Jews don't consider their holy texts to be infallible, nor do they treat them as history. They're the story of the Jews relationship with their god, so the fact that large parts (all of it) are fiction doesn't matter, theologically speaking.

For ~40 years Israeli archeologists have looked for evidence of Exodus, and found nothing. Most Israelis consider the whole story to be a myth, personally I think it's the story of Moses and the Levites, who came from Egypt to rule over the other tribes (who were already in Israel, since they were just regular Canaanites before they converted to Moses' religion).

I think the problem with looking back at controversial topics is it's impossible to poll true public opinion on it. I don't believe a majority of North Americans (looking at too Canada) are thin-skinned knee-jerk closet xenophobes, but you wouldn't know it looking out the present state of society. Same thing. I doubt pederasty was ever widely accepted in any of those cultures.

It's very important but in a way that is extremely complex and difficult to predict. Jungles are shitty, for example, but there have been a bunch of advanced civilizations in jungle. Deserts are also bad but of course three of the four ur-civilizations arose in deserts. Europe is too cold and wet but of course it today dominates the globe. Really almost anything you can say about how climate shapes cultures can be disproven with a counter-example.
