled down and simplified.
Tiny airship waifu: inflated. Still making tiny horse noises.
Launch date: hopefully this weekend.
Would you let tiny treads escort you in her tank?
>Mechanics thrown out
Please tell me we get to keep the pony cannon
Holy shit, they actually thought this would work and even sketched a prototype. The idea is nice and all but you can't just ignore air draft and make the most shitty non-aerodynamical plane and think it'd work.
Thanks for the source.
>players want to do something BUT it would out of character for the MC
if you were the QM what would you do?
Dis. You have more than the MC to work with when receiving suggestions, also.
Make him conflicted or have something happens that apparently gives him far less say in the matter.
Red is Brown
Across the Ocean
Aranges these in order of least edgy to the most edgy.
Then arrange them in order of least serious to most serious
The current order suits both categories.
Going purely off my gut and having acknowledged i haven't read most of these:
Across the ocean
It's mostly because I'm dealing with another QM's character and I can't hide my poor character writing skills with 'gameplay' right now.
I really hope I haven't fucked up his character since it seem like he put a lot of thought into her.
Mind explaining your rating for Vampony? I'm actively trying to retain the inherent edge in the concept, so I'd like to know if I've been successful in that.
For some of ones I read. A lot of this is kinda hard to judge though, hardly accurate.
Edge:going down least to most
Feels like this one's more subject to personal opinion than edge.
Statutory rape in Equestria? FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-
>Yeesh, blatant, constant, child rape is less edgy than Vamp?
Being ethically dubious doesn't make something edgy.
A story is edgy if it's dark because the author thinks darkness is cool. Edginess is when fiction embraces the moodiness and immaturity of teenage angst.
Colt Quest is self aware and very lighthearted. It might be full of pedophilia, but that alone doesn't make it edgy.
There's no gore or pedophilia in Sonic, but Shadow the Hedgehog is still considered edgy. He is supposed to be cool, deep and awesome because he's sullen, tragic and moody. It's this immature admiration of darkness that makes him an edgy character.
Please note that when I say "edgy" I mean it in the disparaging 4chan sense of the word — I don't mean the dictionary definition.
Etherbreeze was described as a genetic defect (her body is wired as a pegasus, it just fucked up), which makes her truscum, Wood Spire is described to 'feel like' he's a unicorn so the mental retardation makes him tucute.
Pony species dysmorphia is a real condition, anon. Quit triggering me.
I thought "tucute" meant that there's no real dysmorphia. AKA there's no actual mental problem, the person is "trans" without any diagnosis by any real psychologist. They're just "trans" to get oppression points, basically.
I think Ether is closer to IRL "intersex" people, while Wood is a truscum transfaggot.
You must have different definitions then the ones I found. When I looked up those words I got the following.
Truscum: believe that you are only trans if you want to become a different gender
Truscute: believe that you are also trans if you feel like you already are a different gender and do not need to transition
Truscum believe there needs to be dysmorphia to be considered 'trans' which is usually based upon biology. Their brain/chemicals/hormones/whatever don't match their sex. Your body is fucked up and needs to be fixed. Transitioning is what currently has the highest success rate for the cost.
Tucutes believe that as long as you say you're trans, you're trans because you can't shackle their feelings. And they don't like the oppression of medical definitions, which is why they truscum truscum. Since your body isn't fucked up, you don't need to transition.
Intersex will fall into the Truscum category if they need to transition.
Etherbreeze is a truscum, Wood is a tucute faggot.
That's not really what the word "intersex" means, even though some people use it like that.
>intersex (plural intersexes)
>Any of a variety of conditions (in a dioecious species) whereby an individual has male and female sex characteristics; the state of having the physical features of both sexes; intersexuality.
Hey, I just got home right now, and the most I could probably do before I HAVE to sleep is like 1 post. I don't really Think I should but my quest is kinda stuck in a limbo area at the moment that I should try to get out of. So should I one post tonight even though I don't think that will move the quest along far enough to get out of the weak prompt area or should I just draw something else for the thread tonight.
Honestly Hijacker I mostly enjoy the lighthearted sense of humor in your quests. I find your characters fun in the way that they interact with the world and some of the things that are in the world that compliment their actions add a lot of flavor to the settings.
Nothing ever comes across as too heavy or too serious which is really where the strength of your quests lie.
>big collage of sick airships
>tiny poner floating on balloon
I'm torn between designing a new one altogether and just overhauling the S.S. Tinypone into something more intimidating.
Better way to fix all this:
Takes place before NMM's return. They're one of the last remaining division of the nightguard that weren't abolished. Tasked with doing Luna's dreamwalker duties and occasionally dealing with Nightmare Moon using her own powers to invade the dreams of some ponies and manipulate them in their dreams, along with other magical creatures that like to fuck with dreams.
>A degenerate batpony could be fucking your waifu in her dreams right behind your back
No wonder bats have been genocided in the show.
I actually had an idea like that for some time
It would be after the whole Tantabus ordeal after which Luna decides she can't remain the only one to be knowledgeable about dream magic, and decides to test training some of her guards to support her in her dream duties.
So we recently had a couple of our longer quests wrap up quietly. With over 200k words and over 1k posts each both Mazes and Medusas and Space Vex have finished their quests.
I want to thank Hero and Space Bug for crafting their adventures for us to participate in even though crappy writing mistakes and retarded players. If they hadn't JUST 7 months ago then we would have a little bit less horse fiction to obsess over and compulsively whine about. So thank you. And always remember: Not everyone is bound to succeed. But you both managed to skate by by the skin of your teeth and finish what few faggots dare to dream.
Could combine both ideas. Dreamwalker guard existed before, but was abolished when Luna was reformed since there didn't seem to be any need for them. After the Tantabus thing though, Luna decides to try and reform it.
The MC is one of the last recruits and technically was a part of the Dreamwalkers. He/She just joined literally 1 month before NMM escaped though and wasn't even complete with training.
>make a joke about the talk in discussion
>shitstorm explodes and it becomes a meme
