Why is Beowulf basically compulsory for undergrads?
It's not
>>9583153
It's p important for our culture in general. More relevant than the illiad for contemporary culture.
Unless you think fantasy isn't an important facet of western culture.
I was thinking of getting this along with Grendel.
Thoughts on Anthony 'Alex "Icycalm" Kierkegaard' Zyrmpas? What's his endgame?
getting another of his pointless shill threads beleeted would be my guess

Have you ever related to someone from the Giver, like Jonas? Why or why not?
>>9583049
I never read The Giver because it was for the middle level reading group in my 7th grade class.
>>9583270
Well I think you missed out personally. It is by no means something one should be reading at the level you are probably at today, but I think the message it conveys and the feelings it invoked are well worth the read. A society without feelings and where everyone has a role but no personal thoughts is an interesting idea and the Giver explores it well.
remember the part where they euthanized the baby? that's literally me

This man is like a machine. How does he manage to keep writing books when he's been dead for over 40 years? It's amazing.

Psychology is the queen of the sciences; the quantity of *ressentiment* within an individual is the *decisive* factor in determining (causing -or- investigating) which side they take on any single issue, which choices they 'make' and which they don't.
Question: So why is this concept, 'ressentiment', not in everyday usage, a century after its crystallisation?Answer: Ressentiment ;)

>what is better, orange juice or apple juice?
>orange juice
>Resentful faggot!
kys
>>9584797
That example is factually true. Someone not tainted by ressentiment would answer "stop being a binary abstract faggot and drink both or seek to understand your preference" because the subject-object relation of said case is determinable at least in principle (genes affect taste, personal experience such as being raped with an apple might as well, the present bodily state aka what creates mood also does, etc.) and giving a personal answer to the questioneans believing in the priority of the self and is therefore a form of otherwordly ressentiment (as opposed to other forms of egoism which are based on the soul as plurality of selves). Of course stupidity and ignorance are not ressentiment, but they are a perfect ground for it.

None of his novels are political. Go for Mysteries, then Pan, OP.

>...as I watched the branches of the beech trees being moved around by the wind, tossing out a few small birds here and there, a divination came to me with such blazing and spontaneous alacrity it pretty well blew my mind. However, the sensational mode by which the latest idea came to mind was in fact nit the least but dazzling or unprompted but was rather the sort of consolidated outcome which is typically produced when a protracted and halfhearted analytical process aggravates the superior auspices of an exasperated subconscious. Consequently, the emanation's illuminating glare softened soon enough, enabling me to continue looking at the trees while at the same time according the contents of this most recent development a privileged yet manageable place among my thoughts.

simple question: is she catholic?
okay boys do I need to prepare for this or just dive in? is it 'difficult' because it's hard to parse, or just because of its dense references?
you have to 'read' 'it'
>>9582124
It's not particularly hard. You can go to google and Gaddis anotations every time you want. With that and taking note of the names of the characters you can read it without problem. Wonderful book, btw. Benny best character.

I'm a notorious cynic with regard to the internet. What are some books/studies that delve into how the internet is altering communication?
To explain further, it seems that there's been a big change in the way we talk to one another. We've shifted away from writing long, well-thought out posts towards essentially reacting with single sentences and humourous emojis.
Newspapers and Twitter soundbites dominant the airwaves. The ubiquity of Facebook, Snapchat, Whatsapp, and Instagram means we're communicating more often but at a much shallower level. Is real talk over? Will people ever feel comfortable having a deep and meaningful conversation ever again? Why do millennials accept every other issue but refuse to see this one? Do you even use the phone to talk?
I read Nicholas Carr's book The Shallows a while back and it was excellent but I want MORE.

What is /lit/'s opinion on Saint John's College?
PEL general?
Current Johnnie on summer break here. It's really intense but really rewarding. For anybody who's thinking of applying, keep in mind that it is a very small school, so if you don't click with people socially, you'll have a hard time in and out of class. Also, a lot of Johnnies become very stressed about leaving the 'Johnnie bubble' because St. John's is very much its own world. That being said, all of the students there are very passionate about reading and analyzing texts, so its a haven for that. However, it is lacking in other things typical of colleges.

Is art something that can be taught/learned?
Yes and no. Little baby Adolf and little baby Magritte might be taught the same curriculum and acquire the same knowledge but graduate with different skill levels or insight. All other social, cultural and developmental factors are also important in ways that are extremely difficult to correlate and replicate.
>>9581700
yes, art is merely a technic
aesthetics are innate tho
>>9581700
Technique, theory and history can. Creativity probably can't.

I want to read the most absolutely crushingly sad novels that deal with the failure of love so I never accidentally forget and start dating again. Please help me find such novels.
idk probably Stoner by Williams
definitely Jude the Obscure
also definitely try The Professor's House by Willa Cather
>>9581450
Victoria by Knut Hamsun
>>9581460
Thanks.
I guess also I will read any genre on this subject. Doesn't have to be novels, not sure why I was so specific in the OP. Just so long as it is crushingly sad and deals with failed love, I'm in. I just tend to read more fiction than poetry/drama/non-fiction.
