>>
Try not playing D&D.

Because in LotR, wizards were recognized as being unfairly overpowered and so were something that normal men couldn't be.

Other fantasy settings' failed to recognize that letting players either be a mundane warrior or a fantastically powerful mage that can warp reality was always going to cause a tremendous imbalance in the agency of different party members, and that failure has damaged fantasy RPGs irrevocably.

So I'm creating a homebrew in cooperation with my group as I am gming the final days of our shadowrun campaign. The goal is to create a deadly, classless system for a weird fiction campaign.

I've been going over various Initiative systems to get some playtests going. After some fiddling around, I am now thinking about getting rid of "combat turns" alltogether and instead make every weapon, spell and action have a "tick count". The basic idea is as follows

>Attack with a longsword takes 18 - Finesse ticks
>Can only be parried during this time
>Parry gets a negative modifier equal to the amount of already passed attack ticks
>Parry takes weapon speed - Finesse ticks
>Failed attack or parry takes roll difference ticks to rebalance before any other action

What do you think?

Sounds like a pain in the ass to keep track of, both for the GM and the players. Just keep combat turns, they're fine.
>>
>>54855696
Feng Shui has this kind of tick count.

It is indeed a pain in the ass to keep track of unless you're doing a sword-fighting simulator.
>>
Here's a test OP. Describe one "round" of combat with four PCs vs four NPCs. PCs have fast guy with two daggers, strong guy with large club, balanced guy with a halberd, and a dexterous guy with a bow. They're fighting two troll type monsters with greatclubs and two goblin type monsters with makeshift weapons. Add as much parrying, blocking, and dodging as you feel like it.

Stick close and form up, men! Neat and orderly, just the way I like it!

Now then, I know that it has been quite some time, since you all last received jungle death world survival training. As such, I have good news for you all. As you can clearly see all around you, this is most definitely, a jungle death world! As such, you may all consider our stay here, a refresher course on the matter.

At any rate, Segmentum Command has ordered us to this world to retrieve... Something... They weren't exactly clear on the matter. But I'm sure that with our skills, and a little blessing from the Emperor, we'll be able to find and retrieve it, in his glorious name!

Now then, with that being said, and considering there are no vicious predators, or man eating plants the size of a Leman Russ battle tank around us, I believe that now would be a great time to take a break, while commiting ourselves to a mandatory fielding kit inspection.

As such, all guardsmen! Present arms and equipment for a Field Kit Inspection!

>Welcome to ''Field Kit Inspection", home of the 'Unknown Regiment". Feel free to join in! Remember though, we tend to use spoilers for OOC chat, while greentexts for are used for describing a character's actions. D20s are for combat checks and d100s for other things you wish to roll, with higher being better.

Third Company, reporting in! I took the liberty of sending a few of my men to scout ahead, a few moments ago.

Other than an abundance of man eating birds, the size of Hercules half trucks, that shoot out poisoned barbs the size of a man's arm, and are capable of slicing through Leman Russ armour plating. There isn't much else ahead that could kill us.

What does /tg/ think about Guild Ball?

I am a big fan. Locally it's really gaining traction, especially since WMH collapsed after Mk3. We get about 10-12 people on GB night.

Pros:
>only need to paint a handful of models per faction so the game has a really small buy-in.
>3x3 table space makes it easy to play on kitchen tables, all in all a really manageable game.
>Very deep tactical nuance thanks to playbooks and individual model complexity.
>Simple mechanics to remember.
>Internal and external balance blow games like 40K and WMH out of the water.
>Alternating activations makes for much more interactive gameplay.
>League play is very fun.

Cons:
>Learning curve is really steep beyond the basics. Getting a feel for a given guild's strategic options takes a while because of model complexity.
>Scale is static, and you will never have a larger game than 6 players.

>Decent options within most guilds but you will eventually settle in on the same roster, with 1-2 substitutions for certain matchups in draft play.

>Balance is good but not perfect so once you settle into a roster pretty much everything else stays on the shelf. Not as bad as having a billion trap choices in other

>Model assembly flat out sucks and everything but the new plastics need pinning.

>Model quality is inconsistent and compared to other games rely on good paint to differentiate between models. (Getting better though)

You're playing a pirate, /tg/.

While a boarding action, the Captain gave the order to "Kill every man on board." So in the midst of this, you go below decks and find the ship's doctor in the middle of delivering a baby. Before you can kill him, he informs you that without him, the mother and child would both die. What do?

Can we talk about Crimson Skies? I think we need to talk about the Crimson Skies.

What is it?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson_Skies

Crimson Skies is the result of an afterhours project at FASA, set in an alternate timeline in the 1930s where the great depression, prohibition and spanish influenza outbreak caused the united states to fracture into warring nation states. Zeppelins becoming the main mode of transport and shipping, and thus naturally leading to daring aerial piracy.

The miniatures game came out in 1998, at the tail end of FASA's reign. There was a pretty awesome but buggy PC game, an above average Xbox game and a odd Wizkids Clix game that crashed and burned.

Where do I get the Rules?
https://warosu.org/tg/thread/18975121

Where do I get the miniatures?
http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/crimson-skies-c-29/

Why should I play this?
Because it's a solid aerial combat game that you only need 4-6 planes per side, even fewer depending on the scenario. There's a lot of flavour and lore out there to help you make your own band of aerial cut-throats, private milita or state army or anything inbetween. I loved this game growing up and I want to see it played again or at least remembered.

So what improvements to your EDH decks will you be making with the new C17 cards? I don't care for the precons, but I always love getting new options for old decks.

The Kindred cycle seems like the big winners of the release. The blue one especially seems powerful for The Locust God, where it'll draw your whole deck after the first trigger. I'll probably put Kindred Charge in there as well, as doubling my insect army seems like a great way to overrun the board. I'll be trying out Kindred Summons in my Sliver Overlord deck, in addition to the previous two.

The Sliver deck is getting the most upgrades, with Herald's Horn and Path of Ancestry both joining in addition to the three mentioned Kindred spells. The white and black ones seem the least powerful overall due to the vulnerability of the former and the cost of the latter.

Bloodforged Battle-Axe seems like it'll be really good in my Hope of Ghirapur Voltron deck, as will Hammer of Nazahn.

Lastly, I'm sure I'm not the only Omnath, Locus of Rage player that will be making room for Traverse the Outlands. Seems potentially ludicrous.

I'll be getting the full kindred cycle for Reaper King and Crimson Honor Guard for my Tsabo deck
>>
Vindictive Lich seems really strong for a Mikaeus deck, especially if you can bring it back from the graveyard a few times.
>>
I'd say that every tribal deck of every sort will probably run Herald's Horn. Mini-Urza's Incubator with scrying upside seems really strong. Same goes for the Path of Ancestry. It's a tapland, but again, that scry value will add up quickly.
