The art is great and the story is pretty much straight forward. What are you on about?

Illustrators get looser as they get older, the little things that used to have to be perfect aren't as pressing when you've already made the money

Both are great, but they're going for different things. The original Hellboy was Mignola attempting to make a name for Himself by showing his skill, while by In Hell where he's already established as one of the greats he's focusing on atmosphere and style.

The Ending, particularly with the shapes from the Magician and the Snake, deals with the fact Hellboy's journey is over. He's fufilled the prophecy while subverting it (By emptying Hell not to to destroy Earth, but to allow the souls to ascend to Heaven as shown by the device of white birds ascending present throughout Mignola's work ) and finally gets a chance to rest.

There's supposedly some old rule in Hollywood writing that audiences only care about things where the entirety of the protagonist's world is going to get destroyed.

This usually translates to the city the movie or show takes place in getting destroyed, or the Earth in shows or movies that don't take place in a single city or take place in space.

Cities occupy a pretty magical place in our collective psyche. They're big enough to be a setting all on their own, but still feel like a singular, tangible community, with its own unique energy and importance. The tv shows are just tacking on to a long line of city based fiction.
