Are wisdom and ascendance mutually exlusive?
Is he the only one who saw the light? Or a pseudo-intellectual sophist?
I tend to believe the latter after reading him.
>mfw men have yearned for the perfect philosophical system for millennia and in the end it's a slick non-professional philosopher pied-noir who gets there first
I'm currently reading The Recognitions and randomly stumbled across information about the 1939 World's Fair in New York (Gaddis would have been 17 at the time). They had a time capsule there intended to be opened in 5,000 years, and some of the items included are a Mickey Mouse watch, a Kewpie doll, and a pack of Camel cigarettes. Could this be an influence on items included in his novel? Have any of you found anything similar?

your amnesia is partial. maybe there are some things you want to forget. like when you said, looking at me, "there are some very pretty girls whose faces don't look substantial or real enough for you to love them." well, you never wanted me to be real. that was the trouble.
Has there ever been a bigger gap between the quality of the beginning and the ending in a novel?
What are some /lit/ essential reading companions?
So far I have:
>Roget's Thesaurus
>Oxford English Dictionary
>A book on trees
>A book on birds
I'm seeking books that will expand my future reading and rereading experiences in this vein.
