What does /sci/ think of Milton Friedman?

I know he's not a "real" scientist by this boards standards but you cannot deny he's was an incredibly intelligent person who had a large influence on modern politics (Reagan, Thatcher, etc)

Doesn't matter, this thread will degenerate into Free market/Socialist shitflinging in the first few posts, as people either support free market economics or oppose them. Does it make any difference if I belong on one camp or the other? No, it doesn't. I'll say however that there's a good reason economics discussions are kept off a board that has to be conclusive and rigorous about its conclusions.

Maybe >>>/biz/ will be more accommodating.
>>
>>8819737
Extreme inequality and perfect egalitarianism are both entropically unfavorable and can't be maintained without force. The free market favors a gaussian distribution of wealth.
>>
>>8819737
Hack who contributed very little, heralded by ideological partisans.

Economics is not science.

What does /sci/ think of geniuses like this guy?

>perfect recall (could read a book once and recite it word for word)
>at age 6, could multiply and divide 8-digit numbers in his head
>brought his tutor, Gábor Szegő, to tears with his mathematical ability
>contributed to a shitload of fields: mathematics (foundations of mathematics, functional analysis, ergodic theory, geometry, topology, and numerical analysis), physics (quantum mechanics, hydrodynamics, and quantum statistical mechanics), economics (game theory), computing (Von Neumann architecture, linear programming, self-replicating machines, stochastic computing), and statistics
>Von Neumann was so bright that Nobel Prize-winning physicist Eugene Wigner would say, “only he was fully awake.” He had “the fastest mind” that economist Paul Samuelson had ever encountered and was “the cleverest man in the world” according to head of Britain’s National Physical Laboratory, as noted by Daniel Yergin in “The Quest.”

Why even bother trying to contribute to science or mathematics when there are ubermenschen like this walking around?

Also, I find it interesting that over half of the ultra-geniuses in the world are Jewish.

Because math and science is fun. Set a goal and work for it. You'll enjoy the process.

why? because you don't have to be buckethead to have fun playing the guitar. likewise you don't have to be a Von Neumann to enjoy math and science. Geniuses like this guy are who inspired me to do physics and stop being shit lol they are archetypes

$5 says there was nothing wrong with the kid and Hilbert was just too autistic. Imagine your father being some huge physicist or mathematician; automatic disappointment unless you literally win a fucking Nobel in math or physics.

In my thermodynamics class, I need to find a topic which I have to research, construct a lab around (using the scope of the lab capabilities provided to me as an undergrad), and present give a 30 minute presentation on.

Anyone have any ideas for something cool but realistic?

It doesn't have to be centered around thermodynamics. I could for example do the changing of the eath's magnetic polarity if I were able to test it in the lab.

Demonstrate the principles of thermal ablation. How no matter the heat rate, ablation of the material will cause the temperature of the solid ablator to plateau, with excess heat being carried away via gasification. Relate it into similar liquid-state phenomena such as the leidenfrost effect and the trick where you boil water in a paper cup without burning the cup.

is the physics route sort of a waste of time at this point? it seems like everyone wants engineers and nobody gives a fuck about physics grads, even in comparison to math since they can go into CS things, finance, statistics etc... i wanted to major in it or math but i don't want to make a big mistake. Is math considered safer than physics?

Applying to masters programs in physics soon but idk if its worth it breh

Employers don't want to spend money training employees. They prefer people that are already trained. I.e engineers. Because of this, colleges have essentially become vocational schools.

If you actually learn anything doing physics or math undergrad you can get those same engineering positions.

If you get a master's or doctorates then you have all that plus more possibility.
>>
>>8823402
But don't you have to be a certified engineer?

Or could a physics BS take a PE exam and boom technically be an engineer?
Because I know physicists can work as engineers, but why would a firm hire someone who "could" work as an engineer vs. an actual engineer lol

I don't know about you, but I'd muuuch rather non-mindless work even at the same wage.

This is assuming it's also not paired with significantly increased stress.

When famous scientists talk about 'god' they most likely mean that the universe is the result of an intelligent species having created the big bang. We too have the potential to become a species that has the ability to create new universes in order to escape our own, dying one.

This doesn't solve the question of where they themselves came from, however. Ultimately, they and we are made of the same stuff. But what is this stuff? Why should there be this stuff in the first place? Even in the longest possible chain of reasons, there must be an unmoved mover. This unmoved mover is true randomness. That is a thing that is totally incomprehensible to a being governed by rules. But randomness is the only thing that could possibly account for an infinitude of possibility, inevitably resulting in our small pocket of order, and many others like it.

They are probably somewhere in our universe right now. Why haven't they contacted us? Why should they? Why won't you contact some fern growing on the other side of the world? I'm sure this fern values its existence every bit ss much as you value yours.
