Hmmm. Still female. Probably another magical girl world. Whatever. As long as I get to pick the dress this time, I can deal with it.

…what? It's comfortable. Say what you will about the Witches and them being incredibly awful people who do awful things, they're onto SOMETHING with those Victorian-esque looks they've got. If I'm going to be wearing a dress for the next ten years, I want it to look stylish and not like I'm trying to show my bony [CENSORED] off. Oh. I can't swear, either? Bah.

>"I feel like you're starting to go native…"

Pffft, I've been in worse places. If I don't have to fight the entire world or a pantheon of Gods, then I can deal with this. Anyways, let's take things slow for a few days and get our bearing straight. I should probably make sure Voyager didn't go bankrupt again and check on--

Wait. What…what is this? What is this power I'm sensing?! This power…it's just as strong as, if not more than that of Timothy Hunter's unlocked potential from all those years ago! It's beyond me, miles and miles above me! I've finally found them! The strongest mage in all the multiverse! I must learn their secrets!

Anyways my companions dragged me away when I was bowing in front of a very confused Sakura and asking her to please teach me her secrets. Then they liberally applied several blunt objects to my head until I stopped acting like an idiot.

I finally went back to my old mansion after my long absence, the butler waiting for me patiently as if we were in Gotham still. I throw my senses outwards to scan for any threats…soldiers, magicians, or Hyde. I do it again for good measure. And again. Nothing is found, and even then, I can't bring myself to relax. I'm always anticipating an enemy around the corner. And why wouldn't I? I've fought gods and demons, monsters and madmen…and the worlds can be very direct in how much they want me gone.

Even gentle ones like this. It kind of reminds me of…of…what was that one world again? Kyrnn? Shokugen? No, that was the cooking one, wasn't it? Aaaagh, I'm having trouble keeping all of this straight. Can't brain properly.

I need to get out my body for a bit. I decided to astrally project myself and wander the world at large, seeing if I could track down any Clow Cards or something to distract myself. I saw lots of things and lots of people. A family sitting down to eat at dinner. Someone proposing to their lover on one knee in the park. The laughter of children playing out in the open.

It's strange. I've seen so many terrible things, so many people hurting each other and more. I've seen and fought in wars and seen gods both petty and great clash with forces beyond comprehension. I've seen and fought and killed heroes and villains alike. I've split heaven and earth with my magic, moved faster than the falling rain, and more. But it doesn't feel like any kind of huge accomplishment, now. It's just what I am. What I do.

Old words echo in my mind.

>"And it frightens you, doesn't it? Eventually, even things such as an army of Kamen Riders will be unable to stop you…inevitably, your power will cause you to go mad, tearing apart your soul and mind as you enact wicked works upon the world. Singlemindedly devoted to a single theme or concept, acting as little better than a force moving disinterestedly from one world to the next…"

What is a polite/straightforward way to say as a GM that tumblr-like and Extreme "PC Projecting" characters aren't accepted?

I'm accepting of most human characters but someone had tried to pass a "tumblrified" character who was a bi trans black woman with autism and vitiligo for a zombie surival rp. I just find it pandering for people to create overtly-marginalised because it becomes the only trait about them.

Has anyone gotten anything far worse? How did it turn out?

Pic kind of related.

Usually I just boot those people, and I'm not particularly polite about it. I mean, it's my game. If I don't run, no-one gets to play.

Just a:

> "Sorry, you're not a good match for the group. Good luck, I guess. Don't call back."
>>
Idk if its quite as bad but I had a PC in 5th edition try to play as a transsexual, transracial doppelganger who would constantly switch and try to force everyone else at the table to "respect my pronouns". That shit got tired fast so I killed their character in a fight.

Dearest /tg/,

How would you go about doing a GOOD Hive Mind, Swarm Intelligence, or otherwise Collective Conscious?

Hard mode: It's still one of those, "assimilate flesh" sort of Mind Swarm deals.

Just don't make them assimilate unwilling victims. There is nothing inherently evil with plugging a brain into another brain, and the two brains are unlikely to consider themselves separate entities after a while. There's significant evidence that this is how human brains work already, in fact. When you cut the connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, they'll get into arguments with one another, but when the hemispheres are unified, the idea that we are all a bunch of two-brain hive minds sounds funny to us.

There's upsides to having yourself subsumed as an individual to a hive mind. You get to be a part of something big and important, your individuality might be rapidly destroyed as you become a tiny part of something much bigger, but you don't *die*, and in fact you become basically immortal. Even if your original body dies, all your memories, thoughts, and experiences, everything that made you who you are, will live on in the hive mind. Only as a small part of it, but it won't be totally annihilated. It's a way of escaping a hopeless situation that's less grim than suicide. I wouldn't want to join a hive mind personally, but there are quite enough people in the world who would that a hive mind would have no difficulty perpetuating itself by assimilating volunteers exclusively.

The individual drones still have separate personalities and quirks, but their ambition and goals are entirely focused on the swarm as a whole. They don't have any personal motivations or goals, and their reason for living is "help the swarm prosper". They are not particularly empathetic outside of the swarm, but become much friendlier once they consider you a part of the swarm, which you must do by helping the swarm as a whole, and not the individual drone. Giving them a Christmas present will barely register on an emotional level for them, but donating to the swarm winter supplies or defending the swarm fortress from a hostile enemy will earn you an eternal friend.
>>
>>53384832

This is a good one that basically solves the whole dilemma: make it optional to join the comforting embrace of the Mother-Mind. There's lots of benefits and upsides in being a part of a unified whole, just don't go full "RESISTANCE IS FUTILE" on other species.

