Hey guys, does anybody have any Veterinarian stories or experiences they'd like to share?
I've gone to college for two different programs and disnt lime either of them. I think being a vet might be the right fit for me but I dont really know what its like and i want to be sure before I sign up for loans. Here's a pic of my cats as kittens as tribute.

I'm OP so I'll start, not a nice story though.
>Be me
>16
>Have a wire haired daschund that's been with me since I was 5
>For a weiner dog this guy is ferocious, would kill bunnies and shit and bring his trophies home
>Was my best friend, he would sleep with me in my bed every night
>FF and he's gotten old, but still has a lot of fight in him
>Survived getting hit by a car, got up after a few days like it was no big deal
>After a while though age catches up on him
>Starts getting tumors all over his body and cataracts, you can twll he's having a hard time
>Mom and I decide that it's time, take him for one last trip to the vet
>She comes in and I look at him
>Cantdoit.jpg
>I leave the room and my mom stays behind while I go to the car bawling
>My mom comes back and tries to comfort me, but all I can think about is how I abandoned my best friend when he needed me.
If i could go back in time to do one thing I'd go back into that room and see him off, he deserved that at least.
Ask to shadow at local clinics. Most vets will eagerly and gladly take on shadows.
I was pre-vet, but switched to veterinary technology after realizing techs get far more interaction with patients and far less paperwork.

Thats smart, theres a few around here i could try to get into.
So do you operate the machinery like xrays or are you like an assistant?
Ok so some people in my area found this good boy and I am caring for him temporarily.
The problem is that I'm noticing things that do not seem ok to me about him physically. First he squeals when you touch his hips, shuts down, tail between his legs, terrified if you touch him there. Found this out by helping him up on the couch, also by gently nudging his leg telling him to not pee there (right outside my door). If he's just laying down he trembles when you touch his legs, I squeezed gently, but he didn't complain at all, just wanted to be pet. Not sure if he's scared because it's a different house and he doesn't know us or actually hurt. He's been lost for over a month now. What made me write about this just now is that he came up on the bed but cannot get comfortable. Stands up and repositions constantly, ended up getting off and going on the floor.
Also, the more alarming thing is that his pupils neither dilate properly or seem to reflect light properly. He also has two spots on his left eye, not white spots.
He's a 2-3 year old, seems to be a labradoodle, sweet af, I intended to keep him, but one of my dogs is getting possessive of his toys (not too mean, but just growly enough) and the other who is an absolute angel will growl at him and stand between us (more protective than menacing) if the new dog playfully growls at me while we're playing. Not sure how to handle these things, since usually my dogs are very welcoming of others, but it doesn't feel like that with him. Also he is not neutered. He's got an appointment for it in 10 days, soonest they could find. Pic related, he's a good boy.

Here's another pic of his pupils in bright room light
Dilated to the max and weirdly reflective or maybe it's just me
>>2473042
He might have hip dysplasia. Only a trip to the vet's can tell you.
>>2473042
He probably has hip dysplasia or really bad arthritis and detached retinas or corneal opacities. The latter can be treated in some cases. Take home to the vet and find out for sure though.
>tfw the family cat finally died
Finally my house won't smell like shit
Not if you're still living there.
>>2472687
At least that fleabag isn't.
See you in hell Mr.Whiskers
you'll have to clean it if you don't want it to smell like shit.
the war against creepy crawlies!
I am the alpha predator in my home which finds itself overrun with cave crickets, spiders, and centipedes.
my arsenal includes a standard swatter for hand to hand encounters, an electric one for preemptive sneak attacks, and a heat gun when standard fire power simply isn't enough
my newest inclusion is peppermint oil. I hate the smell of this stuff but supposedly it keeps them away, The problem is I am seeing WAY more of them now so I think it's just bringing them out of hiding.
I have taken to hitting them with the oil directly which kills them in a few minutes. I'm not sure if its the peppermint doing something to them, or if the oil is preventing their respiration. Either way it works
Go around the house with pollyfilla and seal every crack and crevice. Block every crack and hole you can see.
Get peppermint oil and put it in a spray bottle with some water and lightly mist over the corners and bottoms of windows and doors etc.
Apart from that you can get a cat? Mine has fucking eagle eyes and eats insects for fun. It even eats dead ones it finds. It's a true hero
clean your house you fucking wierdo

