Beyond the whole "Confucian jihadist ogre" shtick, which I personally found to be cool, it felt to me like there was a lot of wasted potential about the Qunari as antagonists. It almost seemed like at some earlier point in the story there was a real intention to show them as a viable option to align oneself with, so to speak, with a sympathetic motivation and understandable appeal. There was more focus on people who willingly joined them and were genuinely happy with it and less on the secret police brainwashing everyone. They offered a clean, safe, harmonious existence (if under a very regimented society that doesn't place a ton of value on "fun") and a religion focusing on personal growth and fulfillment (it had a bit of a Buddhist vibe) rather than supplication, which I'd imagine might not even sound all that bad to the average medieval peasant.
Then Bioware happened.
How would you fix the Quanri depiction and their place in a theoretical narrative so as to make them the complex, morally ambiguous antagonist faction they could be?

How comes it's so easy to talk about (or, rather, infer the existence of) a "standard fantasy setting" which everyone will assume by default unless exceptions are explicitly described, compared to a "standard science fiction setting"? Wouldn't fantasy be naturally a lot broader, since it doesn't have to obey the laws of science?

The inferred "standard fantasy setting" isn't really similar to Lord of the Rings, though. It's more like a weird mishmash of the implied D&D setting with a little bit of anime (e.g. if you say "lamia" on /tg/ people will assume by default you're talking about Monster Musume snakegirls, not D&D's liontaur vampiresses).

Yeah, Lord of the Rings seen through a highly reductionist lens through which you miss the overarching themes of the novels as well as the fact that they drew inspiration from pre-existing mythologies.
"Standard fantasy" is, to resort to stereotypes, what a cashgrabbing Hollywood director sees when he looks at Lord of the Rings. Devoid of deeper thought and easy to digest.

The SCS was made as an addon to the CYOA to cover the combat side of roleplaying. It allows players to easily take characters made in the CYOA v1.5 and use them in Quests and long-running campaigns alike. Note that this system DOES require you to have a character made in the CYOA in the OP first.

Hi TG I just joined a D&D 3.5 Edition game and am trying to pick a character class. The GM has explicitly said that all core classes all allowed but he could be persuaded to include others if I have a good character concept, beyond that I don't know much we just talked briefly before he went to bed.
For my character I'm wanting to play someone Who rose from humble beginnings probably an orphan, maybe someone who came from a poor abusive family. I'm not interested in a special snowflake, I want a character who got where he is due to hard work, some luck, and maybe a bit of natural aptitude but not much else.
Plan on making him lawful good. A very principled character with a strong sense of purpose. Who gets in the trouble for doing the right thing all the time.
The other player in the group is a neutral good half elf bard, he says his inspiration is Robert Downey jr. Sherlock home.
Have a feeling he'll bite off more than he can chew narratively speaking so I'd like to have some muscle to back him up.
A I know some of you may be thinking "he's totally a paladin" and I've already thought of that I'm trying to see what my options are in the context of 3.5.

If the other player is a Bard, there aren't any core melee classes that are of the same tier. If you're OK with being a tier behind, the Barbarian is a good choice, but thematically you may want one of the Tome of Battle characters which are all three on the same tier as the Bard. and two of those fit very well with your "hard work" aesthetic while the last one is basically "Paladin with better designed mechanics."
Alternatively, a multiclass Paladin/Sorcerer looking to get into the Eldritch Knight class by level 8 is *approximately* balanced with a Bard and fits your flavor.

There's also a number of good Bard combat spells. You could backport dance of a hundred cuts from PF if you must.

You can carry two swords comfortably on your side, but the double-ended one has to be carried like a polearm, uncomfortably
You can give a second sword away or stack the two of them on top of each other in a wagon for easier storage
