I chose Mu'Gulath Bay sept because they have hive world experience and I thought the color would go well.

I'd have never attempted this white except I finally got a wet palette.

Thank you so much anon. Who knew compliments from a stranger on a Caribbean plastic toy remodelling site could make me smile this much? I mixed wash and paint 1:1 and tried building it up, using a black wahsh for shade. I suck at painting being blind (basically life is one big soft focus) so I thought this might be the best way that doesn't require a lot of fine motor control

Ive had this problem before, you're just thinning them too much.
The solution in this problem is to keep a dry paint brush near by and use it to succ out the wet paint. Don't try adding more until its dry.
Keep trying to figure out that sweet spot to thin the paints. Watch duncans vids and just watch how the paint flows. It's kind of like learning to drive your car within your lane. It might be tricky at first but once you do it for so long it becomes second nature.

Lukes APS has a video on it in YouTube. Also I've heard you can use acryllic flow extender to just thin your paint into a wash.
>>
>>52804990
Could use another wash to really darken the cracks.
Maybe use a less stark highlight color but either way looks fine.
>>
>>52804990

I actually thought that orange was a trim colour until this >>52805136 anon pointed out that that was supposed to be highlighting.

So yeah, thin down your extreme highlights significantly. They should only be thinlines around the sharpest edges. You can add a slightly lighter version of your basecolour around the edges to make the transition less stark.

Also, obligatory "THIN YOUR PAINTS" comment and paint the blood-droplets like gem stones. It's easier than it sounds, and there's 600 gorillion guides for it if you google it.

Yep, Im the valhallan guy, and i guess you have coined that!
Generally tracks that were welded on the front of tanks were either from already destroyed tanks or leftovers in a workshop, so id see minimal weathering from the elements and if any from battle damage, as the crew would usually choose the best intact pieces.

You just mix a bit in with the main paint on your palette or whatever and it thins it without altering the properties of the paint, so no bubbles and no runny water syndrome.

Anybody have experience with jewelry?

I'm wondering if it's easy to find jewelry chain small enough to put on a miniature. I've been thinking of making a golden Necron Pimp Lord, for shits and giggles, and if he isn't completely bedecked in bling it won't be proper.

I'm not looking for actual gold chain to waste, it doesn't matter if it's really cheap brass or whatever, so long as it's the right size. Hell, even not-golden stuff would work since I'm planning on painting over it anyways.

If anybody knows something more suitable than picking up miniature jewelry bits at Michaels then I'd be interested in that too.

You are setting too high a bar for yourself.

Always paint in batches of 3-4 miniatures. Its easier and lets you remain consistent. Before you know it you finish things off and the scheme remains stable across the army.

Personally though my CSM are being painted on a 'what I feel like basis' to give them a more chaotic warband feel than the legion/chapter uniform patterns.

One question from a guy who just started painting this Monday for the first time.

I´m following a walkthrough that I found online and it says to thin out the wash that I´m currently using 50/50 water.

Am I getting goofed upon? thinning wash sounds stupid, I can say that the results that I´m getting are not bad, but I just feel stupid doing it.
>>
>>52809296
Its not stupid.

Washes are basically really thinned paints and it's easy to go overboard with them. Thusly thinning them is a return to the old axiom of 'Thin you paints'

Thinning them gives you greater control because you can build up layers just like you would thinning you paints. It also avoids excessive darkening / colouring and helps eliminate pooling problems.

50/50 sounds a bit heavy though on thinning. Try different ratios to find what you work with best.
>>
>>52809058
nice, I like the purple cords
>>
>>52809296
I agree with above a on. 50/50 is too much, but thinning your washes can yield good results.
I will add, though: use actual thinner instead of water. Regular water changes how it adheres to surfaces a bit. With thinner, it's more likely to fill recesses and less noticeably darken the.overall shade of what you're washing

the first layer is milliput, i added six legs already, cause i like how the lower part turned out and i want them as close to te body as possible , the next stage is greenstuff it needs a longer tongue and snout and more detailing but it will have to dry overnight. the wing is a paper testfit wich is way off but it gives me a general idea of the whole thing , i think i will make the final parts of thin plasticard, i tried clear blisterplastic bit i wont crumple the way i want it to or it gets with stressmarks

Finally, I have acquired to courage to start painting Shrike. The black parts of the armour are pretty much done, just a touch up here and there where the paint flaked.

I'm still not sure how to paint the cables trailing from his Claws, white or black?