Catfag logic everybody
I was delivering stuff to my grandma's house because mine flooded when I saw a turtle on the road. Not wanting to have it get run over I picked it up. After I inspected it I noticed it had a broken shell. What should I do?
Sorry if this bord isnt for this stuff I dont really come here.
>>2472645
wildlife rehab center or vet
>>2472648
Ok, I'll try to call a place.
It doesn't look too bad but yeah, a vet or wildlife place will fix it up with some turtle safe epoxy. If there is more damage under the shell they may have to wire the shell back together.
What do you do about a cat that's trying to "adopt you" when you aren't in a position to adopt it?
This little girl(?) has been hanging outside my work (night security) all night the last few weekends. She's very affectionate (always pushing her body against my leg; when I lower my hand to pet it, it stands up on its hind legs to reach her head to my hand; climbs onto benches I'm sitting on to nuzzle me; stuff like that) and definitely not afraid of me or hostile.
Problem is that I think it's getting too attached. She sits outside my office all night every night meowing for me and she's getting very insistent about trying to get into the building. So what's the best course here?
I've never had a cat before and I'm going to be going back to school in a few months, so I'm not in a position to adopt it myself. Still, she seems fairly healthy and is probably the friendliest cat (stray or pet) I've ever met and I'd be willing to put in a small effort in helping her find a new home.
Is there a cost-effective way to do this? Is taking it to a shelter even really an option? Should I just chase it off so it leaves? I don't want to be mean to it, but I also don't want to "lead it on." I'm only here three nights a week and I'm not going to buy food for it, let alone take it to a vet and pay for shots and spaying/ neutering. So what to do?
(Apologies if you guys get this kind of thread all the time, I've never lurked or posted on this board.)
OP here, still here with my bud, but I'm going off-shift for the week in a couple hours.
Taking it to a shelter is definitely an option, but I wouldn't worry so much about leading it on. It's a cat, and you're probably looking too much into its mannerisms. You can just enjoy eachother's company as usual.
If, eventually, your schedule changes so you won't see her anymore, you can call some shelters and find her one, if you care enough about her. That's what shelters are for. Some of them, anyway.
>>2472470
I hope you're right. Never seen a cat act like this, though. Seriously, I do 12 hour shifts and she just shows up a half hour after I arrive and sits outside the door all night waiting on me.
It is sweet, she's always stoked whenever I go outside and hang out with her a bit, but it's an issue that she keeps trying to run into my building when I open the door. It's not my trained pet and I can't be sure it will do what I say. Hence my concern and desire to do something rather than just let it be.
But eh... effort. I guess I'll just deal with it if it becomes an actual problem. Thanks for your insight.
I'm glad these things are going extinct. What a dumb fucking fish.
>hurr durr gonna slash at you underwater
>Has to physically hit his prey to kill it
>not using literal sonic booms
No fucking wonder this fish is too retarded to survive.

