Gen 2 added held items as well.
Gen 2 added the most good stuff. Gen 6 added a fair bit as well. I love 5, but it didn't add that much, and a lot of the stuff in 7 wasn't very good.
Gens 3 and 3 added important gameplay elements too.

With the exception of fairy, abilities and the split, all the other ones after Gen II are just useless gimmicks barely touched in each generation.
Gen II's gimmicks on the other hand added the depth that created both the competitive and shiny hunting scene. Pretty big deal imo.

Didn't have genders either. You could get genders by trading them to Gen 2 though via the time capsule. Doing this gave you held items as well.
