I hate the idea of the Vong, but I'm currently using the concept of aliens from outside of the galaxy as the meta plot for my campaign.

For X-wing, how would you do a tournament centered around a mission? Likely the Escort mission from the core sets?

I'd like to try a non- 100/6 format for next month's tournament, but I'm not sure how to balance it fairly.

Pharsalus2.jpg

It is 2,065 years since the Battle of Pharsalus, a decisive battle of Caesar's Civil War. Julius Caesar and his allies formed up opposite the army of the republic under the command of Pompeius Magnus ("Pompey the Great"). Pompey had the backing of a majority of the senators, of whom many were optimates, and his army significantly outnumbered the veteran Caesarian legions.

The two armies confronted each other over several months of uncertainty, Caesar being in a much weaker position than Pompey. The former found himself isolated in a hostile country with only 22,000 men and short of provisions, while on the other side of the river he was faced by Pompey with an army about twice as large in number. Pompey wanted to delay, knowing the enemy would eventually surrender from hunger and exhaustion. Pressured by the senators present and by his officers, he reluctantly engaged in battle.

Pompey anchored his right flank on the Enipeus River and deployed his men in the traditional formation of three lines, each ten men deep. Knowing that he had a larger and better-trained cavalry force, he concentrated his horse on the left. His plan called for the infantry to remain in place, forcing Caesar's men to charge a long distance and tiring them before contact. As the infantry engaged, his cavalry would sweep Caesar's from the field before pivoting and attacking into the enemy's flank and rear.

Seeing Pompey move off the mountain, Caesar deployed his smaller army to meet the threat. Anchoring his left, led by Mark Antony, along the river, he too formed three lines though they were not as deep as Pompey's. Also, he held his third line in reserve. Understanding Pompey's advantage in cavalry, Caesar pulled 3,000 men from his third line and arrayed them in a diagonal line behind his cavalry to protect the army's flank. Ordering the charge, Caesar's men began advancing. Surging forward, it soon became clear that Pompey's army was standing their ground.

Whether it's original, Reloaded, or the other spin-off, (Back off, I just woke up and never played that one, so the name is eluding me) feel free to discuss them here.

To start things off quite simply, I have two questions regarding OG Deadlands.

A: Anyone ever thought of making a cheat-sheet for the various monsters in DL that a Harrowed can 'Count Coup' from? 'Cause if not, I might do that. Just a blurb of Name and Power, because I'd be interested in that for a quick-reference.

B: As a guy who's played a mad scientist character twice, I'm having a bit of 'trouble' coming up with interesting or unique inventions for my current one; a chick working for the Men in Black (Dusters). So far, I've turned a Ballard '72 into 1800's M1 Garand (clip with 5 bullets instead of single shot) and I have an IDEA for putting pseudo-bayonet attachments onto all sorts of guns, a la the PS2 game Darkwatch. (Pistols have talon/hook shaped blades attached to the bottom of the grip, rifles have blade running underneath the stock so if something gets close enough that you have to cold-cock them with the rifle butt or grab the barrel and swing it like a baseball bat, they take a short-swords length of steel to the whatever.)

Question is: any better ideas for mad science, and is it worth it to have the extra sharp bits added onto existing guns in case of surprise melee?

I once had great success with a mad scientist - Billy Braxton, Boy Genius - who would continuously scrawl invention ideas on whatever surface happened to be handy. Basically what I did was I would look at whatever situation the party was in at any point, and come up with a dozen ridiculous, dangerous and impractical inventions that could get the party out of it. Stuck in a well? Coal-powered stilts, explosive-heel shoes, super-dense foaming soap. Dumb things that would only really be useful for solving the immediate problem. Never built like, 90% of them on account of it not being the time nor the place, but occasionally - usually when we were in a similar situation some time later -
with a bit of creativity I'd be able to pull out just the right tool for the job.

Of course I invented my way straight into the looney bin - character had to be retired after I ended up building a giant death ray in an attempt to blow up the moon for reasons that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time but were tragic in hindsight - but such are the perils of the improvisational sciences.

So to answer your question, best path of mad science I ever found was to find common situations that you will find yourself in, and then invent utilitarian devices to help get you out of them. Utility should never be underestimated.