Got any pics? I have an absolute buttload of heroclix (the old Mage knight ones) so those would need a strip and repaint. Whereas newer ones might just need touch ups (like what I did with my X-wing)

So, I just bought a stick of Oatey's Fix-it putty to deal with some leaky pipes in the house, but I was wondering if I might also be able to use it to fill in the big gaps in slotted GW bases that metal minis don't fill all the way. I don't need it to be something I can sculpt detail and shit with. I just need it to fill in that hole in the base so I can base my dudes. Will it work or should it stay in the garage with the other home improvement shit?

I realize it's a little outside the scope of what we normally do here, but does anyone wanna help me fluff my Knights army? I could use modeling ideas too. They're Chaos renegades of Tzeentch. Here's what I've got:

1 Lancer
1 Atropos
1 Castigator
2 GW knights that I have any weapon options I want for
1 wallet near death that hates me with every leather centimeter of its' being

One of the GW knights is gonna have lots of gaping mouths and eyeballs all over it, going for a Screamer vibe.
The Lancer is gonna have feathers all over the damn place but can't really come up with anything more chaosy than that.
No idea what I'm gonna do for the rest.

You mix alcohol-based thinner with water-based paint?

Interesting, I would not have expected that to work. The Tamiya thinner is designed for use with their alcohol-based paints, always assumed it wouldn't play nice with Citadel products
>>
>>52813136
what would you expect to happen?

alcohol-based thinners are what the golden demon crazy painters use, never water/medium. water/medium will increas paint thickness where as alchol-based thinners will cause the layer to bond somewhat with the previous layer/coat. It's kind of hard to explain, but painting a thin layer of alcohol based thinned paint, will apply a less thick coat than paint thinned with water/medium (but at the same time the amount is soooooo fucking small it would only be noticable if you were doing multiple thin coats to blend/shade/higlight etc. If you paint like duncan, alcohol based thinners are completely uneccessary though, imo)

i've always thought of doing them with homemade ballistics gel preserved with glycerin and colored with food coloring.
>>
>>52815167

Fun idea.

You might be able to do it without the wire.

Depending on how thick the resin the parts might float on their own, pour a bit, push a part into it, pour a bit more.

Or maybe do the resin in layers letting it dry a bit and hold each part before adding another.

If you've got the actual kit for making proper moulds go for that but depending on the shape you are looking for you could maybe use an old paint pot or something, you might have to destroy the pot to get it out though.
>>
>>52815326
Only think I'm worried about with the push and place method is the creation of air bubbles when I'd do it. I'll have something vibrating the table so it won't be as bad but still, I've never worked with that type of resin before.
It's actually really easy to make moulds using the LEGO brick house method, all I would need is a master model which I could sculpt myself and sculpting clay. Build up the clay, press the master into the bottom side, build up the clay so the master is split in half with no gaps and then make push to fit depressions all around the mould so there's no slipping. Spray on mould release then build up your brick house and mix and pour your two part silicone. Remove clay, keeping your master embedded in the now dry silicone, flip it silicone down, build up brick again, spray mould release then mix and pour. There's your two part mould.
>>52815280
I don't think gel is even necessary, just any clear resin with dye would work

>>
>>52815578

Ballistic gel might not be the best, I think it starts going at a fairly low temperature. Pressure and dust wouldn't do too much to it though and it's not like it would be hard to make replacements if it did degrade.

Urethane liquid rubber or something like that would probably be a better choice though.

Their little booklet says to prime in white, dip it in the shader and let it dry, does add a ton of definition for little to no effort, I'll probably batch paint all my boyz like this from now on

but I do know theres some cheap product that works exactly as well as this stuff apparently, wood shader or something?

tau, of all things

for a year or so I've had this idea for very industrial looking tau with lots of bolts, rivets, hazard stripes, and weathering, and just recently I've bought some stuff off ebay and some plastic hex rod to finally go through with it. If it doesn't come out like shit I'll be sure to post pics.

I don't normally paint weathering on anything, so this will be a nice change of pace

This weekend I'll be be stripping paint off ebay models, doing the bases, and if my hex rod arrives, building a few drones, buying any paints or supplies over the week (I'll be out of town and unable to paint), then getting to painting next weekend.

I painted my Space Hulk set using the quickshade dip and I'm going to be using it to paint my brother's Chaos Daemons army. Overall it's a really good system from my experience-- the only catch is you have to make sure you give the dip about 2 days to fully cure before you spray on the matte finish, or it might make your colors look foggy (happened on maybe two of my Blood Angels but I wasn't bothered enough by it to re-do them). It's just too bad that I can't find anyone to play it with because learning the rules is such a pain in the ass (I should use that as incentive to pain Imperial Assault, since my friends actually like that game).

