New Zealand River Given Legal Human Status

North Island's Whanganui River has been granted the same legal rights and privileges as a human being. The peculiar move follows more than 160 years of legal wrangling between New Zealand's authorities and the native Maori people who have long fought for the river's rights. Their success means that the interests of the river will now be represented by two people - one a member of the Maori tribes and the other a Crown official.

"I know the initial inclination of some people will say it's pretty strange to give a natural resource a legal personality," said Chris Finlayson, New Zealand's Treaty Negotiations Minister. "But it's no stranger than family trusts, or companies or incorporated societies."

The court's decision has certainly been a cause for much celebration among the Maori.

"The river as a whole is absolutely important to the people who are from the river and live on the river," said Adrian Rurawhe, a New Zealand MP who represents the Maori people. "From a Whanganui viewpoint the wellbeing of the river is directly linked to the wellbeing of the people and so it is really important that's recognised as its own identity."

Boaty McBoatface Prepares for First Mission

The humorously named research submarine is preparing to venture beneath the waters of the Antarctic.

Perhaps the best known example of why asking the public to name something is a bad idea, the small yellow robot submarine acquired its peculiar name after the public were given the chance to vote for what to call the Natural Environment Research Council's new research vessel. While the ship itself eventually ended up being named RRS Sir David Attenborough, its robotic submarine was assigned the unusual moniker to satisfy the result of the public vote.

Boaty McBoatface is now set to embark on its first ever mission which will see it descend to depths of up to 3.5km beneath the Orkney Passage to the south of Chile. It is hoped that its findings will help scientists learn more about the effects of global warming.

"The Orkney Passage is a key choke-point to the flow of abyssal waters in which we expect the mechanism linking changing winds to abyssal water warming to operate," said Professor Alberto Naveira Garabato. "We will measure how fast the streams flow, how turbulent they are, and how they respond to changes in winds over the Southern Ocean. Our goal is to learn enough about these convoluted processes to represent them in the models that scientists use to predict how our climate will evolve over the 21st century and beyond."

Death and Burial in Venice: What Does the Floating City do with Its Dead?

The city of Venice, known primarily for its 26 miles of weaving canals and waterways, is situated among 117 small islands in a shallow lagoon in Northern Italy. You can’t dig too far without hitting water, and real estate is limited, but the dead were buried within the city for years in what became known as campielli dei morti, or “little fields of the dead.”

Eventually, though, Venetians needed somewhere else to go with their mortal remains.

The small island of Sant’ Ariano, a remote islet only accessible by a desolate winding route through shallow channels and mud flats, was once home to a Benedictine monastery where nuns from the most distinguished Venice families lived before environmental decay drove them to nearby Torcello. In 1565, long abandoned by that point, the island was sanctioned by the Venetian Senate for use as an ossario. It became a dumping place for remains that were being removed from the city’s cemeteries to make room for new burials, and was in use for over three hundred years. By the time the island was finally closed in 1933, a layer of bones three meters deep had amassed within it’s stone walls, which can still be found today beneath the thickly overgrown brush.
