>In a setting where undead and monsters that make use of corpses exist and are a know threat people still use burials.
52 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Undead and monsters aren't always everyday occurrences, or even things people have previously dealt with in settings where they exist.
>>
Yeah sure let's just not put people to rest and have a shitload of banshees and ghouls and ghosts and shit running around. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
>>
Presumably it happens in waves.

Some necrofucker wrecks a bunch of shit with undead hordes, and for a generation or two, everyone burns corpses, so potential necromancers can't get off the ground. Then enough time passes and people start doing burials again, and another necromancer fucks everyone's shit up with a horde of the undead and the cycle repeats.

What are your thoughts on metacurrency, /tg/? Do you like it is as a major mechanic, like FATE, or do you prefer games without it? Why?

I've been working on my own game lately and this has been a major stumbling block for me. I like the idea of players rewarding each other for good behavior, as per Golden Sky Stories or Tenra Bansho Zero, but I can't figure out how useful that currency should be. Should players use it to directly affect the game fiction (i.e. adding/removing elements from scenes)? Should it be usable as an in-character currency, to buy goods and services? Should it be a buffer against bad rolls? Used to heal wounds? "Tell the GM 'no'" chips?

I like Hero Points in Mutants and Masterminds 2e. You, the player, get a Hero Point for intentionally failing a save (and thus going along with the GM's story, though the rules clearly say you don't HAVE to), when an enemy rerolls an attack or save, or when the GM introduces one of your Complications, which are basically plot hook generation devices that let you the GM do things like throw old enemies at you.

You can use them for a bunch of things and you're better off reading them from the book.

Essentially, I like when metacurrency is something the GM gives for certain actions, and not something the players can give each other.

FATE is garbage, as is anyone who plays it.

If you're catering to that sort of audience, go for it. Make the currency super valuable and significant. You're playing utterly broken-ass games anyway, might as well have fun with it.

I think it's a superfluous immersion breaker.

I dislike attempts at bribing people to do roleplaying.
I dislike players conjuring events, objects or people out of nothing.
I dislike mounting doom or fortune points that try to impose a dramatic arc as if the game where a preplanned book.
I dislike giving critique or praise through a layer of mechanics.
I dislike introducing mechanical power differences because one person roleplays more pleasing.
I don't like mechanically rewarding dishonest praise (because awarding points for bad roleplay can make the group stronger).
I dislike managing a resource that has nothing to do with ingame reality.
I dislike the zero sum game that can unfold between GMpoints and PCpoints.
I dislike the incentive for controlled mitigated failures in order to gain success at a point that has been determined as critical by metagaming at a later point.
I dislike the imposition of mechanics on narrative that was unrestrained before.

Overall one of my least favorite mechanics.
And its inclusion in more recent rules lite games is like the one step backward to the forward steps.

I need good systems that can simulate ongoing campaigns of gang wars, conquest, etc.

Doesn't matter what specific rule set it uses, as long as it's flexible enough to be adjusted to different scenarios.

I am running a Shadowrun game that has a heavy focus on organized crime.
The setup for the campaign was that the New Yorker mafia and triad forged a loose alliance to kick the yakuza and vory out of NYC.

The characters are the Mafia Capo di Capi's daughter, a chinese war hero who joined the triad and their two buddies. The PCs have become the poster children for the alliance between the two syndicates and through crime jobs and good old running have come to the point where they SHOULD be pulling major strings in their respective organizations.

I just have NO idea how to satisfyingly pull that off without either handwaving bullshit, or using SR's clunky system to play out each and every encounter.

I'm making a setting based on real world magical traditions.

A friend of mine suggested making women superior at magic compared to men based on mythology and folklore, but would this be accurate?
After looking through actual hidden/secret societies throughout history it seems men have still dominated in matters of the occult.

He's no white knight or a fedora tipping SJW, but does he have a point?
338 posts and 35 images submitted.
>>
>>54845484
He has no point, most major magicians were men. If you wanted a thematic [if not necessarily historic] division of magic along sexual lines, there is always the idea that there are certain female genetic lines where a kind of natural magic passes from mother to daughter [witches] whereas academic magic is open to both sexes but is overwhelmingly male.
>>
>>54845484
Unless you're gonna make men better at nonmagical stuff, then it's SJW shit. And even then if the system is 3.x it's ALWAYS SJW shit
>>
>>54845484
This seems like the sort of thing that would vary enormously depending on the culture and time period involved, to the point of not having a generic answer.

Did your friend provide any examples more concrete than "mythology and folklore"?

Did your own research touch upon something more specific than "matters of the occult"?

Is high intelligence integral to the elven archetype?

Like, is it thematically sound to make an elf barbarian who's all muscles and no brains (and looks like Markie Post in her early 20s)?
25 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>54845169
It depends on the setting. In SOS the elves are mostly stupid basques who eat people and alcoholic sailors who also eat people.

I DM and play in a club and these are just 4 very very common traits that new people have to some varying degree with out fail when they join.

had a game today of a guy who was all four which was a shock. it's annoying to play a character sincerly and then have a guy fuckin around as you're trying to figure out a problem within your characters limited or expanded knowlege or relay a complexed concept to the party or figure out what would convince a person or what is the moral approach your character would take in a situation.

it's not even being a murderhobo out right it's being a deranged lol so random non of my actions matter because it's a game faggots that just cause as much conflict or complications as they can.

Faster than light communication is not possible, however, faster than light TRAVEL is possible, though not instantaneous.
>>
>>54844577
FTL travel is done via jumpgates that propel you through hyperspace at a given straight direction for a given time. These gates require enormous amounts of energy and need to be far from gravity wells.

Messenger probes and courier ships sent through these gates are used for interstellar communication.
>>
>>54844674
Hyperspace does not always appear the same on each jump through it, with the environment something changing dramatically. There have been rare reports of people seeing "monsters" while in it.

Whether this is true, that they're hostile, or anything else has not yet been conclusively proven.

Yeah most of the players and groups you will find will be shit, but most D&D players are. Keep contact with the good players, and keep looking till you find a group that works for you. Unless you are in a rural area it really isn't that hard.