As long as you're patient and wait for everything to cure between steps, I find it's an excellent way to quickly and / or easily paint an army. I'm used to doing things the slow way so I always end up painting all the little details like eyes and stuff, but if you're a less experienced painter you can pretty easily skip the small frustrating stuff like eyes and still have a decent looking army. The dip also does a good job of hiding little mistakes since all the crevices are getting filled in.

Another key to a good dipping job is to use an electric drill to spin the excess dip off, although I implore of anyone doing this to hold it inside of a cardboard box while it spins. And since I paint the eyes, I give them a little puff of compressed air to make sure there's not too much dip on them.

The cheap alternative to quickshade is Minwax. Both are essentially polyurethane and brown stain. Army Painter quicksade is basically game-specific version of it. I don't know if the 5x more expensive pricetag translates to significantly better results because I havn't tried using Minwax.
>>
>>52816533
Pls give me your friends. Trying to sell anyone on imperial assault has been a pain. It is kinda my fault for introducing them to arcadia quest
>>
>>52816551
I find Imperial Assault is a great gateway drug for people who don't want to try a full-fledged RPG. We have a board game night where we sometimes try new stuff and I was able to get them to try it. One of the main reasons why the rules are easier to learn than Space Hulk is because it uses cards, something Space Hulk is in desperate need of since it would mean less thumbing through the manual.

If you want to sell people on Imperial Assault the easiest way to do it is to open up the box and let them start playing around with the pieces. The tactile sensation of opening what's essentially a big box full of little Star Wars toys might be enough to get them interested.
>>
>>52816533
maybe im just used to cancer rule sets, but space hulk didn't seem too ridiculously complex to learn. especially if you play the tyrannid side.
>>
>>52816611
nah it's one of the most accessible board games GW ever made, only things that get even slightly tricky are the muhrine abilities
>>
>>52816533

From a little googling it seems like Minwax and quickshade (and probably all oil based polyurathane stain) is much the same.

Certainly comparisons between Minwax and quickshade have them is pretty much identical when it comes to consistency, level of pigment, coverage and all the other important stuff.

Reminds me of when CoolMini took undyed Oyumaru and repackaged it as "Instant Mold".

3 sticks of Instant Mold being sold at the same price as 24 (TWENTY FOUR) sticks of Oyumaru.

quickshade method for painting is my favorite for the mass jobs, literally basecoat one color, dip, dry, color all the shit with basically one layer, dip again, you're done

it won't win any awards, but it's nothing to scoff at either, especially for the minimal effort, I tell everyone new to painting to do this method
>>
>>52816773
>>52816291

I didn't know you could pre-dip or doubledip, I was sold it as a lazy man's shade to be applied just before varnish.
>>
>>52816773
I use the color spray primers. For me it's spray, touch up base coat / primer, paint details, dip, spin, and then spray with matte lacquer. If there are any extra details that I really want to pop out, like the lightning on my Marine commander's sword >>52816533, I paint those after the dip and before the spray. If there's anything that needs to be shiny, I will paint a bit of gloss varnish on it after spraying.

That's just it though-- the marines are a lot harder to learn than the tyranids, which makes the game feel really unbalanced for new players. If neither player has any experience with the game, both are going to feel somewhat overwhelmed, but the marine player is always going to lose.

Not to mention it's a bear to set up. Imperial Assault made the smart choice to number the floor tiles which makes them easier to organize and set up maps with.

Lastly, Space Hulk is a two player game, which unfortunately makes it an automatic flop at parties, and homebrew rules don't really do much for the fun factor.

I feel like Doom did a better job at what Space Hulk was shooting for, and then came Imperial Assault, and now we have a new version of doom. I feel after 30 years SH is probably due for a gameplay overhaul, especially if it accommodates more players.

Honestly, neither do I. Just something that'd match the look of the guardian spears and sentinel blades, I guess.
I've looked at stormcast lances, but those are also broad and unwieldy. Something slim would be nice.

Im exactly the same, it feels better in the hand for me. The only problem is due to the scale, ankle joints and the like are very fragile and dont take much effort to snap. Thanks man, the blue of the ghosts is a Humbrol Metallic blue and the others are tamiya clears over a silver base.

On a whole its a really good game. Cheap to buy, quick to learn and play and mainly fun. I gave up 40k in favour of this and im definitely enjoying the change.

KD models are 32-35mm, so they're rather large compared to GW stuff in many places, while also being more realistically proportioned than GWs Heroic Scale, so other parts will be too thin.
That's not even considering how hard to get some of those models are, given their rather limited production runs.

