Gen 2 added held items as well.

Gen 2 added the most good stuff. Gen 6 added a fair bit as well. I love 5, but it didn't add that much, and a lot of the stuff in 7 wasn't very good.

Gens 3 and 3 added important gameplay elements too.

With the exception of fairy, abilities and the split, all the other ones after Gen II are just useless gimmicks barely touched in each generation.

Gen II's gimmicks on the other hand added the depth that created both the competitive and shiny hunting scene. Pretty big deal imo.

While its design is pretty shitty, it has two of the best types in the game and solid defensive stats going for it. In-game at least, it's a really solid starter pokemon.