Now, we all see threads on our favorite animals, but very seldom do we discuss the big question: What animals do you just absolutely fucking hate, and why?
i'll start.
Hamsters.
They live like maybe a year, are little assholes who will bite the shit out of you just for the fun of it, and make a weird growl/hiss sound when they get mad.
They're stupid pets and you should feel bad for owning one.
Cats are terrible pets for terrible people.
>>2472231
welp
cats and pigs, cats are evil and terrifying and pigs are just disgusting they eat their own kids
what vaccinations do your dogs usually get, and how much do you pay for it? location also if you dont mind.
also i'm seeing stuff saying that parvo, distemper, and adeno aren't annual anymore, but 3 yrs like rabies now.
have you encountered that? i've always just done a combo shot purchased annually from a feed store, so i did all vaccinations except rabies (because legally can't) myself. do vets usually only do these every 3 years now?
do you do those every 3 years, then lyme/lepto/bordetella yearly?
its a hassle for boarding/renting now that i dont live in the country on land, bc boarding places want documented proof and so do apartments often.
>>2472096
Just go to the vet, shits not even expensive.
I took my dog when he was up for all his shots and it was like 3 shots and some heart medicine along with the physical for 80 bucks.
this was on a military base though
>>2472198
>Just go to the vet, shits not even expensive.
$60 for 3 vaccinations vs. $10 for 9 vaccinations in a 9-way booster from a feed store. Piss off.
I grew up working with livestock. I have been stabbing needles into all sorts of animals since I was a child. Small vets are a rip off for "routine" care. The only benefit is documentation/respectability.
That "heart med" assuming you meant heartworm med, is just overpriced and less accurately dosed ivermectin-- the same exact stuff given to livestock for the prevention of parasites, which you can buy for $25 (see: sheep drench) and have it last 5 or more dogs well over a year. Only difference is it is stuffed into a meaty treat, less accurately dosed (you do cc per body weight with the liquid form, instead of generic "50-70lbs"), and costs $10-$20/month per dog vs. like forty cents/month/dog.
We post pugs and why we love them.
sick ugly dogs for sick ugly people
They're adorable, but I'd never own one. I feel genuinely bad for the shitty lives they have
Vets love pugs the most because they are so cripplingly unhealthy that they are just like a walking and barely breathing check
Need your advice, /an/
How much dirt is needed to bury a cat? My cat was euthanized a few days ago and she's in the freezer currently. I rent on the top floor without a yard so I'm thinking about buying a planter. Size doesn't matter and cremation is not an option, I just need to know what size planter to get. Think something big enough for a fruit tree would work?
Catfag logic everybody
>>2471959
>cremation is not an option
why
Some cities have public pet cemeteries if you're really set on burial. Look around online.
I live in the foothills area of northern California. Last year I bought a pack of milkweed seeds to help out the Monarch Butterflies. The plants matured by early summer but nothing ever came by. Am I not on the migration path or not I planted them in the wrong time? Pic unrelated

I've rescued this little girl from her mother yesterday, her mother just killed every single one of her puppies and ate them, luckly this one escaped in time and her mom will be putted down. However, she got hurt, and she have an wound in her forehead with some secretion and a little swelling in the back of her head. Can I medically treat her in home? If so, how to? I need some help, pic related, it's her
She's 2 months old maximum, if that helps.
>>2471868
take it to the vet dumbass
Sounds like a nasty case of "take it to the vet"
How do I avoid getting a boring cat? I've never owned one before but the last thing I want is a cat that's antisocial and hides all the time. Is there an easy way to tell which cats are actually worth having, or do I just have to take a chance and risk getting one that doesn't actually want to be around people?
As the owner of a somewhat antisocial cat I think it's just something they do with people they don't know, not with their owners. My cat (sadly, I'm trying to teach her otherwise) is a delight with me - funny, playful, vocal and cuddly, but tends to hide if someone she doesn't know enters the house, and takes a while to warm up to them.
As long as you're kind to your cat and make it feel safe and happy around you then I'm sure you can be great friends, but it might not be as keen on meeting new people.
You could always see about adopting an adult cat, though, since that's always less of a gamble - shelters will say which cats seem to be more comfortable meeting new people, if having a super-social cat is important to you.
get domesticated cat, not ex-stray cat
>>2471792
>Believing shelters
They will say whatever they need to in order to push those animals out of there.
>>2471793
I adopted my car from the local shelter who had a litter in the wild, and she's the sweetest thing ever. However, the other cat we got from the shelter is a little pussy and runs from everything, but really loving towards my wife and I
It really seems like it's a gamble with cats.
I have no idea what this is but I am assuming it's a winged waterbug, which I thought was illegal.