KD/M's heads will fit fine on 40k models, but that's about it. Also most cheap options on ebay are recasters. In addition, many pinups do not have the heads as their own bit, such as having the head 1/4th connected to the body, with other bits that connect via back and neck for face or hair.

hey guys I had a thought
when you copy a figure you usually do so with an assembled one
anyone ever tried copying a sprue with everything attached to it?
I thought it would be neat to make a copy, say, in tin and soldier it together
>>
>>52823644
All you'll end up doing it wasting a ton of your recasting material re-creating a sprue. Easier to separate the parts from the sprue, make a mould with your own channels in it to minimise wastage and then recast the parts. Why would you want to solder minis together though, the precision solder you'd need will still ruin some of the detail of the miniature.
>>
>>52823567
The ebay recasters generally aren't as good as 40k recasters. Just search a certain model you want and you're bound to find it at too-good-to-be-true prices. (anything below $25 for one model)

Seriously, just try to get the unarmored survivor sprue instead.
>>
>>52823706
Only reason full sprues work is pressure casting method.
>>
>>52814917
did not know that! thanks for the lore!
>>
>>52823706
well it's not resin, I can just melt the sprue again and again
and I don't have to necessarily soldier it together, glue would surely do just as fine and now I thought about it and soldering would be a pain, although for me bit of spot welding and removing the excess would do - if I screw up I can just melt it too
>>52823761
can't the sprue be adjusted to compensate with vents or spin casting?
>>
>>52823859
Vents, no.
Spin casting, perhaps
White resin dries very quickly, you would need something with a little less viscosity but it's easier to get air bubbles.
>>
>>52823918

So first off, the Outrider Knight on the top. What would be the best way to replicate the effect shown his armor on a miniature? What colors would you use? Someone in the last thread mentioned some sort of reverse highlighting?

And the second question. The Old Iron King on the bottom won't be shipped out until the second wave, but I was wondering if it'd be a good idea or not to try giving some texture to him. What do you think about covering him in some extremely fine sand? I'd obviously have to take care not to drown out the cracks in his lava hide, which would be super tedious, but I want to make these minis look good so I don't mind the extra work.

Learning how to blend and do NMM (it's the same shit).

What happened to the anon who asked /wip/ for advice on priming his new SoB minis? I was hoping to see pics.

Found some good ol' vanguard vets that were covered in about 10 layers of paint, so after a paint stripping and a move to the new 32mm bases, I have 4 of these guys to base and paint and 4 metal jump packs still to strip..

Also included is my chapter banner bearer to be, i still need to do a bit of greenstuff work on his left arm, as well as extending the banner pole a tad further since the banner currently covers pretty much his whole body on the pole...

anyone done their own tin/pewter casts?

Nah but I'm pretty sure you need ultra high tear mould material and special power so your mould doesn't get fused.

supposedly you can get a good dark metal affect by undercoating black and going over it with an extremely thin leadbelcher.

Yes. Hang around /WIP/ often enough, and you'll hear about all sorts of crazy casting schemes.

Because he couldn't hold up any longer.
On a serious note, does it look much like poop? I'm all ears to learn how to better sand.

Hey WIP I need some advice on my SWA team. The base color for the armor is what you see and there are going to be green accents on the shoulders/arms. My question is should I make the pants green as well or another color? I kinda like how it is now but I worry about lack of contrast.

And this is the final product. Like I said, nothing amazing but considering how easy, quick and cheap it is I'm happy. Makes for great mordheim bases

"So I done fucked up, and need some help.
I didn't prime first, and I need to remove enamel paint from my Xmas Special Pinup Twilight Knight. I forget to prime a lot, but i usually use really dark colors, and I do a sealing clear coat over anyways, so it's usually not a problem. But this one uses light colors."
Jesus Christ how.

my hex shaped plastic rod came, but it is way smaller than I expected. It's the right size listed on the order, but I made a mistake with the measurements. Unsure if I should get some bigger hex rod or just live with it. The round rod I ordered is going to be half the diameter oh my god

The rods were only a couple bucks so it isn't much of a loss, but if I buy more rods I am going to have to delay my project for at least another week

Definitely sounds like that's worth trying out. Thanks anon. You happen to know how to get a good frost effect for the armor?

oh this looks good

in the meanwhile I was doing my own research and I came across GW forums where a mod was browbeating a user to make him accept that if he copies a figure he owns (if you have the ability you can make a copy of any intellectual property you own) he literally steals from GW because he basically sells (illegal) it to himself and GW loses money

jesus what a bunch of kikes

Get some molten plastic and do like a candle maker, and then sculpt to the correct size :).

Could add a darker wash of brown over the pants to differentiate them from the armor without taking them too far away from the color.
