Why does Western media always talk about the Tiananmen massacre but not the Gwangju massacre? Both happened in the same decade and resulted in thousands of protesters deaths.

Bump
A bias perhaps?
South Korea is US ally, so media will be more biased.
They remember what happened in Vietnam with the burning monk event. They don't want a repeat of that to take place and topple the US puppet state again

Hmmm thanks for the answer

>inb4 someone says "but those were leftistds!!!"
Actually, nobody saw Korea positively up until very recently.
My Grandad who was based there once called it a "junta shithole."

When I lived there in the 90's it was a """"""""""democracy""""""""
Still is.
Asia honestly doesn't have one true democracy.

They were commies!

Like others said. Besides that China is USA's enemy and South Korea an ally, Americans read TAM as a chance to turn China to pro USA while they read Gwangju as anti American.
Also, TAM created exiles. Exiles have to work with foreign media to create stories to feed themselves.
After Gwangju those people got some state recognition and can go back to South Korea.

Taiwan?
China is a One-Party "Communist" country, Japan is a Parliamentary Oligarchy effectively, NK is what it is and SK is a mess.

Taiwan is like Korea

But a lot of Chinese dissidents live in China

Taiwan does have a psuedo-democracy. Let's not kid ourselves. The KMT-controlled military and intelligence community would coup detat the fuck out of any too pro-China or too-independent government.