>after searching for whatever it was the captain thought we would find here a firefight breaks out
>run out of the transport ship to see what the fuss was
>dark Eldar that we had encountered earlier
>Skáll hates filthy Eldar so he rushes the first group
>we smash those guys good
>on to the next
> Skáll sees that these Eldar are much taller, thinner and more lady like...
>”Cap'n, I'm bringing that one back”
>now listen, Skáll was a simple man who just wanted a bit of xeno yummy on the side, can you blame him?
>we rush this group of Dark Eldar Wyches

Durthi is a half-orc life cleric who was adopted by a human religious group and raised within their santuary, where she played the conga drum for the church band.

How do I deal with apathetic players /tg/?

We're playing 5e (inb4 have you tried not playing D&D) and it's my first time DMing. My players all have this frustrating tendency to not explore anything. I can describe a dozen plot hooks in their environment but unless I have some NPC physically walk up to them and request their help they won't do anything. For example:

>Me: You arrive in the town of etc, from what little you know of the town you've heard rumors of a resurgent thieves guild, missing grain supplies from the harbor and a recent political scandal involving the mayor
>Players: We head towards the tavern
At first I thought they'd try to get some information there but literally all they did was just have their characters sit there and drink. This continued until I ended up having one of the related problems come to them or nothing would have gotten done.

Another example:
>Me: You wade through the fetid waist high swamp water. On either side of you you catch the occasional glimpse of a cave entrance.
>Players: We keep moving forwards

It's as if they think that quests or important information or loot will just come to them instead of seeking it out for themselves as though everything in this world revolves around them. I've asked them all if they enjoy the game, both as a group and individually, and they all insist they do but then they invest themselves into it as little as possible. Now if it were just one or two players doing this I'd discuss the issue with them and possibly let them go if they continued but it's literally the whole group doing this so I can't just kick them all. The worst part of this all is that the game isn't unenjoyable; I'm just constantly reminded of how much more enjoyable and interesting it could be every session if not for my players handicapping themselves. Furthermore it makes all the work I put into the game feel redundant.

Confiscate their phones, then, as they enter a town, stab one in the leg and tell them if they want to fix his leg with the first aid kit they have to solve the mystery of the town.

You know, I was thinking for a pathfinder campaign, what if instead of the conventional monsters and villains a usual party might face, Goblins, Orcs, Trolls, Dragons, Liches, evil Wizards, etc... What if the PC's were stuck facing monsters that were so silly or even ridiculous that even in a high-fantasy setting other adventurers wouldn't believe their claims.

Like fighting tooth faeries http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/fey/tooth-fairy/ , or even have the big BBEG be a Bogeyman http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/fey/bogeyman/ instead of the usual antagonist like a Lich. I mean their stat-profile is intimidating enough And I think this adds some interesting dialoge and events. For example, it's reasonable to think the PCs won't be taken seriously except largely by children, which makes for both awkward situations when trying to investigate, and it makes boasting of one's deeds an exercise in humiliation.

Anyway My question is what other fantastical adversaries should I be looking into that would still prove to be challenging adversaries for the players, but still fit that theme of sounding way too ridiculous/silly/whimsical for the PC's to be believed?

>You think avoiding the traps in a dungeon is tough?
>Try sneaking into a five year old girls room at night, past her patents, so you can defeat the monster in her closet before it manages to break out and endanger reality.
>Then explain what you were doing in there to the local law enforcement/lynch mob...

parents

>barge into a battle FAR beyond their capabilities
>suck xeno dicks for a whole year
>only around 8000 worthy skulls to show for it and that is considering that Octarius orkz and `nids are large as fuck
>not a single important enemy was even injured let alone killed
>even daemons and Khorne puss-out and leave
>run away in the end to suck much more familiar imperial dicks
>orkz and `nids don`t even notice the meddling losers and keep fighting each other as if nothing happened

You hear that thunder, khornecucks? It is Ghazghkull laughing his green ass off. Hivemind would laugh too if it could.

Where is this from?

dude the smallest skull they offered was the size of a boulder. That means that out of all the skulls they were taking, those were the ones they considered best to send up.

Odds are they killed countless lesser orks/gaunts, realized that the last thing Khorne wanted was a huge ass pile of gaunt skulls, and started sending him only good ones.

Imagine skulls like emails, and khorne's skull throne like an email box.

Would you want to get spammed with 100,000 shitty emails a day, or would you prefer a few far more quality ones? I just imagine khorne opening his mailbox only to be buried in shitty little tiny skulls and sending them an angry ultimatum of "LESS SKULLS NEXT TIME, KTHX"

Khorne cares not from were the blodd flows, only that it flows
Burying him in snotling skulls, hundreds of billions of snotling skulls, is entirely a valid why of going about his worship.