The Future of Go Summit thread & AlphaGo v. Ke Jie!
----
First match starts soon. If you missed the AlphaGo v. Lee SeDol matchup, but heard all the hubbub following it, this match is even bigger with much more media attention.

This will probably be the last time AlphaGo plays, to be honest. Deepmind will be focusing on other endeavors including Starcraft 2 after this match up.

My money is 3-0 AlphaGo.

Opinions? Does anyone even care? Livestream here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-HL5nppBnM

Holy shit. Ke Jie just played the 3-3. He's going to beat AlphaGo by playing the moves it invented but hasn't trained on.

GOOD LUCK ALPHA-CHAN!

Ke Jie is focusing on territory, but he has a lot of moyo in the top right, probably roughly equal to AlphaGo's moyo in the bottom.

Sup /tg/. Anyone here ever played Diplomacy?

For those unaware, it's basically seven people playing the great powers of Europe right before WWI; your actions then lead up to WWI. Countries are Italy, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Britain, France, Russia, Turkey. No dice rolling, the game is played solely by moving pieces and supporting each other (enter the titular "Diplomacy").

In particular, I was wondering if anyone could look at some variations I made to the Colonial Diplomacy variant.

I was going to go to be soon, but I'll talk about it, leave my question and the map, and come back in the morning.

The game is played by seven people, each playing one country. In some variations and 8th plays the role of a Game Master. Another variant includes yet another player as Bolshevism, and another also includes Fascism. The game is played such that each turn is half a year. First a Diplomacy phase begins wherein the players scatter and discuss things with each other. Then, the orders phase begins, where they sit down an silently write their orders down; these orders are in reference to unit movements.

Because each unit has the same strength, you need to have units support each other to make any progress in your conquests. Hence the Diplomacy as you can't win by yourself. You need to wheel and deal and get the other players to support your aims.

The goal of the game is to get 18 (or 19) Supply Centers. Each country starts with 3 except Russia who starts with 4. The number of SCs you have is equal to the number of units you can field (Boats and armies put together). There are a number of neutral SCs at game start (IE, Spain and Portugal) but these get taken quickly. After a certain point (Usually the end of the first year) all neutral SCs belong to someone so it becomes a seven way zero sum game.

You can see on this map several key conflict areas: The Low Countries/Franco-German border, the Balkans, the entire border of Austria-Hungary, and Scandinavia. Italy is notably able to wage a devastating amphibious assault on either France or Turkey.
>>
>>53382186
In the last game I played (With IRL friends) we only had six people. So, we did as the rulebook suggested and got rid of Italy. I personally feel this is a poor idea and instead Austria-Hungary and Germany should be merged as this results in France blobbing. Our Austria-Hungary was a friend of France's who, in hindsight, wasn't actually a good fit for this game (There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with that, it's not for everyone).

I, as Britain, made a parley with France: I wouldn't put boots on the continent in return for her never going north of the Mid-Atlantic with a fleet and would not contest her conquest of Italy. She obliged, only once bringing a boat back to the Mid-Atlantic, having sent three boats into the Mediterranean; I reshuffled my fleets away from Scandinavia and got her to stick to her word. Russia and I clashed in Scandinavia, and Germany and I parleyed over Denmark. I would eventually take Denmark from him after he sided with Russia and Turkey.

Russia and Turkey had allied in a move known as the "Juggernaut". Russia had begun to move west into Germany with the intention of gobbling him up shortly after I took Denmark from him. The game ended (after two separate four hour intervals) with Russia and Turkey beginning to turn on each other as I was poised to strike at France's rear the moment she began to move in.

The Ideologies variant has Bolshevism and Fascism rear their ugly heads; at any point, either of the Ideological players can pick a country, three Home Centers (The only SCs you can spawn units in), and then cut a country cleanly in half and take half of their units. This serves as a way to fit an eight and a ninth player in, or to bring players back from the dead.

The first GURPS campaign we did was Ice Age. Our tribe was destroyed by wendigo like monsters, and we three survivors had to make our way to a grand summit to warn some other tribes.

We fought nature, we fought spirits (poorly), and we fought against man. Survival was tough, and supplies were limited. But it was pretty fun

It's finding a single piece (or a few pieces) of information in an increasingly larger amount of information. Even in our modern libraries, if you're looking for a list of, say, diseases that affect the eye, you would be able to find many books on the subject very quickly; the book number and index inside the book make it "Well organized" and the medical books on the eye make it "Linked to all other info in area". However, if you're looking in a huge and well stocked library, then you're going to have over a dozen very thick tomes on the subject. Thus, it would take you possibly days to make your list.

However, if you are in the middle of a desert and you only have one 400+ page tome, it's going to take considerably less time to go through everything. If that tome is titled, "Things a Country Chirurgeon Should Know About Everything: A Guide to Practice, Etiquette and Stead-Keeping" which has neither a table of contents nor an index and the section about eyes just happens to be after the chapter about weeds, it might still be difficult to make your list.

So, in the first instance, you have thousands of books (4d6 days) but it's well organized (halve the base time) which leads you directly to the eye chapters (quarter the base time). Thus the base time (4-24 days, average of 14 days) will be vastly reduced; reaching a range of .5-3 days and averaging 1.75 days. DC 16
The second instance, you have one book (1d6 hours) but it's entirely disorganized (double base time) and the info you're looking for is nowhere near anything else related to it (quadruple the base time). Thus the base time (1-6 hours, average of 3.5 hours) it vastly increased; reaching a range of 8-48 hours and averaging 28 hours. DC 24

As you see, it takes longer to go through more books (or the like), but it's only slightly longer and much easier under the best of conditions than going through a single book under the worst conditions.

This assumes that the info is even there to start.
